(Chicago Sun-Times) Interesting Chicago politics makes what goes on in DC look like a quiet political science seminar: Sen. Roland Burris's son is a tax deadbeat who got a $75,000 job from ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich a few months ago   (suntimes.com) divider line 62

Color me surprised...Statist Democrat has statist son. Face it, political dynasties aren't dead in this country, it's just a matter of 'who you know' that gets you the power and the money. It's no meritocracy, folks, it's a combination of aristocracy and plutocracy.

Burris really should resign. Why he took the job under these circumstances is beyond me as even without all this new damaging information coming to light Burris was never going to be free of the association with Blago.

So..who's running against him in the 2010 primary? 'Cause if he wins the primary....Well Illinois , you're going on the list.

Let him stay in the senate- impeaching him would be a large, embarrassing hassle, and would probably take almost as long.

Spade 2009-02-26 01:50:52 PM
I know it is apparently illegal for a state to leave the union (Civil War and all), but can we kick one out? Maybe with a nice letter that says, "please feel free to reapply when you aren't run like some kind of banana republic".

Car_Ramrod 2009-02-26 01:52:36 PM
Burris II had resolved two federal tax liens in 2005 before being hit with the $34,163 lien in July. That lien against his property seeks unpaid taxes for 2004, 2005 and 2007.

A month after the IRS filed the lien, Burris II's lender filed its foreclosure suit. Since Burris II and his wife got the $372,000 mortgage on July 18, 2006, they've paid less than $3,000 on it, the suit alleges. The balance due is $406,685, including interest and penalties.

The fact that Burris II faces foreclosure but is working at a housing-related state agency "reeks of hypocrisy," said state Rep. Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs), who was the first to call on Sen. Burris to testify before the impeachment panel.

"It's probably not the area where he [Burris II] should be counseling Illinois citizens on how to stave off foreclosure," Durkin said.

The thing that pisses me off is that Obama brought so much pride to Illinois, and specifically Chicago. Now these assholes are doing their best to erase all those good feelings as quickly as possible.

It's like if the Cubs ever win the World Series again, and the douchiest of their fans burn down Wrigley in "celebration".

Burris took the job because:

- He has no political future in Illinois.
- Nobody else wanted the job because they still have a political future.
- He has an ego as wide as the Grand Canyon and wanted to add another line to his "granite resume".

In 2002 I beleive, Burris ran or gov as the interference Candidate. Paul Vallas, a white guy who did wonders with the Chicago school system adn was promplty ousted by Daley was running for Gov. Blago, a northside COngressman and Rahm's predecessor was also running. Problem was that Vallas was hugely popular amongst Blacks and Whites (city and suburbs). he was not the machine candidate. Blago had a much better operation downstate and backing of the same machine politicians who speak ill of him now and supported him in 06, knowing he was scum. Burris ran, effectively taking away Vallas's Cook County advantage, especially amongst Blacks.

That is what he owed him, his governorship! Valllas went to head Philly Schools, the NOLA and now is talking about coming back (as a Republican) and running as president of the Cook County board (a whole nother mess!) Vallas is the first campaign I volunteered for.

Why, oh why, did Harry Reid think it was a good idea to let this guy in? If Reid had held the line against Burris and Blago, this would all be coming out right in the middle of Burris trying to sue his way into the Senate. Then he would have to just limp away in shame.

But now, it's a national issue. I'm a total liberal, but I'd like to see an investigation into why the Dems shuffled this guy into a protected position as fast as they could when any fool could see he was crooked. He'll be a giant albatross for the rest of Obama's term. *facepalm*

Didn't they determine that Reid didn't have a choice. He tried the old "attorney general didn't sign off" trick, but that didn't fly.
