Hung Like A Tic-Tac: The man is a musical genius. Love it, love it, love it!

THIS.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Prince is one of those few musicians who gets talked about and listened to long after they are gone. The guy has talent oozing out of every pore and doesn't waste it doing stupid things like hard drugs or beating up a girlfriend, he just keeps making some of the best damn music on the planet - and this is the kind of stuff that he will always be remembered for.

Annnnd it's gone already. How is it someone like Prince who used to seem to understand marketing so well now seems to understand it not at all?

Except that he keeps suing just about any use of images, videos, and music of him on the Internet. I respect his music, but what a dumbass. He's committing commercial and cultural suicide.

Love Prince, eccentricities and all. I just wish he would allow online media already. I understand his point about his music, but I think not allowing photographs is too much.

Any guesses how much longer the video will last before Prince has it pulled? I'm guessing 11AM eastern.

As a metal head I can say with complete confidence that Prince Rogers Nelson is the most talented American musician ever.

There is no musician I can think of I admire more than Prince. And I can think of a lot of musicians. Without a doubt in my mind the hands down best all around singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist in the world.

One of the persistent images I have of Prince is watching MTV at some hour year ago when they still played music videos. And for some reason they were showing a Prince concert, but it looked liked an after-show. So it was pretty loose. At one point he brings Mavis Staples on stage and she and the band are going at it full tilt. And what is Prince doing? He's just sitting on one of the on stage amps just listening and totally into the music.

That's when it became clear to me that despite all his craziness and odd behavior; he's all about the music. I think that drive gets in the way. But when he puts it together the only person who comes close is Stevie Wonder in the 70's.

Here is Prince playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps (new window) at the Rock and Roll Hall Fame show. Your mind will start melting at about 3:30 in. Reports were that he had no rehersal time before hand.

Download it before it gets removed.

I'm glad to see so many Prince fans. He was a big part of my growing up (especially "Purple Rain"). I always liked the man and his music. Incredibly talented, and the man has some incredible taste in women.

Fark U: You people speak from platforms from which you have no authority. Get a clue already. That only makes YOU sound like the "dumbass" just because you can't copy his work without permission that is legally his to withhold.

Does any other business model suffer "commercial and cultural suicide" from protecting their images and work? Think about that. YOu're just being one of those "free downloads for everyone!" retards. ONly thinking about whats in it for you.

I don't think Prince is getting his property removed off the internet out of spiteful reasons, although to his fans it may seem incredibly petty to be worrying about photos or a song played in the background of a YouTube video.

He's very protective of his music and intellectual property. He always has been. What I think he is effectively doing is sitting this one out. Until there is a business model in place that interests him, I think he wants nothing to do with the internet. The "pay what you think it's worth model" that Radiohead put out there insulted a lot of musicians. Trent Reznor commented that what happens if a fan says it's only worth a penny? He felt that was a put down and not worth crossing over into that territory as it disrespected himself and his fans.

Of course, Trent's also put a ton of music on the internet for free, but he can afford to.

I think Prince values his work. I think he wants other people to value it too. However, until there's a better system (and no, I don't think "free for all" is it) I think he's going to opt out. Even if it pisses off his fans, even if they don't understand, even if they continue to trade his music all over torrent sites.

He's the only musician that I still buy pretty much everything he does just so I can still and - literally - laugh out loud at his creativity.

I wish he had an editor sometimes; Sign o the Times would've been an extraordinary single album.

But then, with an editor, we might not have things like Cloreen Bacon Skin or Bob George or Movie Star. So there's that.

Have you any idea what you're talking about? This is not an issue of legal or illegal downloads. Prince personally sued Youtube to have someone's home video removed because there was a faint track of "Let's Go Crazy" playing in the background. Protecting your songs from illegal downloads is okay, but suing Youtube to get your songs removed is dumb, and suing Youtube to get someone else's (popular) video removed is just farking stupid and public suicide.

Prince is absolutely the best entertainer out there. He surrounds himself with other great musicians and purely lives & loves music. I've been to probably 25 or so performances (including aftershows), but the small club or aftershow is really where he has fun. You never know what will happen or who will perform with him. His newest addition to his band is Frederic Yonnet, who is an awesome harmonica player.

VH1 & it's sister channels frequently run a program called The Prince of Paisley Park, which is a documentary type show. The best parts are the clips of him performing during soundchecks & aftershows.

Also, he's launching his new website, so he always tightens down the screws when he's coming out with something. It's a staged opening, so it's pretty bare right now. But they had a press preview and it should have lots of videos and recordings (as long as he doesn't change his mind...). He's also supposed to release three albums this year, one of them is his newest protege's (Bria Valente).

You're right, my bad. Prince was not directly involved in suing YouTube for that video, although it wouldn't came as a surprise if he was. Indeed, he sued his fan sites to get his own images removed. Great music, but completely clueless about the Internet. Examples 1 2 3

Wow, you're in quite the foul mood today, aren't you? Yes, I'm aware of the "Planet Earth" album and of instances where he gives away albums at his shows. However, "Planet Earth" was bundled with a newspaper and Prince's management arranged the deal. I never saw clarification on Fark, where I first read the story, if Prince was paid any sum of money for it.

However, seeing as how you're being an absolute douche towards everyone here, you can fark right off, squire.

