And in all seriousness Obama may have finally found the answer to Seneca's conundrum...and the Answer is us. If Rocovery.gov does everything that's promised, Every federal dollar spent will come under the withering eye of obesessive-compulsive bloggers with ideological axes to grind and waaaayyyy too much free time on thier hands. And this is, for our democracy, an annoying but ultimately very good thing.

Fox News was talking about this guy a couple days ago. They were openly mocking the choice as a bad pick because "The money will be gone the first day of his job. A secret service agent? What does he know?" without ever mentioning his actual credentials.

Now I watch fox news about the same as CNN and MSNBC and normally laugh at the bad reporting and commentating, but Fox's coverage of this story got me angry enough to start typing up an email to complain. Then I snapped back to reality and had myself a beer.

"Given the breathtaking arrogance with which you have conducted previous so-called investigations of me, I have no interest in any further discussion with your office,"
- Julie MacDonald,

That's an actual investigation, patches.

Devaney's report found MacDonald improperly leaked information and interfered with at least 13 decisions about the protection of endangered species

Somebody really oughta mention to Fox that the US Secret Service is a branch, believe it or not, of the Treasury department, and as such, is home to the very best counterfeit and financial fraud investigators in the whole USG. Elliot Ness was a T-man not, as Hoover later tried to make it seem, a G-man; and that's why he thought of, and was eventually able to, nail Capone on tax evasion

Devaney will work with Vice President Joe Biden to monitor for wasteful spending and issue periodic reports to the public

I thought everyone was going to do that via the website. The oh so transparent website. The website that Biden doesn't have the number for.

Secret Service's original job (and still is to this day) was investigating money. FOX is the a synonym for stupidity.

This is the right guy for the job.

They WERE a branch of Treasury. The Department of "Homeland Security" stole them during Bush's admin.

I don't care if he's got a couple thousand in a unreported income or a shady deduction. He's got a history of being competent and telling truth to power. He looks like the very antitheses of a political hack or wall street crony.

The most galling thing about the Bush administration to me is not their policies (which I didn't agree with mostly). It was the appauling execution. The last 8 years have been filled with a willful incompetence of federal appointees.

Good call. MSNBC, Fox, and CNN (not CNN International), are better termed "news entertainment" rather than "news". Much like how professional wrestling is "sports entertainment".

I'm beginning to think MSNBC and Fox are satire at some level. Chris Matthews is secretly a neocon parodying a leftist moonbat, and Sean Hannity is actually a liberal parodying a jackbooted right winger. They're real life Politics tab trolls.

Infotainment.

I watch Olbermann/Matthews/Maddow sometimes. I don't think it's news, I think it's commentary.

Matthews specializes in getting random party hacks to yell at each other in front of camera.

Olbermann specializes in righteous outrage.

Maddow-the best thing on the network- specializes in thoughtful analysis and rational arguments, but she's still only editorializing.

If I want the news I go online.

Fox is just as lazy as anybody else when it comes to doing their homework - but in cable news it's all about keeping eyeballs in front of the set, so their task is to turn every issue into a flame war.

Still, there's a grain of truth in what they brought up, that Devaney's screwed if he doesn't get the manpower he needs to do his job and fast. When that much money is on the table, Congress will not be above setting Devaney up to fail.

Help me out, Latin IV was a long time ago. "Who watches the watchers' (themselves?) dogs?" If that's intended, wouldn't it be "canes custodium"? (accusative, genative)

My old roommate's dad was retired Secret Service, had protected Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. I have never met a more honestly devout straight-shooter. There must be some major psychological profiling that goes into their hiring process.

No, the correct translation is "Who is going to see the Watchmen movie on IMAX?"

No matter what side you are on about the bailout/stimulus, this guy seems like the perfect weapon to fight corruption and sleaze. Of course, the kneejerk freepers will hate him because he's not Cheney, a closeted homo, a drag queen or a blowhard pedophile. They seem to like those guys a lot more.

Even having a Watchdog for large sums of money makes Obama a better administrator than the last President.

Valid; that's why you're one of the better informed and insightful regulars on Politics. I suspect most of their viewers don't make that distinction between commentary and news though.

But don't tell me you'd be surprised if you found out that Matthews was a staunch right-winger who's trying to make liberals look bad, a la RAR. And Hannity, like skookum, will reveal his true agenda right before he retires.

Judging by his background, overall I can say this guy seems pretty good, at least on paper. People with a high zeal for justice, I wonder about them. Remember Elliot? He was really good with what he did, but he sure wasn't perfect, but his preference and taste was magnificent.

FTFA : " he found MMS employees were drinking and using drugs on the job and were having sexual relationships with oil industry contracts." (details of an investigation he led).

Wouldn't that make the contracts all, you know, sticky and hard to read.

/Yes, I know what the case was really about - the oil industry ending meetings with that office by shouting "and now, the whores!"
