Here's an idea - If self-styled advocacy groups had not already squandered their credibility with most rational folks, I might care about whatever you are championing this week.

Firing one cartoonist lest there be marches at the media's offices will fix the problems of racism in this country. Far more effectively than advocating that young African-Americans cease creating the statistics that cause everyone else to make inferences. I see what you're doing here, and I applaud this highly necessary step to eradicate all of the problems for the group you purport to represent...by having a high profile alarm fest an editor and cartoonist fired.

Stay Cool, Self-Styled Advocacy Groups

And thanks for putting the idea into a million heads

Also known as "NAACP demands more people pay attention to New York Post cartoonist." Nothing is quite so popular as controversy.

In other news, the NAACP says it's ok to call another president a chimp.

nekom [TotalFark] 2009-02-21 08:38:22 PM
That's nice. Since the NAACP has no relevancy whatsoever, they can go ahead and call for whatever they please, and I'll continue to ignore them.

As to that particular cartoon, it wasn't especially funny or insightful, but I honestly don't see it as racist, just an unfunny jab at the new administration and congress, etc.

Considering stock markets across the globe tanked the day the Stimulus was signed. I never saw race either...but oh well. Some people do.

Why hasn't the NAACP disbanded?

Think about it. Racial barriers have been shattered - a black man is President of the United States of America. The NAACP has reached their goal. So why are they keeping the doors open?

You like stirring shiat don't you?..:) We can ditch Affirmative Action, Black History Month, BET, the Black Caucus in Congress and anything race related. We've made History!!!

Pretty much this. Simple rule of thumb: If Al Sharpton's angry, then the topic's probably utterly irrelevant.

You know, it was funny if you just take race out of the issue. Pretend Bush was still in office. His intelligence was equivalent to that of a chimp.

Umokay 2009-02-22 05:32:13 AM
This, Mr. Holder, is why people don't talk about race in America. Calling someone racist today is the modern day witch trial.

Infinite Monkey Theorem (new window)

I am pretty sure this is what the artist was referring to. Nothing racial. But to a group that has the literacy rate of cockroaches, I wouldn't expect them to know this.

I sit here writing this as some monkey in my neighborhood has a god damn rooster going off at 5am. Can you believe that shiat? This is a residential neighborhood (North Lauderdale, FL), not rural farm land. I just happen to live in a 95% black neighborhood.

Why hasnt the NAACP disbanded? Because there's blacks and there's nubians. Obama shows that you can be black and do anything. Sharpton shows that you can biatch and sue your way into equality.

Tarison 2009-02-22 05:36:26 AM
Bah - the NAACP president is just Jealous.

Tirgoviste 2009-02-22 05:38:59 AM
I am in some ways the poster child for liberalism, affirmative action, gay adoption, welfare expansion, you name it, I support it. Might even be one of those closet socialists you all rail about. But fark the NAACP. We just spent 8 years calling George Bush a chimpanzee, we have the memes, pictures, photoshops, and quotes to prove it.

Your manufactured outrage is physically palpable, and it farking disguists me. A black man is the President of the United States and you treat a satirical cartoon as if it's a glaring gauge of national racism. What are you going to do? Advance a black man to a post higher than PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED farkING STATES OF AMERICA through your phony outrage? Absolutely ridiculous. There are real racial disparities in this country, and all you do via these demands is hurt your own cause. By the way, I hope him and the Danish muhammed cartoonist send you a Christmas card. Nothing sells papers like controversy.

You know, I'm sick and tired of the billion dollar litigation industry that the (your easily offended movement®, here) has become, but if you look at it, that's a pretty f*cked up cartoon, y'all.

Seriously.

I don't give a sh*t if he's chartreuse, that's the president they're caricaturing and there's a fine line between lampooning and smearing sh*t on a walll.

Swampthing in Korea 2009-02-22 05:40:59 AM
Okay, as far as I am concerned the NAACP is a reactionary organisation more concerned about manufacturing outrage rather than addressing the real causes of racial bigotry.

phartman 2009-02-22 05:43:20 AM
I'm not going to say I'm sorry, because I almost ruined my keyboard laughing at this. Anybody who's read the stim bill sees it for what it is - endless pork. Even a chimp couldn't have written anything so stupid. It has no connection to Obama except that his administration drafted it.
By the way, I saw the cartoon before i saw this thread and I thought the same as aszure (post 14) and his Infinite Monkey Theorem. Anything else is just a knee-jerk assumption by a known political opportunist. He probably asked Tawana Brawley first.

I read the cartoon and thought of the monkey that went nuts after contracting an illness and had to be shot by police just the other week.

It wasn't until the NAACP stepped in and suggested a racial overtone did I think of it as such.

Yay NAACP. You can't let racism die if you continue to feed it your braaaains.

Sharpton proved himself an idiot ever since he claimed black people were building empires and researching astrology while humans where still in the stone-age.

lord-humungus 2009-02-22 05:46:59 AM
I didn't know Obama personally wrote the stimulus bill... I thought the deranged chimps in congress did.

Of course it's all about what it was perceived to be... not what was intended. it would be a shame to fire someone for an overreaction.... especially in these economic times.... but then again in these economic times that are especially bad for newspapers, can the post afford to stand up for one cartoonist?

Looks like the post has a real tar baby on its hands here!

This isn't new. Do we live in a free society or do we not? It's more than a bit stupid to have a double standard as blatant as that.

After 8 years of G.W. Bush there have been plenty of harsher cartoons drawn about him; and yet I never felt offended because that was "the president they're caricaturing." Now that Obama's in office nothing's changed - being able to satirize or heavily lampoon an officeholder is an essential manifestation of free speech.

Either you're trolling, or Obama's your messiah so you think to target him with such things as free speech is heretical.

Yeah there might be some merit to saying that the cartoon is racist. (In fact, I think it *is* racist, but intentionally ambiguous enough that The Post can plausibly claim otherwise.) I can sympathize with that, but even if it's clearly racist it's still the guy's 1st Amendment right to print it.

However, the guy I quoted and was responding to claimed that this was unethical because "that's the president they're caricaturing..." The notion that someone should be insulated from criticism because they are an officeholder is the exact opposite of what should be the case in a democracy. Hence my "Obama messiah" comment (which I believe is the first time I've used the phrase, ever.)

Bullshiat. Acknowledge the cartoonist refers to the President and take race out of it? The cartoonist would be arrested for suggesting President Bush should be shot.

So double standards are an "opinion" now?

I don't know if you called BS when people posted the arguably offensive pictures of Bush. Maybe you did and the double standard thing doesn't apply.

Either way you slice it, this goes back to the whole free society thing - free to speak, free to make caricatures, free to voice your dissent, even free to be racist. Hell, you're even free to be offended. Just don't get upset when people call you a douchebag.

Sorry if this has been mentioned.

I remember hearing somebody arguing that MLK's goal, much like the NAACP's, won't be realized until it isn't a big deal that a black man is elected president. We've had so much celebration over electing an African American to office, which we wouldn't have had it been just another white guy.

So, I guess I can see the point. Although, I think the whole cartoon thing is ridiculous.

WOW, Obama wrote that Stimulus Bill all by himself?? As pointed out, BS. How about when the bill changed while working it through Congress? So if there are any problems with it or it just doesn't work, the Obama crowd will admit it is all Obama's fault? Yeah, I bet it will be put 100% on the Republicans somehow...then what? What inner "hidden" meaning will this cartoon then have?

/I thought the Democrats were the ones who supported all this free speech "crap". Racist my arse...
