In other words we're basically telling China that if we go down we're taking them with us.

I don't get why more people aren't talking about this. Thats such a ridiculous statement.

"By continuing to support American Treasury instruments, the Chinese are recognizing our interconnection," Clinton said. "We are truly going to rise or fall together."

Maybe we could print up some nice, inspirational posters for the Chinese to put up on the street corners:

/ secretly glad somebody is financing our stupidity

in a way it's not an outrageous statement though. if you look at the 30s as an example, the economic crisis alone could easily pose much greater human rights risks. panicked people do crazy things.

Is she sellin the Senate seat over there?

They are the high bidders.

No we won't. We are and will continue to do whatever they want. As soon as they decide to cut off the funding, our economy collapses and they invade.

Simple as that.

Do you really think Bush, and now Obama have been screaming that the sky is falling because some banks might fail and houses foreclosed on? Grow up.

It's a positively chilling quote when you consider Hillary's many attempts to force health care change on this country. If she's willing to sacrifice human rights concerns for fiscal gain, it makes me wonder what she would really do to health care if given the chance.

One of the many reasons I didn't vote for her. I think Obama's just making sure there's no way she can run in 2012 if his efforts to fix the economy haven't come to fruition. "I just need a little more time, and while I'm taking that time we AREN'T going to start any sweat shops, unlike some people I know."

As I recall, her stand was remarkably similar when she was on the board of directors of Wal-Mart during their great push toward China (Walmart's imports from China more than quadrupled in the years she was on the board). "Our (wipe a tear) human rights concerns can't interfere with this business opportunity."

Uh, not so much. China invading the US? That's Activision's wet-dream. What the fark would China want with American territory? More likely, if America goes into serious decline, China will re-assert itself in SE and Central Asia and press for a final resolution of the Taiwanese issue, but its hard to imagine them going all imperialistic on the world.

China props the US up because it doesn't want to take responsibility for leadership of the world and/or have to talk down Russia by itself. In fact, it can't do either. Given serious long-term US decline, China will be more, not less worried about its security. It needs a strong US as much as the US needs a strong China.

True, and during her years on Walmart's board she did almost nothing for women in the work place. She seems to have little problem with sweatshops....

She probably saw China as a nice reminder of Arkansas sweaty Tyson chicken plants.

Except when we go down we'll all generally have access to clean water, food, etc. China and India have got some shiat to deal with. Although, it probably does make a certain amount of sense to praise China in public and in private keep talking about human rights, and how they can learn from US history about how it can lower internal pressures, increase productivity.

But she didn't just say it should be put on the backburner just for the economic crisis. She also said the climate change and global security.

Is she saying Guantanamo Bay torturing people is ok? I mean, human rights is not as important as security according to her.

Yea, not the best choice for Sec. of State. We gotta do the best with what we are stuck with though.

I wonder how long before she says/does something to undermine Obama. It's no secret there is NO love lost there.

Wow. Profits over people. A blatent admission of that. Disgusting. And of course playing up the "national security" angle. Good pick, Obama.

ilambiquated: I think she's wrong. China no longer needs America all that much.

Yah China does: China gets educated in the West; They steal our technology, so they need us to keep our R and D up; We buy all their cheap shiat, which keeps the people from rioting more than they usually do; China is no where near ready to catch up militarily; We build all their huge projects, like the three gorges dam; And their economy is basically an overinflated mirage that we delude ourselves into believing because they buy our debt.

Youre right shes not a good choice. But just because we are stuck with her though is no excuse for why when she says stupid shiat its not a big issue.

"Overlords"? All because China did us a favor by buying our humongous debt? Isn't that the free market in action?

Serve the U.S. right if China decides to take all the U.S. debt instruments it holds and dump them on the world market all at once. So much for free-range capitalism.

Lawnchair 2009-02-22 06:23:16 PM
China is, with US Treasuries, playing with fire.

Since the repudiation of Bretton Woods, I've always had in my mind that the US President has two buttons in that 'football' suitcase that follows him around. One launches the bombs. The other crashes the dollar.

We owe the Chinese a trillion 'dollars'. Whatever those are.

We could print a trillion dollar bill, blow our nose on it, and hand it over.

Mutually assured destruction. Just like the nuclear button.

Now, don't get me wrong. The second button is just as much an act of war as the first. China traded a generation of labor for 'dollars'. The Saudis traded their birthright God-given oil for 'dollars'. They won't be happy. But, hey, they took the deal.

When Obama announces a joint War on Porn with China, Hillary Clinton will look quite attractive.

The trip has to be considered a success because Billary didn't have to dodge any Chinese snipers. And at no time was a cigar used as a sex toy on any barely legal Chinese girls.
