The GOP butthurt. So thick and palpable it's like a big cushy pillow of WAAAAAAAAA.

I oppose the fairness doctrine because it will give right-wing ass-clowns an undeserved air of legitimacy.

Most people oppose it because when it was in force it was abused by both sides, and both sides suffered.

Mordant [TotalFark] 2009-02-26 06:34:19 PM
When the Republicans lose their next power base (in the media) much like they've lost everything else, we'll all be glad that they "won" this battle.

Well, some will be more overjoyed than merely glad.

Does anyone even give a shiat about AM radio anymore? In 10 years it'll be dead, completely replaced with podcasting and other forms of streaming.

Republicans will probably find a more appropriate medium for their message also. Like writing their ideas on a brick and pitching it through your window at night.

Dick Durbin does. Hence, the thread. :)

AM survived FM.

Good.

I still find it ironic that Fox News tries so hard for a "fair and balanced" report as if they were somehow compelled to by the fairness doctrine.

Now how can we spin this against the democrats who overwhelmingly supported banning any possible codified fairness doctrine.

Maybe the libruls want to get rid of the doctrine so they can actively misrepresent two sides of a debate with clear conscience.

It's unclear whether the amendment will survive as Congress debates the voting rights bill. But the measure served to effectively put the Senate on record as opposing a revival of the Fairness Doctrine.

However, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin also won approval for an alternate amendment that would order the Federal Communications Commission to encourage radio ownership "diversity."

Good ol' Fox News. Nothing like throwing down a good old-fashioned "does not follow" in order to terrify their viewership. Ownership diversity is in no way related to the Fairness Doctrine. But because a Democratic Senator proposed it, and it has the word "radio" in it, they have to present it as a counterpoint.

sloppy shoes 2009-02-26 08:38:47 PM
Break up the radio station conglomerates. Break up the cable conglomerates. That's a start.

I would generally support the Fairness Doctrine, also.

They should bring back the media ownership and ad sales department/news room separation parts.

DamnYankees: Does anyone even give a shiat about AM radio anymore?

Yeah. Anyone who lives further from the next big town than an FM station can broadcast. There's big chunks of real estate out there where you don't really have a lot of use for an FM radio in a car.

And small-town FM stations play "soft hits" and muzak and ads for the local funeral home, so even when you get near a pretty big town, you are still not getting the FM experience you get in, say, *checks profile* New York, where there's a station every two tenths of a MHz.

One DOES have to admire the way they tell BOTH sides of an issue. The right and the FAR right. Rupert and Co. would not want to be forced to chance the name of their empire to Fox Editorial Channel, would they?

Bah, the thing by Durbin won't amount to shiat. I understand being concerned about it, as in a "slippery slope" argument, but the Democrats in the Senate, by and large, showed they don't give a damn about the Fairness Doctrine. By my count, more Democrats voted against it than Republicans. Odd, huh?

Maybe Fox News will start a clandestine analog broadcast network to reach all the idiots that didn't get a converter box.

Sens. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) are on record as supporting the return of the Fairness Doctrine, with Stabenow saying she thinks hearings on the topic of "accountability" are likely. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has also said she'd like to see the doctrine back in place. No legislation to bring it back has been introduced, however.

How meaningful is it in the age of internet news? *shrug*

I think Republicans are thinking about re-instating slavery.

Why would anyone want to do this? Because this way they could disenfranchise a large, reliable Democratic voting block.

I know they aren't actually saying this, or anything...I mean, that would be crazy. But the policy used to exist, and if it were to come back today it would favor them politically.

So I think we can see that the GOP is solidly in favor of reinstating slavery.

For those of you too young to remember, Rush Limbaugh spent about fifteen minutes of every single show in 1993 and 1994 whining like hell that the Democrats were going to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine any day now and silence his pilonidal trap.

Didn't happen. Not going to happen. Supporters of that are in the minority of the Democratic party, let along the entire legislature.

Republicans are against it for the sole fact they're in power.

They can not seriously tell me if it was 92% to 8% democrat (which is how it is currently in the other direction) that they wouldn't be whining.

They already biatch and complain about the 'liberal media' even though everyone but Maddow and Olbermann on tv are conservative, News Corp has a near monopoly on news, and the radio is 90-10 republican over democrat. Imagine if there actually WAS a liberal media. The republicans would shiat themselves to death.

It's about giving the other side a voice. They don't like that. And frankly, it's childish and stupid.
