Btw, anyone notice that Hannity has a hair cut just like a bear's butt.

Yes, there are over 9000 ear marks.
I had some guy stop me on the street today and tell me to google mouse and $300 million because they want to spend that much on saving and endangered Florida mouse. Seems that Fauxnews and the GOP can't get the story right on that one.

I do like Jindals comment on "something called volcano monitoring" (new window)

Meh, let's get rid of the hurricane monitoring too while we are at it.

I think it's funny how the democratic legislators crafting the bill thought they'd make it difficult to criticize from this angle by preventing the funding from going to any smaller projects that might sound ridiculous on TV. Of course, as they should have realized, the republicans can just as easily make up imaginary earmarks to get outraged over, and they seem to have no qualms about doing so.

Okay, let's try it your way:

Recovery.gov site claims $81 billion devoted to "Protecting the Vulnerable." A pretty peach bubble.

www.recovery.gov

Sounds EXCELLENT!

Let's go look in the bill - - should be simple enough to find "vulnerable" right?

Search... "vulnerable" ENTER.

Um...

Ah, here it is - -

Oh wait, that's only $650 million.

For... DIGITAL TV CONVERTER BOX EDUCATION?

Follow along! It's on page 14:

For an amount for ''Digital-to-Analog Converter Box Program'',
$650,000,000, for additional coupons and related activities under
the program implemented under section 3005 of the Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005: Provided, That of the amounts provided under this heading, $90,000,000 may be for education and outreach, including grants to organizations for programs to educate vulnerable populations, including senior citizens, minority communities, people with disabilities, low-income individuals, and people living in rural areas, about the transition and to provide one-on-one assistance to vulnerable populations, including help with converter box installation: Provided further, That the amounts provided in the previous proviso may be transferred to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) if deemed necessary and appropriate by the Secretary of Commerce in consultation with the FCC, and only if the Committees on Appropriations of the House and the Senate are notified not less than 5 days in advance of transfer of such funds.

We're going to spend more than half-a-billion dollars to provide people to personally show up at peoples' houses to plug boxes into TV sets? And this is going to provide a long-term employment scheme that will take us out of the recession?

Good. Good. Simply wonderous.

Here's another "vulnerable" population being helped in the bill. This round, we're going to throw money at:

(B) organizations and agencies that provide outreach,
access, equipment, and support services to facilitate greater
use of broadband service by low-income, unemployed, aged,
and otherwise vulnerable populations;

Go ahead - look it up - page 398.

So this would be... money for.... telecoms? Comcast? Do cable providers *suffer* during an economic downturn? We're going to turn high-speed internet into a civil right?

I'm not seeing the entire $81 billion bubble but it's *got* to be in there somewhere. Could $81 billion cover the high speed internet 'needs' of the low-income, vulnerable populations?

JoJoTheIdiotMonkeyBoy [TotalFark] 2009-02-25 11:55:36 PM
DarthBrooks: So this would be... money for.... telecoms? Comcast?

If there's one thing we can agree about Comcast, it's that they don't give a shiat about what ANYONE wants, especially not...

and otherwise vulnerable populations

You really have no idea what you are talking about, do you? The federal government is transitioning broadcast television to digital so they can use the airwaves for something more useful. In order not to screw the people who rely on network TV for news, they are providing transitional assistance to low income people.

And, yeah, high speed internet for everyone is a good idea. Rapid dissemination of information creates wealth.

I'm sorry, you want specifics? The bill's right there for you. You can whine about the abstract, or you can complain about the bill, but complaining about the abstract not having all of the details of the bill when the bill itself is readily available is just whiny.

And helping uneducated (technology-wise) populations understand and get through the long-overdue digital transition, and working to expand availability of broadband net access these days seems pretty darn useful. You know, keeping the poorest places out of the dark, stopping them from lagging even further behind the tech-savvy and hooked-up regions of the country?

In order not to screw the people who rely on network TV for news, they are providing transitional assistance to low income people.

The EPA estimates that there are almost 100 million TVs that are no longer in use. They're in STORAGE. Nobody is watching those TVs

TVs less than 11 years old are BUILT for digital reception. There is no need for a converter box.

The Nielsen Company estimates that 6.8% of the nation's 114 households with television need the digital conversion. That's 7.7 million homes - and that's NOT based on ability to pay. Giving *everybody* a slice of that $650 million pie is --- $85 a TV? The boxes are $40. So it's going to be a $45 overhead and a $40 coupon to give digital converters to people who can probably afford the boxes because the government is responsible for the civil right of having Katie Couric on in living rooms?

And, yeah, high speed internet for everyone is a good idea. Rapid dissemination of information creates wealth.

Wait - "rapid dissemination of information" - I thought that's what the free TV boxes were for.

What would you call "pulled TV out only to watch Bush's State of the Union address while playing drinking games?"

/donated that TV to the co-op I lived in
//by which I mean someone probably broke out the rabbit ears to drink to Bobby Jindal's speech
///Streaming-online-video just doesn't work as well with drinking games. Too much temptation to pause. It's gotta be in real time and for some odd reason, black and white on two channels and color without sound on the other.

Yes, those folks in the hinterlands who lag behind the city people in technology. History doesn't quite match up with the story, though.

I'm trying to understand the logic here: people in distant areas have a desire to (a) live away from populated areas and (b) somehow are being deprived of a "right" to high-speed internet. What about sewers and a city water utility? Aren't *those* the same kinds of "rights" all Americans should have? Shouldn't every house be connected to a central sewage system instead of a septic tank? Please explain what the difference between the two utilities (sewage and high-speed internet) are, and why a lesser method (septic systems and dial-up) isn't enough?

*sirens* Analogy Police, pull that sucker over.

Complete mismatch on the two services compared. A central sewage system and a septic system are both effective means of eliminating waste from a building. Have either? Flush the toilet and the stuff goes down the hole. With modern bandwidth requirements for effective internet usage, dial-up is an inadequate means of readily accessing information. You may as well say that telephones are unnecessary, as horse couriers are still available.

Hannity is a douche and his new show without Colmes is sad. However you people who rip on Jindal for lambasting the Volcano monitoring are idiots as well.

Sure we need that stuff, however we don't need it as part of the Economy Stimulus Package. The Stimulus package should be JUST THAT - not some grab bag of spending projects that any old Senator and Congress Critter can come up with; and that's where the outrage is coming from.

Bam Bam has been using Doom and Gloom to scare everyone into agreeing to this boondoggle of a Deficit increase, only to find out that quite a bit of that chunk o chage isn't going to stimulate Squat except for Lobbyists.

Not to bust into the Church O Bam Bam and start spitting in the holy water or nuttin, but seriously, open your eyes people.

If anyone wants to know why the Feds are kicking out money for digital converter boxes, think about that lovely message you hear once a month "This is a test...". Given many people just have TV's to watch or use them as their primary way of receiving info, if they lose the ability to receive a signal, makes it hard to tell them there's a tornado or something coming.

The stimulus package is extra funding, the USGS can certainly use some extra funding. Given their funding has been cut recently and they haven't even had a set budget yet for this year. Or what, you don't think they should get money to spend, on equipment and employees?
