The "Running of the Micks' is scheduled for March 7 in Atlantic City, but co-founder Matt McDermott tells The Press of Atlantic City he's changing the name of the event to the "Running of the Leprechauns.'

LOL

ne2d: Running of the Micks'

There's a 5k in my neighborhood on or around St. Patrick's Day. Everyone dresses up in silly clothes and runs around the town, and then all of the pubs have an hour of open bar for pretty much anyone who's still around.

it's always amusing to see the three or four people who are serious about times and stuff get annoyed at the people jumping in with a beer, or running around in full on leprechaun.

queenb4biatch [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 10:48:31 AM
If the runners are THAT serious about the times and racing for the UUSA Track and Field requirements, then here's an idea...run in a different race, or make a lane just for those idiots and let rest of us Proud Micks runs and drink...

There I said it, I'm a drunken Mick...and whoever gets offended can kiss my fat Irish American pasty white butt...

I just wish for ONCE that someone would stand up to those idiots and say " Fark off I am not changing the name for you." And how many of those people who complained are paying to run or participate in this race?

/stoopid people make me drink more...

Last year, my friend had some guy yell at her because her shamrock headband "distracted" him and he felt that if she didn't take running seriously, she shouldn't be in the race.

She pointed out that even hungover and wearing a shamrocks headset, she was still in front of him.
She's a tri-athlete.
And a drunk.

it's 5k. That's 3.2 miles. Not exactly the Boston Marathon.

This humorless, sober concept is foreign to me.

In 2 weeks is the anual st patricks day riot in my town. Its supposed to be a parade, but well, everyone just goes to the bar. A few years back the power that be got fed up with the whole town being drunk at noon, so decided to bump the parade to 2pm, figuring nobody would hit the bars until after it.

Everyone decided to just go to the bars earlier, and skip the parade alltogether. This led to bars being packed earlier and earlier. 2 years ago, every bar in town (about 50 of them) had lines to get in at 9am. Even the non irish ones.

I'm not sure what my point is, other than, I can't wait for 2 weekends from now.

LineNoise: In 2 weeks is the anual st patricks day riot in my town.

I'm morally opposed to the whole concept of using St. Patrick's Day as an excuse to get drunk.

It basically promotes the idea that people need a special occasion to drink too much. That's just shameful. EVERY day ought to be an occasion to drink too much. In fact, I'm going to have a few beers right now!

FreakinB 2009-02-22 12:52:33 PM
Damn me graduating college, getting a real job, and having St. Patrick's Day be during one of the busiest times of the year.

I went to school in NYC, and I now work in NYC. So I'll know what I'm missing and I'll know that I'm oh so close. Damn it all.

/Not Irish

bmb_789 2009-02-22 12:52:34 PM
I'm guessing that everyone that complained about the name was not actually Irish.

/Is it a stereotype if its true?

Shenanigans!

farkuufarkinfark 2009-02-22 12:53:13 PM
Meh. A few years back, Penn State decided that they were going to have spring break over St. Patrick's day to try to alleviate some of the problems the town has with students drinking on the holiday.

The students formed State Patty's Day, which is now a bigger drinking day than St. Patrick's Day.

Enterprising students. Now if they could put half that effort to their studies...

If you're offended by something as innocuous as this, then you must basically believe that you are actually inferior.

My mother's father was from Belfast, and drank his whiskey straight from the bottle. I consider ice to be mixer. Don't know why some stereotypes exist.

May I suggest Pursuit of Paddy or the Shanty Shuffle.

I here the Puerto Ricans have a very civilized event in Manhattan every June. Perhaps this could be an example to everyone how to behave

subby apparently there IS an Irishman out there without a sense of humor

Why yes, I don't have a sense of humor. But that has nothing to do with the irish heritage. It has everything to do with my work, and idiots at the bar like you subby.

/Now I want my whiskey.
//And something to hit.

Granted I'm not Irish, but I do like St. Patty's day for obvious reasons. With that said I thought St. Patrick's Day was a day where people partake in Irish cuisine and drink.

Now was it wrong for the Irish to make things like Guinness, Jameson, Smithwick's, and Baileys?(Hell no). But people shouldn't be pissed off that the Irish celebrate by drinking, it's just that some people celebrate a little, while others celebrate a whole lot.

Enjoy the culture, don't shun it.

It's February, and just like every year I smoke crack, go on welfare, have illegitimate children, commit home burglaries, listen to gansta rap, live in the ghetto, go to prison and blame it all on whitey keeping me down.