You realize he could get paid for having his videos on YouTube? Plus it would lead to increased legal downloads of his stuff from places like iTunes.

Glitchwerks: Trent Reznor commented that what happens if a fan says it's only worth a penny?

Trent who happens to give away his music, down to giving away the raw tracks so anyone can mix his songs anyway they want.

He may give away a load of material for free, but he feels that his material does have value. The comments I'm attributing to Trent come from his observations on Radiohead's "In Rainbows" scheme, which he had some interesting things to say. He says he would feel insulted if someone said his album was worth only a penny.

He's also made a lot of comments about supporting an ISP tax for musicians.

Well, they misspoke in that 3rd article, he never actually sued any of those sites, only threatened. Regarding pictures, he usually gets all worked up if people use/post images from his site or others ones he considers 'copyright protected'. The sites like prince.org & HQ (now closed) do have photographs online which he has learned he can't do anything about.

The Pirate Bay and Youtube stuff was initiated while he was working with WebSheriff, which I haven't heard anything about for a long time, so I don't know if they're still in cahoots or not. I figured not, since a couple of months ago there were vids on Youtube that had been there for months and weren't cryptically named to avoid searches. Again, I think the renewed efforts are due to the new site coming online.

Also, Prince is one of the most bootlegged artists in the world and it pisses him off to no end. Seeing one of his 'official' pics used in some awesome boot cover art doesn't make for a happy purple guy.

Prince made a shiatload off the Planet Earth giveaway, in publicity and hard cash from the paper. It was also an attention getter to lead into his 21 night stand at the O2 arena.

I'm sure someone's already commented on this, but what the hell.

Obviously just because you think of anything you've heard from him (if anything) since 1992 doesn't mean he hasn't been putting out music. This pretty much applies to me that Pearl Jam hasn't put out a song I remember very much since "Ten." Obviously that doesn't mean they haven't...

NOTE: Although, according to a story told by Kevin Smith (pops)(and surely others) Prince has songs/albums/music videos etc. that have never seen the light of day. Be sure to check out parts 2 and 3.

I think he's commenting that he hasn't heard and new Prince material in general radio rotation since '92, not that Prince hasn't released any material since '92. We all that would be false.

The rumors of Prince's "vaults" are the same for many musicians. Sly Stone is another artist who supposedly has a ton of material he is just sitting on. Don't know why they don't release it, but both have said they are sick of the music industry.

And Prince is great.

Stay Cool Babylon 2009-02-28 11:47:27 PM
Several years had lapsed since I was an 'active' Prince fan. Meaning that I had the music, it just never made the rotation. Then I saw that shred-a-thon otherwise known as his recent Super Bowl appearance, and I was again hooked. There are few with his level of raw talent. Far fewer of those that are to his level of development. And definitely few if any with that combination PLUS his eclectic, genre-busting output.

But yeah, that Super Bowl show (among others, such as this) should remind any of the 'Prince is a fag' crowd that this man was shredding listeners alive before their particular brand of idiocy was even a gleam in their fathers' eyes.

Musicology (2004) was a top shiat in the US as well as several other countries and 3121 (2006) was a 1# hit in the US.

Maybe more iconic than you think...

I will never forget, it was probably 10 years ago. Prince was being interviewed, and he made a comment about how (back in the 80s) Michael Jackson was so family friendly, and that Price was frowned upon for being obscene and vulgar. Funny how that worked out.

Pentaxian: Here is Prince playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps (new window) at the Rock and Roll Hall Fame show. Your mind will start melting at about 3:30 in. Reports were that he had no rehersal time before hand.

Wow. Just wow. That link is awesome, thank you. I actually started crying a bit, there is something primal and moving about that performance.

Even though I just mainly like him for Purple Rain (which I love), I saw him in concert a few years ago and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been too, even though 80% of the music was unfamiliar. First of all, he is a showman extraordinaire.

However, the thing I will NEVER forget is his finale, Purple Rain. He took out his signature guitar and he performed that song with such love and such enthusiasm, you would have thought he had just written that song the night before. To think he has been performing that song for the past 25 years is incredible. No one has EVER performed a song the way he performed the song that night, and probably every night. It was simply the best performance of a song that I've ever seen in my life.

This is so true about how he can still get into Purple Rain after all these years. A few times I've thought, oh let's skip it this time and then been brought to tears by the emotion in his playing and singing.

One very cool experience I had was the tour in 2002 where club members got to go in for the soundchecks. In Phoenix, that meant maybe 100-200 people in the Dodge theatre sitting in the first couple of rows watching them rehearse. Being there, with Prince just chatting with the folks and listening to him play without 'performing' was incredible. At some of the other shows, he'd invite people up to play with the band.

Three years he hosted week-long 'celebrations' at Paisley Park, where every night there was a party and/or performance by his band or other people like Victor Wooten, Erykah Badu, Common, Alicia Keys, The Time, George Clinton, Nikka Costa and others. Who else does or has ever done something like that? He invites people into his home away from home for an entire week. And it wasn't all about the money, the 7-day ticket was around $150 if I remember right. The Park was also open for tours and just hanging out during the day, it was really surreal when you thought about where you were & what you were doing. Then he'd also do a regular concert at a big venue one night out of the week. Dude does NOT stop!
