You're implying malice where simple military administrative stupidity can be applied instead.

Smart move. We wouldn't HAVE a force in Afstan if it hadn't been for the willingness of reservists to step up, particularly as riflemen, or everyone in the regs would now be on their fifth tour with three more to go.

An honest type of mistake. Rumsfeld said these sorts of wars pay for themselves. Always trust Republican appointed ministers - they are the last honest cowboys.

Look, it's a recession and we all have to do our part. Cutbacks are the name of the game until we get out of this mess. Those guys need to stop whining and tighten their belts and take one for the team. This is why Canada will never be on par with the US of A, they just don't know what real sacrifice is.

/how'd I do?

Hey, a zamboni encased in chicken wire is at least as RPG-proof as a Stryker.

Their pay and benefits weren't at risk. They just weren't receiving them.

Nice try. Our soldiers deserve better than this crap.

Well, take it as you will, but I don't usually believe in huge Canadian conspiracy to not pay currently deployed soldiers. Only the US does that, jeeez

Grass Hopper: Their pay and benefits weren't at risk. They just weren't receiving them.

Nice try? By quoting the article?

In the e-mail, they said they had problems. I didn't say there wasn't any. Only thing I was trying to say is that it wasn't intentional to cut their pay.

I was going to make a snarky, tasteless comment here.

But I'll say this instead. Thanks for sticking with us, Canada, even through our most colossal farkups. We appreciate the sacrifice of your troops almost as much as we appreciate the sacrifice of our own.

Don't pretend you know what you're talking about just because you're a Canadian reporter who stayed with the Canadian forces in Afghanistan earlier this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if you were the submitter for this one. Have you gotten your fix for your submitting habit yet today?

"Canada sounds like it's run by the Republican Party."

In the 2008 elections the opposition parties did attempt to portray PM Harper as cut from the cloth as former President Bush, with limited success.

I'm sure this troop funding issue is just an administrative oversight, which I'm not going to hold against Mr. Harper.

There are bigger grudges to hold against Mr. Harper: He, and his party, called the attempted coalition a "coup d'état" and said that members(& possibly supporters) of the coalition are "unCanadian". His willingness to exploit the ignorance of Canadians in the workings of their Westminster Parliamentary system is unacceptable. I expect a Prime Minister to behave better than that.

Tr0mBoNe [TotalFark] 2009-02-25 04:36:45 PM
This has nothing to do with the economy. Their contracts ran out and that's that.

They're worried about getting hurt as their insurance and benefits also ran out. They'll likely get paid once they return, but that will be tough. Like getting blood from a brick.

The Voice of Sarcastic Reason: Is that a common view in the Regular Force these days?

Pretty much universal, from colonels to corporals. And there is no distinction made between reserves and regs in theatre - they all wear the same uniforms.

As the programmer who built the health care benefits app for reservists, and is in touch on a daily basis with the its users, I can assure you that we haven't denied benefits to any reservists in Afghanistan.
Yeah, clerical errors occur, and some pertinent paperwork doesn't get to us on time, but in now way have any of those glitches ever led to denied health benefits.

I thought Canada was supposed to have socialized medicine. If this is true, no matter what excuse you make, this is not exactly a ringing endorsement for implementing it in the US.

Your understanding of the issue is deeply flawed.

This has everything to do with military bureaucracy, and NOTHING to do with "socialized medicine."

Absolutely. I already have the Reg Force sniffing around my reserve unit to see how many troops we'll be able to cough up for upcoming rotations.
