Whoa...hot chick band there.

Good lord, death metal bands are fukking hilarious. They just take themselves so SERIOUSLY in their greasepaint and pleather, all singing about doom, gloom, sturm und drang. I have always found it completely impossible not to laugh at them openly.

I think it's more that that's what their fans expect out of them, so that's the way they act. It's all about the money, man!

I formed a death metal/country band called Shank Killums.

/kinda on topic.

Good job, I find it completely impossible not to enjoy Death Metal openly.

/most of those bands play Black Metal anyway

Kinda kills the metal image doesn't it?

Oh and poor picture, bad lighting, but it looks like I'd nail 4/5 of Scatha. Maybe only 3, not sure about second from the left.

FTFY.

I hate black metal so much.

yeah, it's mostly black metal bands that take fro tolkien. most death metal bands would rather be associated with gore, the occult or even obscure medical terminology among other things.

Amon Amarth, Cirith Ungol, and Gorgoroth are all locations in Tolkien's writings. This top 10 is characters.

Missing from list.

mhd 2009-02-24 04:12:03 PM
Puh-lease. Try entering "x y" into google, where x equals almost any name from Tolkien's writings, and y stands for 'rock' or 'metal' and you'll find a band. Or at least some cool Quenya and Sindarin words.

Also: List is farkin' missing Marillion. As if they'd fool anything besides the law...

God bless some of you (yes, you mhd and you Shadow Penguin) for letting me know that I'm not that far gone. I was just counting which names I knew the orgin of, and I got like 7 or 8. I may yet be saved from total and complete innerdhilation.

Nope, I just program a metal show on my radio station and I know Amon's origins from doing show prep and am OUTRAGED they were snubbed on this blog. Then again The Gauntlet sucks anyway.

/you're beyond help nerd ;)

Amon means "hill"

/I'm so FARKED!

I can understand the exclusion of Gorgoroth and Ephel Duath due to the focus on characters from the series. However, skipping Gandalf is simply inexcusable.

How was Amon Amarth snubbed when they aren't named after a character in Tolkien's books?

I've been a fair number of death/black metal concerts, and have concluded that it's just really, really well done satire. Obviously that probably can't be said about all metal bands, but for the most part, they have great senses of humor.

/Orodruin gets my vote

All the fail from these bands linking themselves to Tolkien still cannot stain the eternal win of the Led Zepplin Tolkien-inspired songs.

In another few years, Warhammer 40K will probably top Tolkien for geek references in death metal.

At any rate, DMC makes all these wannabes look like pusses. I pledge my soul to Krauser and bask in awe of the glorious 'Eleven Rapes in One Second'.

thegauntlet: Amon Amarth

"Amon Amarth" is elvish for "Mount Doom." So not only is it pretty metal, but the band completely delivers in terms of what you'd expect from their namesake.

CrankMyBlueSax 2009-02-24 05:59:18 PM
I'm gonna start an all chick band and call it "Arwen's Putrid Hole".

Surely there has to be a Gollum.
Link (new window)

I'm sure there is a Shadowfax, a Peregrin etc...

Gordon Sumner thinks the idea of naming bands after things from Middle Earth is stupid.

doodoobutter 2009-02-24 06:20:36 PM
i don't know any bands with lotr names (although many of you are citing them), but i have an issue with "usurper", if only because it is an english word, not a made-up one.

The only fantasy metal band you need is The Sword.

They talk about The Song of Ice and Fire, not some queer books with gayass midgets playing grabass.

Weigard: The only fantasy metal band you need is The Sword.

That is a lie! They are pretentious hipsters attempting to fool people into thinking that they are a good metal band.

nicoffeine: Missing:

The article specifically said it was focusing on bands named after characters, not places. And why does a Middle-Earth band have the cover of Stormbringer, the DAW edition of the last volume of the Elric of Melnibone series? Elric didn't live in Middle Earth.

FTA:
The Balrog of Moria were winged creatures.

I'm going to raise the geek ante here. I actually have this bookmarked:
The Truth About Balrogs

Volume 6: Do Balrogs have wings, and can they fly?
(^)

After reading that article and its links, I came down on the side of "wings were a figure of speech" and refused to buy the WETA winged Balrog figurine that cost $350 new and now sells for $1000 on eBay. Probably the wrong time to make a stand of conscience.

What about bands that build albums around Tolkien?

(Blind Guardian, I'm looking at you, Nightfall in Middle Earth was awesome but YOU FELL INTO THE TRAP.)
