There was a law and order a while back where an old black guy was in the nut-house and they were trying to show that it was the fact that the place gave him sugar pills for meds that allowed his schizophrenia to take hold and cause him to kill someone. During the episode he says something like "my uncle something or other who lives in yonkers told me to do it". I was like, "yonkers, this guy really is messed up, wth". Then a little later I realized he really had an uncle in yonkers and he wasn't talking about a voice in his head.

My NY friends assure me that NYC and surrounding areas are very safe. For the most part, my experience has been that they are right. At the same time, their observations seem to be based on an assumption that certain people don't travel to certain areas at certain times. As natives, it doesn't occur to them that not everyone knows these hidden rules.

I don't take this single case as proving some general point about the whole of NYC -- my commentary is that it can be dangerous to certain people in certain areas at certain times, that these rules are recognized by natives of the city, and are not always disclosed to non-natives, especially immigrants.

I'm so tired of people claiming there is no connection between violent video games and this kind of reprehensible action, these games are nothing more than "murder simulators" that desensitize idiots of this caliber to a "press button A to kill" attitude regarding anything that displeases them.

I mean this is probably true, but also true of any large city.

New York has the lowest crime rates of any major city in the US. It is much safer to walk in any area than it is to do the same in Houston or Chicago or wahtever.

You know, I actually do think violent video games and tv/movies desensitize people to violence. I'm a lot less grossed out by corpses thanks to CSI. Lack of smell-o-vision means I'll puke like the rest of you when we stumble upon one though :)
