He could do that through an executive decision, true (i.e., 'interpret the law this way,' just like our favorite former president was fond of doing)...but the only real change can come from legislation (or a ruling from SCOTUS via the 10th Amendment). Mary Jane is too much of a bogeyman for that to ever happen.

If enough states would allow medical marijuana, the volume of cases would overwhelm the DEA, and maybe some progress could be made for further legalization.

Barack Obama has said he would prevent the DEA from raiding medical marijuana patients/suppliers in states where it is legal (Including mine, Michigan). Having said that, that will make it to convince citizens in the rest of the states to pass medical marijuana laws.

If enough states legalize marijuana, especially by referendums, it'll build the case for the Federal government to let it be legal and undisturbed.

A legislator in my state, California, is pushing for the full legalization of it. And the Guardian has estimated that legalizing it would bring California $13B in revenue (not to mention the amount of money saved by not enforcing the laws against it).

Hey California Republicans: Don't want that $14B raise in taxes? End the stupid, needless prohibition of marijuana.

Remember that the next time you have an ache and reach for the aspirin/ibuprofen. A drug is simply any article, other than food, intended to affect the structure or any function of the body of humans. Personally, I'm all for better living through chemistry...

Pot threads are always so enlightening.

It's like everyone forgets that they've been saying the same shiat as in every other pot thread for years now. You don't (or do) smoke pot and there's no reason it should be illegal. Also, cops are bad (or good) sometimes.

Also, the government. Yes, you read that right. The government. And I'll stand behind that.

gusto1214 2009-02-25 11:52:17 AM
I think what's important here and what this shows is that there is a general shift in norms concerning marijuana that's beginning to trickle all the way up to Washington. Sure, it's a long road to legalization that's full of potential impediments, but on a long enough timeline, legislation tends to change to reflect societal perceptions. It could just be that I've been living in the godless northeast and california all my life, but here at least everyone seems to be at least for decrimminalization. This is how these things start, and once people in a position to do something about it figure out not only how much public perception has shifted, but how much money they have to gain (see shower_in_my_socks comment) from more rational approaches to marijuana i think we will start to see increasingly rapid changes in legislation. Definately within our lifetimes, perhaps even while the current administration is still in office.

It's like when I go to a fast-food drive through and I order something and then say, "No tomatoes". Then the person over the speaker says, "That doesn't come with tomatoes". I say, "Ok then." It's like that.

Maybe you think I'm someone else?

oldernell: If enough states would allow medical marijuana, the volume of cases would overwhelm the DEA, and maybe some progress could be made for further legalization.

Sure, the number of drug cases would go up, but "overwhelm?" Why, for that to happen, the number of prisoners would have to be multiplied by 10, growing to over 2 million. And for that to happen, states would have to pay more for prisons than they do for universities. And the only way that would happen is if drug cartels made marijuana into their number one product.

No, I think all of those things would be pretty unlikely in a rational free democratic society.

My only complaint really is that you have to smoke it. As such it would linger on you, your clothes, your property etc. If I had to work with the public [thank god I don't] I wouldn't want to be exposed to that.

Find a way to eat it, or drink it, and I'm a-ok with it.

I believe he already did. After the election, the DEA stepped up raids on medical marijuana clinics in Cali, just to see what Obama's reaction would be (and probably to up their stats, as busting a medical clinic is like robbing an old lady) and he told them to knock it the fark off.

Buy a vaporizer. $200 at your local headshop and you too can fill clear plastic bags with invisible, nigh-odorless weed essence.

also pot smoke difuses way better/faster than cigarette/cigar smoke and does not linger in clothes/hair/breath, etc.

I hate to tell all you pot-heads this, but Marijuana is poison and it will destroy your brain. If you smoke too much of it you get sick and throw up and sometimes you die. Is that not enough proof of how bad this substance is? Thousands of people overdose on it every year. Many of them children. This plant is a menace that needs to stay illegal forever.

"If the Federal Government can regulate growing a half-dozen cannabis plants for personal consumption (not because it is interstate commerce, but because it is inextricably bound up with interstate commerce), then Congress' Article I powers -- as expanded by the Necessary and Proper Clause -- have no meaningful limits. Whether Congress aims at the possession of drugs, guns, or any number of other items, it may continue to 'appropria[te] state police powers under the guise of regulating commerce.'"
-Clarence Thomas' dissent in Gonzales v. Raich (wiki)

If Clarence-freaking-Thomas (and O'Conner, and Rhenquist) gets that is is UNCONSTITUTIONAL to declare mere possession of pot a violation of Amdt X, Thomas being the one who never met a federal intrusion into the private sphere he didn't like ('cept the gunzzzz), WTF is wrong with you prissy, pusillanimous, pretentious, puritanical prudes that you can't understand?

We are not lawless sociopaths. We are not political prisoners. We are not brainless anarchists. We are not rapists, murderers, thieves, charlatans, communists, hippies, drags on society, or demonically possessed*.

We cook your food, drive you to work, supervise your factory floors, protect you (yes, I know cops and soldiers/airmen/Marines who do/did it), make you well when you are sick, protect you from injustice, and perform many of the essential functions that make your life what it is.

We are all around you, and we're closeted because of your draconian desires to deny our RIGHT as Americans (using that free market you love so much) to engage in free trade of goods. The founding fathers would biatch slap you freedom-hating anti-capitalist swine. Then they'd draft a new Constitution on hemp paper.
