A plant watchman and "jack-of-all-trades" at A-Z Industries Inc., of Northbrook, Ill., Fabian commutes to the job in his Buick LeSabre every day from his home in Niles, Ill., despite getting ready to celebrate his 100th birthday next month, The Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

There's plenty of those in Mexico, but not that old.

Good to see that guy's still not thinking about the afterlife.

Note to self, stay clear of farmer's market and country kitchen buffet.

According to U.S. census bureau, 19 and under are more likely to be involved in an in a car accident than 75 and older. And much more likely to be in accident involving passenger death.

Just so you know....

But which age group is more likely to plow through a crowd of innocent purchasers of organic fruits and vegetables, killing more than a dozen and walking away with no jail time?

Hmmmm, that doesn't seem to be one of the questions on the form.

(I suspect that 75 year olds compiled the questionaire. :-P)

My grandfather was nothing short of a hero in my eyes. When he was 80 years old he blew through a red light and fortunately no accidents were caused. When we got to our destination I told him I would never be in a car with him again if he was driving. And I offered to drive him anywhere he needed to go. As one of those old-school man's man with a ton of pride - he simply nodded his head once and gave me the keys. I'm glad it was that easy with him. As far as I know - he never drove again for the rest of his life.

If you have a 90 mile commute, you are killing the planet even IF you drive a Prius.

May I have such wisdom and acceptance in the year 2071. (and still be alive.)

My mom is 73 and drives herself. She can't drive for shiat, but only goes 15mph, so it's pretty harmless, even for pedestrians. They just step out of her way on the sidewalk and look at her funny.

My grandmother had to be told many times by her children. For my grandfather, we had to write a letter to the state asking them to review his driving skills. He failed.

His talk about loyalty makes me wonder how loyal his employers are to him. If they really deserve such loyalty they probably would have paid the guy enough to stop working somewhere along the line. Maybe he's doing it voluntarily to keep himself going or something though.

I suppose they haven't replaced him with an illegal yet, so I guess he has that going for him.

The 90 miles is from getting lost and wandering around.

My father stopped driving at 82 when he was backing out of a space and slid his right fender down the side of the car parked next to him. I was finally able to convince him to see an eye doctor. Turned out he had untreated glaucoma.

Two weird stories about that first trip to the eye doctor:

1) The eye doctor - my father's selection - had the same exact name as my friend, who happens to be blind. No relation.

2) The doctor's office was in an old house. As we sitting in the waiting room my father blurted out, "I used to come to this house when I was a little boy." Then he shut up. As he'd already had a few minor incidents of senile dementia and he grew up 50 miles from the house I chalked it off to incipient craziness. Later, on a hunch, I called his sister and asked her about it. Seems when they were kids their uncle owned that house and they used to take the train up from the city to visit him. A woo moment.

I expected a similar fight with my grandparents. I am glad it didn't go that way. G-ma (who turned 90 last year) simply sold off the cars when she no longer felt comfortable driving. It was unexpected surprise to watch two head-strong people step back in the face of common sense.

Maybe it's the jaunty angle he's got himself propped on that pallet, but it looks to me like he is about to break into song and dance.

Maybe do a little tapdance around the warehouse, some crazy Gene Kelly moves vaulting off those giant wire spools, a little walking up the walls and dancing on the ceiling while perusing his clipboard, etc.

He could do it if anyone could.

This guy, at his rather advanced age, still seems to have a zest for life. Not old, bitter, cranky, grouchy. Very cool. And, a loyalty to his employer, something else which also seems kinda rare in these times.

/don't tell him to stop, cuz he's not ready to slow down!
