Pompeii fired up ash for a week before finally blowing. With modern transport we could clear out the area in under 24 hours.

If they got on the damn buses.

Heck St Helens is one of the lower concerns, I mean it is "Low Stress" compared to others in the cascades, if Gov Jindal thinks this is a poor use of money, lets talk about who needs levies? Or flood protection, I mean it dose not affect me in my state so it must be useless right?

What a farking tool.

7of7 [TotalFark] 2009-02-25 04:45:58 PM
Hey there governor how about we get rid of hurricane prediction too? As for the "it's not stimulus" people, maybe it's not the most efficient stimulus, but it definitely puts people to work and has a good purpose compared to the classical "digging holes and filling them back in" approach.

tchamber 2009-02-25 04:46:26 PM
It's as stupid as McCain calling a Planetarium hub an "Overhead Projector".

WTF is wrong with the Republicans? Or are they just assuming that more than 50% of Americans really are so stupid they'll believe anything they hear on TV?

Yeah uh about that. it took us a week to get water to New Orleans how long do you think it would take to organize an evacuation?

The fact that the best they could come up with in the "official" Republican response to Obama's speech was to to whine about a government expenditure as tangible, understandable, and (in the eyes of non-insane people) useful as monitoring volcanoes to determine whether they might erupt soon is tantamount to an official announcement that "We got nuthin'." Isn't this the kind of thing that government is supposed to do?

make me some tea [TotalFark] 2009-02-25 05:12:16 PM
While we're at it, why don't we cut funding on the useless pork that is Hoover Dam and Glen Canyon Dam? What good are they, really? The hell with those stupid people who live in deserts, let em dry up.

Additionally, we should privatize the volcano monitoring industry, and fund it by charging for tours and selling volcano memorabilia!

pwhp_67 2009-02-25 05:24:26 PM
Meh. Who needs it?

We should take back every dollar. Quit looking out for earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes too.

New Orleans evacuated over 95% of the population before Hurricane Gustav. Night and day difference from Katrina. Bush - still there when Gustav hit. Nagin - still there (not mentally) when Gustav hit. The governor - different guy. It's just a matter of working out the logistics in advance and sticking to it when the bell rings.

It's been erupting non-stop since 1983 actually. Monitoring it over the years has saved lots of lives.

Volcano research also aids in developing new methods of identifying underground mineral deposits, like, I dunno, oil. You'd think you'd have to beat them off funding this with a stick.

No, you see Hawaii IS a volcano. Once we get rid of volcano monitoring, Hawaii will erupt, a with those island welfare queens out of the way, Hussein can take his fake birth certificate back to Kenya where it belongs and Sarah Palin will become President! BOBBY JINDAL WITH THE CHECK AND MATE! SUCK IT LIBS!

The fail of that would be beyond epic. Imagine foreign leaders buying ad time to say "For the love of all that is good and holy, reelect Obama". And that would be the message from Syria and Iran. Imagine what the English would say.

bobbette [TotalFark] 2009-02-25 06:36:15 PM
People who actually live near active volcanoes might disagree on funding volcano research with the Governor of the state where people live near hurricanes.

i199.photobucket.com
Here's Mt. Rainier, a recently active volcano, looming over Seattle, part of the Cascade volcanic range that includes Mt. St. Helens, which I think last had a major pyroclastic flow in 2006. Cool fact: Seattle has a volcano evacuation route because of Mt. Rainier and the risk of lahars.

i199.photobucket.com
Mt. Baker (which is just outside Bellingham, Washington, about halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, BC) is another Cascade volcano, seen with Vancouver in the foreground. Volcanic activity was last noticed there in about the 1880s. Uh, please don't stop monitoring this one, because Vancouver and Seattle and I suspect especially the people of Bellingham would like a heads up if it's about to cover us in sulfuric rain and release a burning hot avalanche-river of ash and mud and debris (a lahar), which is an even bigger risk with Baker since it's a giant glacier.

Hawaii - this is the hazard alert for Kilauea today:
i199.photobucket.com
HAZARD ALERT: The lava delta and adjacent areas both inland and out to sea are some of the most hazardous areas on the flow field. Frequent delta/bench collapses give little warning, can produce hot rock falls inland and in the adjacent ocean, and can produce large but local waves. The steam plume produced by lava entering the ocean contains fine lava fragments and an assortment of acid droplets that can be harmful to your health. The rapidly changing conditions near the ocean entry have been responsible for many injuries and a few deaths.

Yellowstone is actually a supervolcano, on 3 different calderas.

There's also a crapload of volcanoes in Alaska, which you should check out here (new window)

well... to be fair, if that volcano blows we would have to evacuate everybody east of it to Mexico.

Bill_Wick's_Friend 2009-02-25 06:44:29 PM
Jindal should just exorcise the demons from all them volcanoes so they'll stop erupting.

Problem solved....and without having to resort to "science" or any other deviltry.

bobbette: People who actually live near active volcanoes might disagree on funding volcano research with the blah blah blah science mumbo jumbo crap

WHATEVER. Volcanoes do NOT need to be monitored. They're freaking huge. If one of them is about the blow, then the ground shakes. Then you know it's time to leave. WHAT is so hard about THAT?

Besides, if you are a good person, then God will protect you. So I don't have a lot of sympathy for those of you that perish in the ashes and lava.

/and so can YOU

Now, if it was Palin, it might make sense, since she's reportedly a Young-Earth Creationist who doesn't believe in "Millions and Millions of Years".

What makes you think Palin will be willing to play second fiddle?
