I didn't see it because I had other obligations, but I hope he rocked the house last night.

A national poll indicates that two-thirds of those who watched President Barack Obama's address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night had a very positive reaction to his speech.

Um, they only polled 484 people.

Every picture from this speech makes me want to smack Nancy Pelosi. I only voted for her for hometown advantage and because the other choice sucked more.

That is a common misconception, because while a German invented the automobile, it was an American that created the process to mass produce it and thus made it a ubiquitous transportation device.

Only time will tell if Obama's policies will turn this country around or not, but damn, it was refreshing to see someone at that podium with a command of the English language.

No, I understand that part, but I wanted to know if he actually said that Americans invented the automobile.

How dare they claim that Americans liked the speech without asking all 300,000,000 of them.

Yeah, he said, "And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it." He should have said the nation that invented the mass production of the automobile to be factually correct, but that would not have rolled off the tongue as well.

Define "shallow"

pixistick: He said that?

Regarding the auto industry, "The country that invented the automobile will not abandon the industry" or something like that. The point was "We won't let it collapse." I have seen a lot of people trying to make hay out of the turn of phrase, but if that's honestly the most troubling thing in that speech, then you're either content with everything else or completely neurotic. Whether we invented the thing or just invented the mass manufacture thereof, it doesn't change the point of the rhetoric.

I am personally much more concerned with how he plans to fund some of the amazing things he talked about (free education through a bachelor's degree?) than I am about some extremely minor error in trivia.

As far as the cars thing, how to put this. I don't care who invented it, I want to know why I'm about to own a huge stake in a company that can't compete viably. Maybe, just maybe, if GM and Chrysler or whoever else is on the brink manage to fail, someone with a viable product will rise from the ashes and bring to market a product that doesn't suck. Those companies have used their united market dominance to crush newcomers for a very long time (Example: The Tucker) and it kind of boggles me that we are suddenly subsidizing that business model.

Is it not also refreshing to feel like we're having an adult conversation, instead of Daddy lecturing his kids?

If we're going to be bent over and reamed with another bailout package, I'm glad it's being done by someone who can actually speak well.

It was a speech, not a business class.

"And I believe the nation that perfected mass production of the automobile after it was invented by Germany who maintained a craft production mentality cannot walk away from it."

Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Facts, schmacts, as long as it sounds good, what's the big deal? You know the old saying about what to do with a bad piece of meat: "If you can't sell the steak, then you've got to sell the sizzle."

Dancin_In_Anson: He just...what's the word? Oh yeah. He "misspoke".

No, he said it intentionally. He either deliberately said it because it sounds better or had the facts of who invented the automobile wrong. Either way, that isn't the reason he wants to bailout the auto industry so I don't see why it matters.

This is really the same petty shiat that helped lose the GOP the election.

Does him saying that autos were invented in the US change anything? Anything at all?

If you want to pick apart policy proposals or positions on key issues, go right ahead. But when the only big criticism is "OMG I wiki'd cars and they were invented in Germany you are so dumb Obama" it just looks sad.

It's a joke, Chuckles. Don't get your knickers in a twist. There is a wide range between outrage and trolling. Consider it somewhere in between in that happy place we call "snark."

Actually, an American designed and applied for a patent before Benz, but the prototype didn't get built.

Anyway, it's an incredibly trivial point.

Evidentially none whatsoever. I guess from now on when we listen to him give prepared speeches, we need to check back here to find out what he meant and not what he said. Will you be so kind as to start the thread for us? I suggest something like this:

I think it's good-- in terms of the large, factory farms.

I think this is great. There's no reason for the federal government to be using taxpayer dollars to subsidize profitable farms and inhibit importation of alternative crops.

It from pokin' his head in the mailbox looking for his government check.
