Styx can call themselves anything they like, but without Dennis De Young, they ain't Styx.

Isn't this better known as the Ribfest or some other food oriented festival that features a bunch of dried up pop acts?

I really wish they would stop rockin'.

I was going to make a snarky remark about coming soon to a county fairground near you...but looking at the list, it's a little to close to the truth.

Not that I'm a fanboy of any these acts, but all are professionals who've been doing this longer than many of you have been alive. The shows will not suck. They just won't be to your taste. So don't go. Simple, eh?

You know, I'm partial to the non-Dennis De Young Styx, but I kind of got on his side when others in the band started mocking him for his contributions (Shaw still makes fun of "Babe").

As cheesy as early '80s Styx could be, they didn't mind riding the gravy train.

Boris S. Wort: There's not enough acid in the world to convince me that going to this show would be a good idea.

The idea of being on any amount of acid at that gig ranks right down there with dosing an 8-months-pregnant woman and sending her to see "Eraserhead."

I saw this same line-up about five years ago, but w/Billy Squier in place of .38 Special. The tickets were free and I had low expectations, but it turned out to be a hell of a show, esp. Styx.

I also happened to see Dennis DeYoung at one of the aforementioned "festivals that features a bunch of dried up pop acts" a short while later, and it was embarrassingly cheesetastic. Styx w/o DeYoung > DeYoung w/o Styx by light years.

ah yes. REO Speedwagon.
i have two of their records.
"you can tune a piano, but you can't tune a fish"
which actually has a few really good songs on it.

and "hi infidelity" which is early 80's adult contemporary pop aboslute garbage. arrrrrgh.

Hey, Canadian Farkers; the lead singer for Styx is now Gowan. Yes, that Gowan. They perform "Criminal Mind" in concert as a Styx song now.

Really, When did you see them?

I've seen REO and .38 Special, I've also seen Maiden, Priest, Pantera, Primus, Disturbed, Rush, a few other big names, and enough local shredders to deafen someone like you.

Different != suck

If you think so, you show your ignorance.

Wow, lots of bad bands floating around the music tab today. So far I've seen Poison, Motley Crue, Journey, Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, Poison, Styx, REO Speedwagon, .38 Special and Axl Rose. And on top of that Smashing Pumpkins (who were good but now aren't). Could it get any worse?

Is Johnny Van Zant fronting .38 Special?

I'll go. I haven't seen REO and I would like to.

Jean shorts never went out of style....in Phoenix....where it's hot.

Saw REO speedwagon in the late 90s (my whore-ish band went through a long 'we will open for anybody if there will be enough people there' phase). They were actually pretty damn good.

Dennis DeYoung was a founding member of Styx along with the Panazzo brothers, Tommy Shaw came in 1975 after several albums (including the incredible Styx II (Lady) and Equinox.), replacing John Curulewski. Yes, Shaw was/is a great addition to the band, and contributed much magic, but DeYoung is without a doubt the original front man.

Suite Madame Blue, Lady, Come Sail Away, and of course Mr Roboto were all penned by DeYoung. He also was a co-writer in many of their best works.

Credit where credit is due. Yes, he was more.....lovey dovey than the rockin' types Shaw or Young, but to discount his fundamental contribution is asinine and ignorant of the history of Styx.

Can you tell I was into Styx when I was younger?

WHAT? AGAIN? You'll have to SPEAK UP -- I used to operate an INDUSTRIAL SHREDDER back before they gave you EARPLUGS...

Now get off your little high horse, junior (given these bands you note, how do you even have a high horse?). If all those bands amount to what constitutes "different" in your book, I don't imagine anybody's going to have much of a problem figuring out who's ignorant here.

And may I also note that what you most likely know about "someone like [me]" wouldn't fill the crack pipe you sound like you've been hitting.

Skorkles 2009-02-27 04:33:04 PM
We went to Jacks Big Show last summer and REO was one of the acts and honestly one of the acts I wanted to see the least.
Let me say it right now. They blew the doors off that place and were the best act of the show.
My wife who is not much of a classic rock fan at all was blown away.
Those guys are not all slow music and ballads. They can rock the farking house.
Ill see them again anytime.
