If I had a time machine I'd go back to then and hit Susanna Hoffs so hard it'd generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity to get me back home.

Awww geez. So Susanna Hoffs is her name. Just did a search and found this (new window). I am so in love now.

Funny thing is that, according to them, they all hated the song even before it became a hit. They knew it was one of those songs a band gets labeled with and would likely never get past. The record label pushed it on them anyway.

So, yeah, I guess they were right.

Susanna Hoffs from last month. She just turned 50 too.

I see she's been doing stuff with Matthew Sweet from time to time. It's kind of funny to watch clips of them because he's all blown up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy but she still looks great.

Used to see Vicki Peterson play in the Continental Drifters -- that was a great little band.

Their acoustic version of "Different Drum" is really, really good. Link (new window)

Different Drum was written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. Ignore the ego issues, and Nesmith was likely responsible for country rock and MTV (music video version).

Their Greatest Hits is surprisingly listenable. They're what a pop band should be.

On topic, hasn't at least one of them posed for Playboy? Or am I getting them mixed up with the Go-Gos?

I LOVED The Bangles growing up. Kick ass chick rockers!!! "All Over the Place" was my favorite album of theirs.

Great clip of them on Letterman circa 1984 (Hero Takes A Fall): Link (new window)

Um, I think I love YOU. A Mike "Wool Hat" Nesmith fact in a Bangles thread. Swoon...

My old neighbors used to cover this when you gave them enough booze.

Destroyed a song that was just awful to begin with.

SharkTrager 2009-02-21 06:49:13 PM
OK, they're hot, but how pathetic do you have to be to be in that band and be the one who is basically only allowed to play the tambourine and whistle? They just need a token blond or something?

Mike Nesmith was responsible for country rock? Are you farking kidding? I like Mike Nesmith, but that statement is just ignorant of history and I seriously doubt that he would agree with you.

See what I mean about Matthew? He looks like he just got through cleaning someone's swimming pool. Sounds good, though.

On the subject of Nesmith, Vicki used to sing Some Of Shelley's Blues in the Continental Drifters. I like her voice -- not so precious the way Susanna Hoffs' is. Her voice (VP's that is) worked well singing with Susan Cowsill in that band, and sometimes the two of them would do duo gigs as the Psycho Sisters.

I lol'd at that. He does look like Meatloaf coming off the set of "Roadie", but yeah, it's hard to argue with the results...

Worst band evar musically. Hottest band evar sexually. The cognitive dissonance is tearing me apart, man.

/I saw 'em live at their peak. Holy Christ, they were awful. Yet, I couldn't take my eyes off 'em. I needed a Dan Ackroyd drool cup.

http://www.pandora.com/music/artist/michael+nesmith
"his dozen (or so) '70s LPs were among the most groundbreaking country-rock recordings of the era."

http://hbplmusic.blogspot.com/2009/01/michael-nesmith.html
"An often overlooked contributor to this movement was Michael Nesmith who, as early as 1970, was recording original country music with a rock sensibility."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Nesmith
"Nesmith has been considered one of the pioneers of country-rock (along with Gram Parsons) and had moderate commercial success with the First National Band."

http://clippernolan.wordpress.com/2008/08/30/former-monkees-guitarist-michael-n e smith-performs-joanne/
"Here's a clip of former pre-fab four guitarist and country-rock pioneer Michael Nesmith performing his 1970 solo tune 'Joanne' as taken from his critically-acclaimed, if not world-renowned Magnetic South album."

and there are a few more that I won't trouble you with.
