With South Korea in center of said peninsula, presumably?

Nuclear energy would be a huge boon to South Korea, as they're notoriously lacking in natural resources. On the other hand, those pesky neighbors to the north are awfully dangerous and they tend to bring down the property value of the whole area.

It seemed to me that the Sunshine Policy was making great inroads towards developing the north even despite its despotic leaders. Regardless of how bad a president No Mu-hyeon was, Kim Dae-Joong had a good idea with the policy of openness with the traditionally closed-off communist north.

And then, of course, the north tested a couple bombs. I Myeong-bak used this as a campaign platform in 2007 and won the election by a landslide and promptly disbanded the Sunshine Policy. Now tensions on the peninsula are greater than ever. I can't say with 100% certainty that the two events are inextricably linked, but it does seem that there's a causal relation there.

Should the peninsula be nuke-free? Probably free of nuclear weapons, yes. The Koreas face no aggression from any surrounding country and all that the bombs do is to incur sanctions against foreign aid.

that's funny: north korea has a plan for the peninsula as well. it calls for "northern expansion into the previously autonomous southern zone, followed by an expanded slavering adulation of the Dear Leader."

Yeah, the nukes are not what is going to hurt South Korea. Its all those mortar & missiles aimed at them from the border with chemical weapons as a payload.

It's really more of a Peninsula.

The Sun-shine policy was basically a scam. SK played nice and NK demanded more and more supplies.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong Ill kept as tight a rein on power as ever, and nothing really changed.

I lived in Korea for a year, now I live on another peninsula.

Its a peninsula thing, you wouldn't understand.

Cue North Korea redefining "peninsula" to include only that portion of the land that South Korea occupies.

rastilin 2009-02-22 02:57:52 PM
Wasn't there an article recently entitled "North Korea denounces US military aggression". This after threatening to blow the south to bits and testing new missiles that can hit the US directly; what are they expecting?

Clemond N. Flinch: Koreans eat dogs.

I once had a Korean eat my dog, and I quite enjoyed it.
