Sad, but tagline almost spilled my irish coffee.

But we surely don't need to toss our tax codes and system out the window and put a fair one in place that would largely eliminate crap like this.

Higher taxes for you but not me!

The sad part about this headline is that I thought the last clause was what actually happened (until reading the initial comment, of course).

FTFA:

Wilkinson said House and Senate leaders are now discussing what should happen to the 16 House members and 3 senators in wake of the disclosure.

Most likely, in a closed door session, they'll vote themselves a pay raise and enact a handful new 'user fees' to cover the cost.

Toss it out? We should burn it, then encase the ashes in several tons on concrete, then bury that under a nuclear waste dump site.

Do we need a tax code? Yes, but start from scratch and write a new one.

Not sure that would be either responsible, prudent or "fair"... nor would it be very conservative for that matter.

Alot of bipartisan and even apolitical wisdom is wound up in that tax code along with the plainly dishonest obscurantist stuff that we should get of.

There's no reason to be intellectually lazy about the tax code and throw the baby out with the bath water just because you don't feel like sifting through it to understand what's good and what's bad.

Here is a start federal tax rate = xx%

New tax form looks like this: How much did you make ________ multiply this line by this factor #### and send a cheack to the IRS for this amount. If you make under $xx then you owe nothing.

No sense in taxing the poor just to give it back to them after expenses are taken out.

Yeah, only the middle class should have to suffer. Only tax the working ones...

Not sure what you expect?
Mmm, what's a person gonna say when applying for one of the most powerful positions in the country under the president?

"Hey Obama. I didn't pay my taxes. Is that savvy? I mean, you're cool with that right?"

eraser8 2009-02-27 10:13:42 AM
Good joke at the end, submitter...but "state Georgia legislature"?

Well it's only bad when Republicans evade taxes. Forgetting to pay a few hundred thousand dollars in back taxes should not disqualify you from being on Obama's cabinet.

There is nothing illegal about having a foreign bank account. Not paying your taxes, though, is illegal. If Republicans are using Swiss bank accounts to hide the fact they're not paying their taxes, then that makes them just that much smarter than there Democratic adversaries.

If that's all you got, you stepped up to the plate and forgot your bat, guy.

By this logic, nothing hidden, deceptive, nor plainly contemptuous of the law, justice, fairness or responsibility is ever wrong. The only indices of what is right or wrong is whether you can get away with it.

Well, and the rich people, not sure why you're ignoring them... oh, right, 'cause you're a tool.

What percentage of Americans do you think have tax issues? I'd guess over 10%, if everyone was looked at closely.

Politicians are no different.

I'm not exactly defending Obama, but I'm sure if any other president's cabinet selections were looked at, the same thing would happen. We're just better at digging things up now.

Who didn't pay a few hundred thousand dollars in back taxes, in the Obama cabinet, or even when nominated?

The one woman owed 300 bucks. What, do you think throwing BS big numbers in makes your "Obamapologist" any less juvenile?

You are FAR closer to correct than any one wants to admit.

Um, if you don't pay your taxes for six years, it's called tax evasion and they'd be in jail.

Being audited by the IRS for taxes you miscalculated (like in Daschle's case) is not illegal or newsworthy at all. He got the notice, and then paid them!

If they're still cranking along... there's nothing illegal going on!

Nemo's Brother: I don't see why they should get in trouble when our Treasury Secretary didn't for the same thing.

Well, he got in trouble in that he had to pay the back taxes with interest. The reason he didn't get penalties was because they audited all of his coworkers and half of them made the same mistake on SECA taxes; the IRS gave all of them a blanket waiver because of their unusual tax situation.

And criminal charges are rare (less than 1% of all people who owe back taxes), and they require, just like any criminal charge, that the state can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you deliberately and knowingly refused to pay taxes.

Then again the Dems have been saying for 20 years that Social Security needs no fixes.
