Perhaps these are things we are better off not knowing. Perhaps Obama is trying to protect the shred of dignity Bush has left.

FlyingLizardOfDoom [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 04:32:06 PM
What do these people think they will find if the emails are recovered?

FlyingLizardOfDoom: What do these people think they will find if the emails are recovered?

Recipes, forwarded chain letters and linked-in invitations. Why?

furiousxgeorge [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 04:44:12 PM
FlyingLizardOfDoom: What do these people think they will find if the emails are recovered?

Bush sent $10 trillion to a Nigerian prince.

Brettster808 [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 04:49:31 PM
Okay. And what would you be writing for a headline if Obama went full tilt to find out the truth about Bush? I'm sure it would be another headline bash. Get over it.

HansensDisease [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 04:52:08 PM
Brettster808: what would you be writing for a headline if Obama went full tilt to find out the truth about Bush?

"ZOMG! Traitorous Muslin reveals vital national seekrits!"

No, he's trying to set precedent so that one day he can do the same. Actually, I have no idea about that but I'm pretty gloomy about executive power being given back willingly. :(

Hau Ruck [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 05:05:32 PM
Brettster808: And what would you be writing for a headline if Obama went full tilt to find out the truth about Bush?

"Obama demands recovery of Bush / RNC e-mail system messages -- top administration officials checking housing prices in all countries without extradition treaties with US"

There ya go.

Mordant [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 05:17:49 PM
I shudder to think of the outrage if he wasn't keeping these emails secret.

Probably the closest to the truth.

Probably nothing. But if nothing else, it'd be nice to see those emails made public if only to send the message that nobody is above the law - not even the office of the President.

I don't see anything in the article about an action by the Obama administration to defend the Bush administration.

What I see is that the Justice Department has not yet grokked the policy change about government transparency.

This might yet be corrected. Translation: they haven't yet fired all the Bush people in the Justice Department.

Psh... can you just picture this "discovery"?

"Good heavens, Dick, I just discovered that we're not maintaining any kind of electronic paper-trail of our activities!"

"Gracious, George, let's correct that immediately! We certainly wouldn't want the American people to not know what we're up to!"

Neocons aren't whining about this, you half-wit.

And I apologize to all of the half-wits out there. That was unfair.

The reason why he is doing this is obvious; he doesn't want to distract people from the real, more pressing problems of the day. There simply isn't enough time or will in the american public to go after bush AND fix our economy, the international situation, etc.

Whether that's right or wrong, that's how it is.

Pretty much. Everyone wants their pet project addressed immediately. It's simply the most pressing, urgent need out there. Why can't he see that?

Meh, I disagree. Presidents don't go after other President because they're guaranteed to be up next on the chopping block. That and Bush isn't guilty of all your hsyterical war crime accusations. That would also be why Obama continues to enforce MOST of his policies.

Karma Chameleon 2009-02-22 06:26:34 PM

President Obama is focused on bringing the Country together and getting this Economy ClusterFark out of the swamp.

if he allows this to go thru and they star investigating emails, then there is no way he can get everyone on the same page.

this would split the country even more.

if they want to go after emails, there will be plenty of time for that later when we get out of this financial crises.

this is not rocketscience. Farkers should know Obama's goals and why he will not pursue this.

Shall we discuss some big ones? FISA? Extraordinary Rendition? Legal status of enemy combatants?

I don't know what the heads of the CIA and DOJ are contributing to fixing the economy that they can't take a break from, but I sure as hell know what would distract me from financial troubles and make me a lot more confident about investing in America. They could even put the trial on pay-per-view and start paying down debt.

I doubt that. It's been like this since the beginning of this country, what with the Philadelphia Convention and all. And those writings didn't come out until 80 years later!

Smacky the Frog 2009-02-22 06:39:02 PM
It looks like Obama is giving us the chance to prove that we're not partisan hacks and will be just as critical of him as we were of Bush.

That being said, it's only been a month and he's starting to piss me off. Still waiting for the righteousness that we're expecting from him. I know there's a lot of inherited bullshiat for him to shovel around, I'm just not happy with how he's disposing of it.

Yes, he really should have sorted out those really simple issues in his first month. I mean, it's not like anything else is going on right now.

Freaking slacker.

Hurrr!

Shryke: Shall we discuss some big ones? FISA? Extraordinary Rendition? Legal status of enemy combatants?

Sure.

1. FISA: Obama voted for a compromise.

2. Extraordinary rendition: Obama has stated he's ending this. (Please note the difference between extraordinary rendition, and rendition).

3. Legal status of enemy combatants: There's no such thing as enemy combatants.

FISA was not Bush Administration policy. The Bush admin violated both the original and new FISA bills. The FISA bill was mostly a good thing, the problem being the immunity for telecom companies. Obama voted to remove that amendment, but then decided the overall bill was worth that one bad amendment. I don't quite agree, but it wasn't like FISA was a very pro-Bush bill. Also, on extraordinary rendition, although he left the door open, it's a lot closer to closed than it was under Bush. He hasn't done enough, but he hasn't done nothing. On the third item, you're completely correct, and I'm pretty mad about that. And denying torture victims the right to sue.

Burn98 2009-02-22 06:39:59 PM
Shryke: Presidents don't go after other President because they're guaranteed to be up next on the chopping block.

Except that Bush did go after Clinton, falsely accusing him and his staff of trashing the White House. Also he released as much information about the Clinton presidency as he could get his hands on, while protecting his father's information.

Not before.

there is probably skull & bones shiat that implicates most, if not all of our elected leaders.

i'm sure there is blame to go around, in both 'parties'.

-dubya was probably too dense to never, ever clear his cache (9/11 gloating...iraq war gloating)...and there's no telling the horrors on cheneys laptop.

i pretty much expected this from mccain...but not from obama.

it's called public service for a reason.

-it's our business they are attending to.
chris mathews get your shiat together!...and quit swooning! omg!111!

this actually should be an outrage, given the lives lost in iraq and elsewhere, due to chimpy and darth.

i have to hope that obama knows what he's doing.

-people are "herd" like, afterall.

until they actually see a ufo.

Semi-Sane 2009-02-22 06:45:30 PM
Obama is finally starting to comprehend reality. Some information is better off staying classified. The public doesn't need to know the inner workings of the government.

flannelled fool 2009-02-22 06:45:31 PM

They may at least want to look at the last e-mail:

To: POTUS
From: Dick
Re: WMD

You know when I sent that e-mail about making up some lame excuse to invade Iraq? Well one of my computer whizzes says he knows how to break in and erase them all. We're gonna need some flashlights, batteries, and WD-40.
