uhmmmm no... I hate them now because Billy Corgan went all freaky weird and people quit the band.. I could of hung in there but Billy also lost the hot factor to his Uncle Fester look and could never redeem himself in my eyes..

that and their music isn't as good anymore

zeitgeist is kind of crap, but 3 or 4 of the songs he's written in the last year are great. Owata, Gossamer, 99 Floors and Song For a Son remind me of the old days and I'm going to stick with them.

Just saw them play the Aragon in Chicago for a special smaller show and it was a great night.

Don't worry, all the haters will move on to Iha's new band soon enough. At least that Hanson boy will beat Corgan on looks.

/Zwan was awful

I've always thought the Smashing Pumpkins sucked donkey balls, and this basically proves that not only is their music lousy, but basically that Corgan guy is a douche.

SURPRISE!!

pretty much this. Though how on Earth anyone can follow a band whose lead singer clearly hates his fans is beyond me.

I would like SP more if they were much less prolific. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: For ever Cherub Rock Corgan writes, he'll write at least 3 Disarms.

I definitely enjoy some of their new tunes:

99 Floors, Superchrist, Peace + Love, The Rose March and more. The quality of sound is actually much improved. I like the way they are trying to take alternate routes.

Ok, lemme get this straight.... your "fans"... need something to hate.

Your fans hate you?

Jesus, that's bad, man.

So how do people who are NOT your fans feel about you? Calling for your slow death by drill press?

I don't think the "supergroup" thing works well though.

I don't hate the pumpkins I just thought Corgan was a knob, apart from that I was a massive fan. After Gish I lost complete interest though.

I love the Smashing Pumpkins, love.

But SP ended on December 2, 2000 at the Metro, Chicago. This new band is a bastardization not worthy of the name, to satisfy Billy Corgan's colossally overinflated ego.

I think this thread proves Billy Corgan has a better sense of humour than most Farkers.

I used to be an obsessive fan (hence my Fark handle). Like many others I lost all interest after they broke up. A high quality release of Machina 2 would be nice though.

This. Pumpkins fans 'hate' billy because he's basically a dictator who changes his image and sound completely every 3-4 years. Good news is the cycle of sucky experimentation that started with Adore has come full circle and the post-zeitgiest stuff is really really good. Like they mashed up Gish through Melon Collie and came out with progressive rock with an edge, mostly ignoring all the euro-techno-emo-high concept static in the middle. That stuff is interesting to listen to once, but doesn't really stand on its own.

Nah that's only the case if you're just listening to albums. There's tons of bootlegs and demos floating around out there from the periods between albums that paint a totally different picture; the transitions are a whole lot more fluid.

Except for the MCIS-Adore divide, but I have a feeling that stems from the Jimmy/Jonathan Melvoin incident more than anything else.

Billy's songs are still top notch. They are better than anything anyone else is writing currently in rock. I really believe that.

BUT

He's ego and his meglomania has driven him to produce his own records, and they sound like garbage, like a demo for a band who saved up enough money to record in a crappy studio and then they took it home and mixed themselves on laptop speakers...

I miss the Allen Mulder, Butch Vig, and Flood production.

You know, I actually thought Zeitgeist was ok. Not one of his top albums, but still enjoyable to listen to.

Part of the problem that most people have with Billy Corgan is that he IS a bit of a little penis. But he's a very TALENTED little dickwad. Yeah, he's a dickwad for his petty trash talking of former Smashing Pumpkins members, but that doesn't mean that all his work automatically sucks. I also think Hipster Rage also plays a big part here. The "OMG, Smashing Pumpkins sucks on every album that got national air time, they were only good when no one had even heard of them."

I used to love SP. I even liked a lot of their stuff after MCIS. One of the best concerts I ever went to was a SP show about week before the overdoses. I used to happily drive hours to see them all the time. Now, however, I went and saw them last August about 15 minutes away from my house and was wishing I would have just stayed home instead of taking the time to drive down there.

Galvatron Zero 2009-02-27 09:34:32 AM
Most SP fans have just been able to overlook the fact that Corgan is an epic douche bag.

However, of late it's hard to overlook that fact when their new music sucks and Corgan has managed to raise the bar on douchebaggery.

I would have enjoyed Zeitgeist a lot more if his vocals hadn't been so damn high in the mix. Putting the weakest part of the sound (which has always been Billy's vocals) front and center is never a good idea.

I don't know if that really works, since they were getting MTV airplay for "Siva" off of Gish. It could be argued they didn't "hit" until Siamese Dream, but people knew who they were.

/Gish & Siamese Dream FTW

so, for all of you detractors: you hate billy/the pumpkins, we get it. you don't have to like him or his music, but i do not think that you can objectively say that he's not a very talented musician. and who in the heck do you like to listen to? i'd truly be interested to see who/what you think is uber-great in music.

i'll actually agree with you on the solo album. after all this time, i've still not been able to listen to the entire thing.

He's actually a really nice normal guy, or at least he was in the 90's. I always thought all the goth stuff was just a pose. He's a jock who knows every Eddie Van Halen riff.

Maybe the massive success and subsequent rejection made him go a little nuts.

theurge14 2009-02-28 12:51:36 AM
It's been almost 15 years and all we wanted out of Billy Corgan is a rock and roll album like Gish and Siamese Dream.

But somewhere along the way he picked up a keyboard, an obsession with Cheap Trick and the ability to disguise himself as a walking, talking bag of douche.

This is the kind of shiat that they get pissed off about, and I think rightfully so. If you're not interested in their new stuff, don't listen to it, but don't get mad at an artist of any kind for trying something different.

I don't think new pumpkins is as good as old pumpkins, but there's still a lot to like there. Zeitgeist (the song), Gossamer, That's the Way My Love Is (the live acoustic version especially) and many others. I hope Billy Corgan never stops writing music.

/Zwan had a few decent songs
//There's nothing salvageable on the solo album
///Not going to argue Corgan isn't a douche.
