But after a three-month bender her KIDNEYS failed, part of her PANCREAS died, her LIVER is permanently scarred, and her SPLEEN may have to be removed.

Peak experiences come with a cost.

FTA: Katie, 23, got through FIVE PINTS of her favourite vodka and Red Bull mix, and necked at least FOUR COCKTAILS every day.

Tragic results from drinking Red Bull. Another tragedy could have been avoided had we banned that crap from the world.

Serious drinking is when you wake up in the hospital, and for almost a week you think they're messing with you by telling you it's 14 years later than you think.

/thought it was 1981...it was 1995. And that still didn't stop me from drinking for another year.

JESUS what is with you BRITS and your ANNOYING capitalization of random WORDS in your sentences? I mean IT reads as THOUGH you were randomly SHOUTING for no APPARENT reason.

If your populace is so ILLITERATE that you need to EMPHASIZE certain WORDS in your SENTENCES so people will READ THEM, then MAYBE you should stick to POP-UP BOOKS.

rabidferret 2009-02-22 06:05:54 AM
I'll just sit in this corner and wait for all the snobby Brits to come in and say they their enlightened lower minimum drinking age results in less binge drinking for college-age kids.

It's the "cuisine" of England that does it...I mean, if you had to eat that shiat you'd probably be a bit off, too.

Actually as a Brit I think we just don't give enough education to our kids about the effect of alcohol. From drinking around my parents on special occasions I quickly learnt what drinking can do.

These days kids think everything is fixable and most parents are too caught up in work or their "my time" to check on their kids and make sure they understand what drinking can do to them.

/Definately not a tee-totaller

Nuh-uh.

The forth month's a little rocky, coughing up blood and what not...so you've got to take a break...it's been smooth sailing from there.

I keed...but really...

Five pints of the hard stuff is pretty rough for that age, but you think Churchill wasn't drunk for a mere three months straight? Hemmingway? Bukowski? How much do you figure they put down.

You might choke it off around 60, but there's no way this Pollyanna in the article bites it at 23 with one more sip, unless she's got something else going on or she critically poisons herself. They're just trying to scare her straight.

Cheers, Katie... get your shiat in pocket.

Don't comic books do that, too? Maybe they used to. Whatever, it always bugged me because it seemed random and never seemed to tie into any way the sentence was supposed to be spoken.

Yeah...I'm calling bullshiat. Unless he has a corresponding theory to explain the calendars, periodicals, and advancments in technology he experienced. Plus, who would cancel the Jeffersons, Joanie Loves Chachi, AND the Dukes of Hazzard all while you were blacked out?

Sum Dum Gai 2009-02-22 06:39:15 AM
DrunkArse: Don't comic books do that, too? Maybe they used to.

Marvel and DC comics were in all caps, but they did often bold words for emphasis, usually to try to mimic stressed words, but sometimes it could indeed be pretty random.

THAT'S what it was...thanks.

As a kid, I tried so many times to figure out where they were going with that, I'd try to read it aloud emphasizing the bold words, but it never sounded right. It was just totally random. If they ever really wanted to emphasize something, they'd do an underline, or a BIGGER size, sometimes even incorporating an entirely new font.

Has anyone ever interviwed a Marvel/DC 'letterer', or I guess editor - since it seemed like a universal decision made across titles, and asked them what the system is that they use to decide which words go bold?

Things may have changed since I followed comics, but I don't remember it having any rhyme or reason at all.

DrunkArse 2009-02-22 07:19:10 AM
Like this...

Link (new window)

Some of the bold words are for emphasis, but if you read it like that is the rule, it really makes no sense. Some of the choices seem to underline plot points, but even that doesn't complete the equation.

I drink a bottle of 100 proof rum every night.. That's 750 ml. I feel great every day afterward. Have been doing this for about 5 years. Am I the exception?

For the record, the first time I ever got drunk I was 31 years old.

My liver hurts. To whine. Nothing some B-vits and Asprin won't cure. I still walk a few miles a day and drink a 12+.

/The puking up blood is only the body giving up weakness. I kid.

That's like 16oz of 100 proof rum per day?

I drink about 7oz per day of 80 proof rum, and consider myself an alcoholic.

16 oz of 100 proof per day would leave me perpetually feeling like hell.

7oz is a night cap or tall cocktail. That is healthy drinking in my opinion.

Well, I'm 280 pounds at 6' 1" with semi-athletic build. I go to the gym about 5 days a week and get some good cardio in as well. I also never wake up with a hangover as long as I get 8 hours of sleep. I'm not sure that I'd call myself an alcoholic since 2 months ago I was visiting my parents and didn't desire a drink for those two weeks. I only drink to make computer gaming more interesting.

It might.. This is why I'm going to stop drinking from Monday through Friday and maybe hit the bottle only on the weekends. I'm 43 now and feel like I did when I was 23. I guess the only way to keep it that way is to stop poisoning myself today.

Wow...

I'm pretty sure I drink too much, but I certainly can't compete with her.

The good news is I don't want to compete with her.

The bad news is that I may still end up there one day...

ph0rk 2009-02-22 08:52:06 AM
By US 1.25 oz shot standards, thats 33.8 drinks per day.

Damn. I thought I was overdoing it at 4 on Friday.
