This. Anyone with any taste in music knows that Muse is the best British band.

/At least they won best live band.
//Still needs to see them live.

I'm sorry, but MGMT makes me irrationally angry. "Time to Pretend" makes me want to do myself in.

I've seen Muse a couple times. Inland Invasion (Los Angeles) 2005 or 2006, and in Northern California opening for The Srokes when their third album came out. Muse is good for a three-piece. Not a big fan of Kings of Leon or MGMT, though.

All 3 are bands that someone thinks I'm supposed to like, and some people whose opinions I respect really, really do.

But man, I just don't. My loss, I guess.

They don't look too British to me... (link goes pop with the quickness)

/That is, quite possibly, the most grammatically incorrect thing I've ever typed.
//Think I've used it before, too.

Saw Muse live in Detroit a few years ago. I like Muse, but it was probably one of the worst shows I've ever been to. And it's not even like there were technical problems, or even a generally shiatty performance... it was just boring. They played their set. They did nothing to differentiate themselves from their recorded output. No talk (literally, "hello Detroit" was the only thing that was said through the entire performance), no covers, no stage antics. Just... bland.

Compare that to Interpol, who I saw in Kitchener, Ontario a couple years back. All kinds of equipment malfunctions, shiatty attitudes, no encore... but at least there was something to talk about afterwards.

KoL jumped the shark with their 4th album.

It was recorded for one purpose: to pack arenas in the U.S.

MGMT is just the Bee Gee's reinvented, that's all I can think about when I hear "Electric Feel".

Muse is awesome

Kings of Leon.....good singer but I have no idea what the hell their songs are about.

I think what you may be referring to is what I call a band being "too good." The musiciansip is great, but because they make it look easy and it does sound just like the album, it comes off as dispassionate. Another band that is like that for me is Incubus.

Crewmannumber6 2009-02-26 12:33:40 PM
My sister in Ireland raves about KOL, so I checked them out and the best I could do was "Meh". Really liked Super Massive Black Hole inspite of the Al Gore ellating lyrics. Never heard of those other guys.

/goes back to listening to Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt

Aha Shake Heartbreak is a great place to start.

Well, they have Radiohead, who are the greatest musicians on planet earth. Hands down.

litespeed74 2009-02-26 12:42:23 PM
Wow, I was listening to all 3 on the way to work this morning.
congrats to KOL

FeedTheCollapse 2009-02-26 12:43:21 PM
eh, Muse is probably the best of the 3 bands listed, and I haven't really heard enough to really be that impressed. King of Leon are okay and MGMT is pretty boring. My guess is MGMT would be nothing without David Fridmann producing their album.

Boyd Schidt 2009-02-26 01:06:38 PM
I thought only Oasis, Take That and Robbie Williams won UK music awards.

Land Ark [TotalFark] 2009-02-26 01:24:04 PM
I've been listening to Muse since 1999 (which obviously makes me better than everyone) but I think giving them an aware for a live album is stretching it a little.

I got a message from someone in the UK on Napster recommending them. I have since seen them 3 times and bought all their albums. But, P2P only costs record companies money.

This thread makes me feel that I have to check out these Muse people. I saw Kings of Leon open for U2 back in '05 at the United Center, and enjoy them quite a bit.
Guess I'll have to download buy a few tracks online.
Recommendations, then?

You can be really talented and sound great live without cranking out a concert that sounds like you put your CD on.

I am a fan of Counting Crows and the band sounds amazing live, but their concerts are all different and differ vastly from the CDs at times. The songs and lyrics are constantly reworked.

I have nothing against Muse, but just referring to your comment.

I actually enjoy all three bands, Kings of Leon would have to be my favorite of the 3 however, saw them live at Lollapalooza a few years back and Eddie Vedder came out and jammed with them on a few songs it was great.

Agreed. The reason "too good" was in quotes is I didn't mean that the band was literally too good to put on an inspired show. It's just a term I use to describe a certain phenomenon that happens sometimes. System of a Down is another band that has that effect on me.

The best* of Muse:

Map of the Problematique
Bliss
Hysteria
Endlessly
Muscle Museum
Sunburn
Knights Of Cydonia
Stockholm Syndrome
Assassin
And some people like Starlight and Time Is Running Out

* actual best may differ

Freeside [TotalFark] 2009-02-26 02:33:44 PM
If you like Muse, listen closely for whenever Matthew Bellamy takes a breath between lyrics. You may never hear any of their songs the same again.

/used to love Muse, but Bellamy could learn from Tay Zonday's mic maneuver
//possible he's improved since Absolution, haven't heard an album since

Dusk-You-n-Me [TotalFark] 2009-02-26 02:39:52 PM
I'm tempted to pay to see Kings of Leon just so I can see The Walkmen open for them.

Great list, I'd just add New Born and Escape. TIRO is definitely one of my favourites, first Muse song I ever heard I think, either that or Hysteria.

I've seen Muse three times, and it was never like the album - it was raucous, heavy and unhinged, loads of extra twists and improvisation. You must have caught them on a bad night, if they sounded just like the albums...

The fact that British people take KoL or MGMT seriously is proof that their sense of humor is in fact stunted.

I'll be the idiot coming in about five seconds too late.

Incidentally, I was at the concert the first night they played Chicago, where they trotted the little girl on the stage, not the boy. Did get to hear Bono cough a few times, though.

No one should have to apologize for hating MGMT. Stupid name, dumb casio-keyboard music. Same pop trash they've been trying to cram down our throats since, well... Kings of Leon, Muse, and beyond. I know garage bands with more creative songs.

P.S. Muse live show = over saturated guitar + a sobbing Brit on vocals. Wow, epic.
