If South America has an Iron Maiden or a Judas Priest, it's these guys. With a huge body of work to draw on it was hard to pick a song or album but I think this is a good choice.

If their breakthrough album "Chaos A.D" isn't in your Metal top ten, go get it and it will be.

BigSnatch [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 11:01:28 AM
While I love early Sepultura, "Chaos A.D." is their "Black Album". They used to offer an awesome blend of Thrash and Death metal, then "Chaos A.D." came out and all of that complexity was gone. They gave up on their old sound and steered themselves toward Hardcore (in addition to some Groove). This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when their earlier stuff was so awesome, it was a shame to see it all gone in favor of genres that they weren't all that good at.

"Beneath the Remains" is by far my favorite album by them, so I recommend that one.

Aye, another great choice. That middle period of theirs is the forgettable one.

Sepultura again huh? Cool by me.

cabritosaurio 2009-02-22 12:30:19 PM
Right band, wrong album/song I'm afraid.

Beneath the remains ftw!!!!

ps. Coincedentally, they released their newest video this week "We've lost you"

Kliffoth [TotalFark] 2009-02-22 12:39:11 PM
Wow that was not so good. I own 'Arise' but hadn't heard their other albums because I heard they...well...sound like this song.

Subby should have chosen 'Arise' for Sepultura.

Moderator should have chosen Opeth for SHMHC.

Gunny Highway: Sepultura again huh? Cool by me.

For some reason last week had about 14 submissions from 12:06 AM until the green at 8 or so. I went with these guys last week but the SHMHC got over run with bands.

cabritosaurio: Right band, wrong album/song I'm afraid.

Come on man, this album is great. I agree that BtR is epic but this is a great song to introduce people that might not have heard them. Sorta gives you a 101 course of them.

Just yesterday I was blogging about when I purchased "Chaos AD". Man, those were the days.

Couple of years later, they were doing songs with Jonathan Davis...

/Troops Of Doom!

Beneath the remains, as someone said earlier, my favorite as well.

Nothing wrong with Chaos AD, though. Good album. I enjoy the tribal-sort of drumming and guitar grooves.

That doesn't surprise me. This song sounds like Korn.

Roots is good, but it is an album that comes through better as a live show. The album is ok though. Everything else has been covered in the above posts.

More to come later!

I agree with most people here in that this song is not so good for Sepultura. But I don't think that Beneath the Remains is as good as people think it is. It would not even be in my top 25 thrash albums.

//The best Brazilian band is Krisiun.

If any other band had recorded "Roots" it would have been fine, in my opinion. But Sepultura released "BtR" and "Arise", "Roots" was definitely a few steps backwards for them. Casual fans, however, really love this album though. I guess it is catchy.

Or if you prefer power metal, than Hibria is the best band from Brazil.

I'm not sure what I like best:

is it the catchy lyrics?
is it the lead singer's voice?
is it the hooks?
is it the message?

Wait I got it: it's the tin can they hit on like a cowbell, that's it.

I love brutal death metal, but I just can't get into Krisiun. I don't know what it is. I do, however, like Rebaelliun, they like an even more brutal version of Krisiun some people say.

Kliffoth: Subby should have chosen 'Arise' for Sepultura.

A few weeks ago I listened to Arise for the first time in probably ten years. I don't think it's aged well at all--very monotonous and boring.

I like them to. I have been trying to get a hold of that album for sometime now. It is strange that you should like Rebaelliun, and not Krisiun, seeing as they're pretty similar. But if I had to choose a favorite brutal death band, it would probably be Immolation.

Oh, and Teddy, where were you last week? you were supposed to post the complete list of bands and songs that we've had on SHMHC.

You said, and I quote: "Want the complete list? It would take me a while but I can post 'em with next weeks if that's ok."

blueviking 2009-02-22 01:25:32 PM
Meh, I like Sepultura, not their stuff after Chaos A.D., but I would have chosen something like "Clenched Fist" or maybe "Subtraction".

Just MHO.

I agree with you. I haven't listened to it in ages because the last time I did I thought it was, as you said, monotonous and boring.

Of course nowadays I find straight Thrash monotonus and boring. Same with the brutal styles of Metal. Being loud for loud's sake or fast for fast's sake or brutal for brutal's sake is boring.

The reason why I suggested 'Arise' is that it's a better Sepultura song than this one.

Immolation, good times...good times...

