what's stupid about it? you know if that chick is able to get tested, she's gonna start having sex!

Well, "sins of the father" and all that. You follow the Good Book, and of course this is the result. Punishing babies for their parents infidelity, by striking them with deadly disease is par for the course.

Yay Jesus.

A pregnant woman is required to have an HIV test in Colorado? Do they have undercover cops looking for pregnant women? You! You look pregnant! Papers please! Oh. Sorry. You're just fat.

Ignoring the stupid rationale of his argument, I do wonder why you would even bother requiring pregnant women to have HIV tests. For what reason? Are they going to give an anti-viral cocktail to a pregnant woman? Is it to protect Ob/Gyn's from contracting it during the birth?

So that she doesn't give it to the baby through breastfeeding, actually.

I was thinking that might be the case but you would think the chance of the baby contracting AIDS through breast milk have to be minuscule compared to them catching it through the sharing of a blood supply during the pregnancy. I guess not.

Babies treated with anti-retrovirals very soon after birth are much less likely to convert to HIV+ than babies who are not treated.

Most HIV transference cases happen during birth. It happens occasionally when breastfeeding, but is rather rare during pregnancy. Unsure why though.

Probably something to do with stem cells. Or maybe you can't get HIV until you have a soul, and this is Jesus' way of showing us that first and second trimester abortions really aren't murder.

You sir, are Un-American. In fact, that is too good for you. You are a harlot. A fool. A treasonous queer. I will say it once, then never again- and let not the words ring hollowed in your head to the hall- contemplate them, feel them, understand them, breathe them, own them: Why would you, a presumed American patriot, dare compare the pride of the world, American legislatures, to the bastion of evil and amoral sentiment- sharia law.

We are a good people, a noble people, a proud people. We are tolerant, intelligent, brave, and the very creators of freedom. We liberated the world, and you demoralize our immutable documents to the level of scum.

Sir, I understand that you are an atheist, but I have some words of warning for you. And this isn't coming as a Republican, a Christian, or even as an American; rather, I speak boldly and proudly as a humanist, espousing the values that have made our species great- God has a special place in hell for those that compare Lady Liberty to Totalitarians over a petty issue like sexual liberation. Let's just say that your chickens will come home to roost, and when reincarnation blesses you with another shot at the heaven we experience as humanity- you will pray to be born a Japanese school girl, as tentacle rape will have beeen the most pleasant experience you had experienced in a while.

sullyman: the sharing of a blood supply during the pregnancy

The mother and the baby do not share a blood supply. The mother's blood never mixes with the babies. Instead, all nutrients, dissolved gases, and waste products must cross the placental barrier to get to the baby.

I was going to ask if anyone knows if HIV can cross the placental barrier...

bobbette [TotalFark] 2009-02-25 10:33:21 PM
Four things.

1. How does this lawmaker think the ladies got pregnant in the first place? Is Colorado the land of virgin births? Being pregnant is generally proof you've been farking someone. And even if the woman has only ever slept with one guy, he could have HIV and transmit it to her.

2. Being made aware that you have HIV is generally not a "reward" for screwing a lot of people. Unless something's really messed up in Colorado and ladies are keeping their eyes on the prize.

3. Preventing a major HIV epidemic, which would be a public health and productivity disaster, in the general population is also not a "reward" for promiscuous people. Screening pregnant women and treating those with HIV with anti-retrovirals during birth and breastfeeding is a very effective way to keep the virus from being passed to their children. These kids will soon be playing on the playground with other little kids, maybe scraping their knees or cutting themselves with scissors accidentally during arts and crafts, and they would be especially vulnerable to illness anyway because they are little kids. Also, even if this lawmaker judges that these moms are promiscuous whores for having sex at least the one time that got them pregnant (because he's clearly an idiot and that's how he thinks), it's tragically stupid to condemn a baby to an early death and his entire lifespan on expensive, side-effect laden antiretrovirals that have to be carefully managed, because his mom somehow ended up with a disease that some dumbasses STILL consider to be "sin punishment".

4. There's a nasty, racist side to these comments. The majority of women who contract HIV, and who would discover it only through neonatal screening because of socioeconomic barriers to health care, are African-American. Was the State Senator aware of this when he determined that mothers with HIV as "promiscuous" and that treating these women and keeping their children HIV-free would constitute a "reward"? Yeah, he probably was.

I know there is a barrier but I would imagine any virus would have no problem passing through. Just about every drug molecule does and they are much larger than a virus.

The mere fact that you have acknowledged your penis' existence before marriage indicates that you are slave to your passions. Science has done great things, but in this instance, they have made a grave error in labeling our bit parts as sexual organs- sex is the propaganda the devil pushes to help us forget that Jesus died for our sins. What have you done for humanity lately?

Nurglitch 2009-02-25 10:56:46 PM
Sexual promiscuity in women promotes feminism, lesbianism, and witchcraft. It also destroy families, the fertility of our crops, and causes our heavenly father to turn his beneficence away from us.

Only when you are licensed to hunt them down and test them for HIV.

People need to be punished for their sins. Obviously God doesn't want people to be promiscuous sluts and enjoy the sweet amazingness that is casual sex, or else he wouldn't have given us the AIDS virus to keep us pure and righteous. The same goes for the mindnumbing, jaw clenching goodness that is anal sex. AIDS is God's way of reminding us that hot, sweaty, dirty man on man love is strictly prohibited, no matter how great it may feel.

From what I remember in biology, it doesn't. However, the risk of infection is very high during birth, which is why many states test for HIV, so they can take precautions and protect the baby.

As others have said, there are treatment options that VASTLY reduce the chances of the baby contracting HIV during birth, which is when it usually happens. The baby won't actually contract HIV while still in utero.

Actually the most likely way to pass HIV/AIDS to your baby is through breastfeeding. Mothers pass their antibodies through breast milk rather than inutero. Studies show that comparing babies born to women w/ AIDS and not breastfed had an increase in white blood cells and those who were breastfed had a greater decrease and a higher and longer exposure.

Babies born already being treated have a very very very manageable form of the virus for the rest of their lives and have even had cases where the virus wasn't even detected at a later age.

To prevent it from transmitting to the baby. Without any special precautions, there's about a 45% chance to transmit the disease to the baby, but with antivirals, C section, and bottle feeding, that can be cut to around 2%.

Nope, viruses are a good sight bigger than (I believe just about every) drug molecule.

Barring some large-ish biologicals like insulin. Which I think is likely still quite a bit smaller than a virus.

You are hereby sentenced to a semester of the microbiology/cell biology/virology/biochemistry class of your choice.

Meh, pregnancy and HIV are punishment for sluts and prostitutes. Without both, there would be no counter-incentive for a girl not to feed her instatiable hunger for raw sweety sex.

This is how a true player capitalizes on this. See, there is nothing more that fark up a pimp-game than STD or a baby. (except incarseration.) That's why I alway make my biatches make their marks strap up. biatch get pregnant or a little too dirty, she's out the door. Broken property a toy no one wants to play with.

Clean Christian girls, like that senator be raising. The one's who grew up with square propoganda blasting in their ears, they the one who take to whoring the best. Nasty little sluts who dig cash, and keep their money pots clean, they get broken real well.
