Maybe I missed it, but the article doesn't even contain the farking list.

It contains a link to another article that contains the list.

In the form of a 15-page slideshow.

Subby?

FAIL.

No, and apparently neither can the author.

Quick, do you know how much I hate slide shows disguised as lists?

This isn't event that good. It's an article with a link to a slideshow disguised as a list.

Las Vegas the emptiest city? No way. I moved there back in the 90's when everyone was still moving there. I read something that said for every 1,000 people that moved from Vegas, 2,000 people moved in. And this went on for years, so I can't imagine it can be too empty. It's just the current vacancy rate for homes and rentals which are probably way on the outskirts of Vegas.

I wish Boston had a vacancy rise as rental prices are still insane. Just look at some of the rental rates on Craigslist for Boston apartments. It's unbelievable.

The link to the list is hard to find. It goes to a slideshow. I no longer care.

ifrog 2009-02-22 10:55:55 AM
i live in atlanta and after seeing all the vacant McMansions lying empty with the sod not even set i am not getting a kick out of this.

not to mention the half million dollar condos they keep building in the slums. and building and building.

cuz if there's one thing this city needs it's even more housing for homeless millionaires. they must be our largest demographic judging by all this new construction.

/not at all surprised that this was all just a money scam of grand proportions

Here's page one:

Las Vegas edged Detroit for the title of America's most abandoned city. Atlanta came in third, followed by Greensboro, N.C., and Dayton, Ohio.

That's as far as I'm going.

I think this vacancy rate is connected to the fact that "we" built 1000's more dwellings than were needed and now that the real estate bubble has burst--we have thousands more dwellings than we need. It always appeared that way to me, anyway. I looked at all these houses going up, everywhere, and though, Who the fark is going to buy in these houses? Our population isn't growing that fast, and even if it was, they aren't buying $300,000 houses.

I lived in a tiny tourist town in Montana. Even there, the construction boom went crazy. There's one subdivision in town--there's one, total, that is--and I think half of the homes in it are either empty or for sale. it's been like for at least 10 years. Probably worse now.

I think I may need a good cry now. Boston is one of my top grad school choices, which means I'll be dirt poor in a very expensive (albeit fantastic) city.

This. I can't name them because this list is not in the article. But luckily there is a not very well labeled link to slideshow of the list. Oh joy!

Yeah, let me know when San Francisco becomes cheap and empty too.

I can believe Vegas is number one. Empty houses, apartments and businesses everywhere. There are some parts of town that are really extra creepy now.

Only 4% for Detroit? Really?

I know that's almost 1/20, but even if you drive through areas like Pontiac (or Flint for that matter), it seems like a lot more than 4% vacant. I guess I can't tell the difference between a rental and a for-sale home from the street.

Scary stuff, all around.

anonymousgirl 2009-02-22 11:14:54 AM
I'm originally from Greensboro and lived there up until a year ago. I'm not surprised. High point is a hell hole.

I didn't RTFA, but I guess I am a little confused as to what constitutes an empty city...cuz, to me empty would be lacking of people...not neccesarily having too many houses/apartments...

I assumed you were just holding to some sort of standard, expecting us to remember from TFA that Vegas and Detroit held the top spots.

Really clumsily written article.

The writer is lucky to work for (or be contracted by) ABC.

FTFA: Many homeowners suddenly found themselves with properties worth far less than the mortgages they'd taken out. In the worst cases, banks foreclosed, leaving people without homes--and with more debt than they'd had to begin with.

Thank you summer of 2008 article!

I have to question their definition for "emptiest." There are entire city blocks in detroit that have a single house on them.

Middletown, KY? Never heard of it. The slideshow folks either meant Covington, KY or Middletown, OH.
