"I don't know if crime will go up after these guys leave. But I know a lot more of us will be packing our own pieces now to make sure we're protected," said Calvin Stewart, owner of a restaurant and store.

The Mardi Gras Day shootings has me filling out my CCP paperwork right now.

Yep. If you stay in the vicinity of Bourbon Street, you're fine. We went a few blocks too fark, and you could literally practically rollerskate on the crack vials covering the sidewalk.

NO is more well-known for the War of 1812. Andrew Jackson stomped the British after the war was officially over. The British must have been hired by FEMA.

He didn't say he'd tell you where you purchased them....

I love New Orleans (well, really the entire gulf coast region). Considered going down to start a business after Katrina. Might still end up down there.

But inside the city itself really sucks. That said, I can think of some other places I've been that are just as bad, if not worse.

And the food isn't nearly as good.

But if I do move down there, I'll probably be on the other side of the lake. :-)

Six months and they will be pining away for the good old days under Bush.

When we could fight a war for 150 Billion a year and it was a good war, where we freed a bunch of people and really kicked ass.

Dont you remember the good old days before Obama tried to Spend a Trillion Dollars a month forcing Socialism down our throats?

I mean wow, it would have taken bush like 6 years to waste that much on the war....thats like 72 times as efficient as Obama. And just think if we spent that on a war we could decide to be punks and just keep what we fought for.

Obamas going to spend that much just trying to make welfare queens happy. Someone should tell him that the USA has already spent nearly 6 trillion dollars trying to make the Welfare queens happy.

I wonder what else we couldhave bought for the 3.7 Trillion dollars that the Porkulus bill will cost us by the time its paid off....(never?) My favorite example is that we could have built the worlds premier high tech manufacturing facility in hardened bunkers on the Gulf Coast of Texas.....it could have had everything, a huge modern port, Nuke plant, facilities to build solar, fission and fusion power plants....portable ones even, and a Dirigible plant to build massive dirigibles to transport them across the globe. We could have been the leading edge of high tech production for the next hundred years. Probably would have employed 50,000 people in high paying jobs, and another 2-3 million in the service sectors to provide basic needs.

But no, instead we will get free condoms and lectures on why our toilet paper is bad for the environment.

Another thing we could have done.....go look at google earth and check out the coast of Dubai.....see those man made Islands? We dont have the right conditions for those, but what we could do instead is start at the lowest point on the tip of Florida and start building an elevated coastal residential zone.....fifty foot high levee with housing and commercial on top.....protected roadway inside.....3 level basements under each home....a hurricane proof community.....and we could just keep building it right up the coast till the terrain got high enough not to matter. If a big one did hit....no problem getting aid tot he region, just drive the Semi's right into the interior roadway and straight to the eye of the storm.

That would also protect us from rising sea levels in the event of global warming...Double bonus, safe from hurricane flooding and warmer weather year round.

Thats Change you can Believe in.

Just say in the CBD area, don't go near residential areas unless you are touring with a group. The people you'll see around bourbon street are sketchy looking, but you should be fine as long as you don't bother them. You'll know you've wandered into the wrong part of town VERY quickly. It's like you stumbled into a slum the second you hit the street.

If you are driving, plan it ahead of time. New Orleans has rotating one-way streets, and a few streets merge and disappear on you. It's designed around the mississippi, so the outer streets and a few main veins follow the river's curves. Several times I have gotten caught off guard on new streets and suddenly found myself going 1 way, but the wrong way.

Katrina helped relocate alot of the parasites of humanity to Houston, Atlanta and other shiatholes. The good govenor doesn't want to encourage any to move back, probably. He probably only wants citizens who want to work and be productive members of society, instead of parasites that destroy neighborhoods and fester with crime.

This is America. You should be able to walk down any street you want without fear of rape, murder, or being robbed. Anyone can on my street. Too bad the police are too busy with petty crime, to make all streets like this.

That is New Orleans, where the law enables you to effectively scare off witnesses with the threat of death and walk away from a murder charge because said witnesses do not step forward regardless of ballistic results.

They made their bed, they can sleep in it until they change their stupid laws.

DeathByGeekSquad: They made their bed, they can sleep in it until they change their stupid laws elect a competent mayor.

All you have to do is compare the crime rates and police corruption under Mark Morial and his police chief Richard Pennington, against those under Nagin. Morial reformed the police department and cut crime while at the same time repairing race relations in the city's worst neighborhoods. Nagin came in and undid all of that in just a few months, leading to the mess the city was already in before Katrina hit.

Until people there quit having fantasies about a "chocolate city" and elect someone who wants New Orleans to be a safe place to live and do commerce, it will remain a shiathole.
