when you look at great apes up close and look into their eyes, you really can just a little of the "spark" that makes us human. Short of FTL travel, of all the sci-fi concepts I've read, I'd love "Uplift" ability the most. The planet's kinda lonely with only 1 intelligent species

When I whistle toons at work people gape in awe and make say things like "You should go on American Idol".

It's quite sad.

I simply came here to say that I'm nursing a huge drunk-over from work.

This will not be the last time I do this today.

I cannot feel my nose.

Say no to absinthe.

The planet's kinda lonely with only 1 intelligent species.

That predisposes that man is the only truly intelligent species, which I am not so sure of. Many species, like dolphins, elephants, and some cephalopods, have excellent intelligence and problem solving abilities. If not for tools (including a rich spoken and written language) and the ability to use tech, we would still be swinging in the trees. I've seen (imagined?) that spark you speak of in a few dogs eyes, and not seen in in a few humans.

Hands. Is there anything they can't do?

It's a shame that the experiment had to be dumbed down to accommodate the fact that the researcher can't whistle herself. The orangutan appears to be the more highly evolved of the two...

/orangutan pronounced orangutang
//on purpose

You know the one good thing about Chimpanzees is they give face transplant surgeons a canvas on which to perform their work.

The higher order primates have well developed dexterity, and they do use rudimentary tools for hunting, gathering, fanning themselves or whatever else pleases them..

I was reading the other day that humans have a slight mutation in a gene associated with linguistic processing, compared to other intelligent primates. It allows for a more complex language to be developed and understood, thus allowing us to pass down advanced concepts to future generations.

I'm sure there are other important changes, but I bet thats a big one. We can pass down large amounts of complex knowledge to be built on by the next generation, while other primates don't get as far.

I thought that was sort of funny myself. And I don't really see why this is such a breakthrough in animal communications. We already know that apes imitate all sorts of human activities.

"So what's significant about Bonnie learning to whistle is not that she's able to do it, it's that she saw someone else do it and just picked it up," Stromberg says.

??? Anyway, i might have a picture of this ape.

If that's not her, that's a friend of hers. This one kept coming up to the window and pressing her hand against the glass so that people could "high five" her/him. Too bad it's such a crappy pic--I couldn't get any good ones through the glass.

So which one intelligent species are you referring to? I wasn't aware that any intelligent life had been discovered on this planet yet.
