I guess diversity's not always a good thing, hmm?

I didn't realize people in Seattle actually cared about rap.

/lives here
//listens to rap, doesn't care about it much
///There are so many other live shows to watch that don't involve some dudes yelling in a microphone.

I've listened to a few wescoast asian battle rappers who are killin it right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-HQVvtOpRs
Most black rappers rely waay to much on the word nubian, tell the same expected stories and punchlines, talk about how much 'swag' they have, and people are just tired of it. Keep in mind I said most, not all.

Rap is anti-MAN.

It's ObamaTime, the MAN is black.

Race pimps! Equality is all good when it's minorities breaking down the barriers but when it's the other way around some idiot cries foul. I like hip hop, but as a white southerner I felt left out til Bubba Sparxxx dropped. The Beastie Boys where dope and Eminem has skills, but what else was there for me? Vanilla Ice? At least there's Dan LeSac and Just Jack. Guns, biatches, and bling were never part of the four elements!

How come nobody's biatchin about the overwhealming white influence in bluegrass?

That is all.

Hmm, could it be that artists like Common Market are getting attention because they rap about something other than women and cars? What's the word I'm looking for? Refreshing? New?

Not trying to be a dick, but Common Market and Blue Scholars are mostly aimed at suburban Seattle white kids.

It had to be said.

I'm not from Seattle and they are my two favourite hip hop groups (well, they are basically one giant family, so who gives a damn really). Plus, outside of Cancer Rising, there is no decent African American created hip hop in the north west, IMO.

Really, I find most preachy "socially conscious" style rap to be just as hard to listen to as the "biatches and riches" style of rap.
I'd rather rappers rap about themselves, not about me (and the rest of the world) and how I don't "act up." If you wanted to write sappy guilt trips, then you should have gone into folk music.

Wait, there are black people in Seattle?

I'm kidding (sort of), but when they're a very small percentage of the population, why do they expect to dominate a musical genre? If you're a rapper in Seattle, most of your fans will be white, and white kids generally have far less interest in the egomaniacal bravado that a majority of black rappers have been writing about for, well, just about ever.

Heist 2009-02-21 08:43:05 AM
In addition, I think it's absurd that white kids prefer to hear stories of social struggles when they, as white kids, never really experienced them, but that's a whole 'nother issue.

Makes sense to me. Boats 'n Hoes was the best rap song I have heard in a while.

pretty much this. There's probably more Indian and Asians than there are black people out here. Either way, the idea that music belongs to any one race/ethnicity is absurd.

Flobots...and they weren't talking about taking the handlebars off their bike, they're talking about riding with no hands on their handlebars.

Those are all underground groups. I actually know the #1 mainstream rapper in Seattle. He's Persian and he's (gasp) actually pretty good.

Make good music or go home. No one cares what you look like if you make music that is enjoyable to listen to.

I mean, I know it is. I just can't believe that's real.

White rappers that aren't Jewish shouldn't even bother.