I'm probably the biggest Cannibal Corpse fan alive. I've recently kinda stopped updating myself with music (having a son and lots of shiat to do and all). However, a couple of weeks ago I read an interview with Alex Webster where he recommends Hour of Penance, so I checked out some stuff, good shiat.

I vote that next week we should have some good ol' extreme metal in SHMH call.

I never understood why Arise was always mentioned above BtR for a long time: half of the album is very boring. BtR is full of catchy riffs and the energy never lets up. I have listened to for 15 years now and its STILL a great album. When I go got a jog, its the first album I reach for.

I'm just curious, but what kind of metal do you not find "boring"? Cause I probably think you've outgrown fast & loud stuff. I sometimes feel like that as well (also being a reason that I stopped bothering checking out new bands), but as soon as someone plays some good, fast, merciless thrash....it pumps me up.

And thats ok, but I have had many other metal friends who have heard both and still put Arise above BtR. I guess they'll come around eventually.

Here's what I listen to mostly

Agalloch - Folk Metal with Black Metal elements. (leaning heavy towards Folk. I love the Mandolin)

Amon Amarth - Melodic Death. Viking lyrical themes. They have their own particular sound but they never stray from it. Kinda like the AC/DC of Melodic Death.

Amorphis - Progressive Metal band that incorporate many different styles of music often in the same song (Metal, Progressive Rock, Folk, Clean Vocals, Death Vocals)

Blind Guardian - Medieval-esque Power/Thrash band. Lots of songs about Tolkein and movies/books (Blade Runner, Dune, Legend of King Arthur, etc)

Borknagar - Progressive Black Metal band with Folk elements and Black Metal/Clean Vocals.

Dark Tranquility - The pioneers of Melodic Death Metal. Awesome dual-lead counterpoint melodies.

Ensiferum - Melodic Death/Folk Metal band with Death and Clean vocals.

Fintroll - Folk/Black Metal.

Kalmah - Melodic Death/Thrash. Incredible drummer and guitarists.

Korpiklaani - Folk Metal. Awesome band, incorporate violin, pipes, accordian, and drums with Finnish legend and beer-inspired lyrics.

Nightwish - Operatic Symphonic Power Metal.

Opeth - Death/Black/Acoustic band with Death/Clean vocals. Epic Songs, lots of contrast, long flowing riffs.

Summoning - Symphonic Black Metal band. Take songs and poems (usually written by Tolkein) and set them to epic, atmospheric music. Very unique sound.

Symphony X - Progressive Power Metal.

Therion - (truly)Symphonic Death/Power/Thrash Metal band with Male and Female Opera singers, Clean and Death vocals. Often write about different mythologies and metaphysics.

Vintersorg - Progressive Folk/Black Metal band. One guy does everything but the drums. I prefer the Folkier stuff to his more trippy Progressive stuff.

Wintersun - Blend of Power/Black/Death/Thrash/Folk with Death/Clean vocals. Was originally a one man band with a session drummer. They have one album out (recorded when it was a one man band). Wide range of styles. Rediculously talented guitarist.

As you can see I like music that doesn't easily fit into genres. I like songs that have a lot of contrast. I've really tried getting into the more brutal stuff but I just can't. This isn't all the stuff I listen to but it'll give you a general idea of what I like.

From this, I would guess that you'd probably like Sear Bliss, who I posted about in last weeks thread. Atmospheric Black metal, they use a trumpets and french horns where most bands would have keyboards. Their second album, The Haunting, also incorporates guitar solos that could come out of a classic rock/blues song.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Let me guess, you watched the Rasputin video? :) Turisas can be a bit (OK, a lot) cheesy, but their music is epic. They're by far my favorite of the whole "viking metal" crowd. (If Rasputin was the one you watched, keep in mind that's a remake of a 70's disco song, and not very representative of their sound)

I would highly recommend To Holmgard and Beyond (new window) and A Portage to the Unknown (new window). BTW, those are both songs only, without any silly videos.

I'm still pushing for Rotting Christ. The name sounds pretty childish from an educated metalhead's standpoint, but an educated metalhead would know that they outgrew that a while ago and focused on making gothic metal with black metal overtones-but they haven't been a "trve" black metal band since the early 90's.

No problem. I always enjoy sharing my favorite bands. Another band I'd recommend would be Phlebotomized. Made two albums in the mid-nineties before splitting-up. The first album, Immense Intense Suspense, was old school death metal that used synths and violins to create an unique atmosphere. Their second album, Skycontact, is an unique avant-garde album, which sounds like nothing else I've heard.
