Nagin is being unfairly lumped in with other corrupt politicians who happen to be black, and D. He's only useless. Corruption, at least the sort that causes a double-take in this day and age, is not one of his most commonly cited issues.

I voted for that assclown in 2002. You'll find a great number of otherwise rational, intelligent New Orleanians (non-sequitor lulz) who did the same, obviously. Unfortunately, we all know what happened. And the second round? That was just the phenomenon known as "voting with blinders on" rearing it's ugly head. Because what we needed at that exact moment of national scrutiny, was one more reason to be embarrassed. In an instant, I gained a new empathy for people all over DC and Detroit as I joined the WTF brigade.

Then we drank until 11 AM on Thursday.

New Orleans is the exception in Louisiana. Also they are still doing fairly well.

Apparently Louisiana has the second highest poverty rate in the nation. Piyush must be trying to get up to number one. He's a pretty typical example of the modern Republican brand of not only failing, but failing spectacularly.

That's not entirely fair. Louisiana has long legacy of screwing itself. Once the jewel of the South and arguably the most important region outside of NY, La. (and New Orleans in particular) has slowly but quite surely slipped year after year. There a a gazillion factors and none of them were Jindal's invention.

What you imply is as stupid as the Freepers looking for any statistic to blame on a man who has been in office for a month.

I never said it was Piyush's fault that Louisiana is impoverished. I was making note of the fact that even though Louisiana is nearly the most impoverished state in the nation Piyush is willing to run it completely into the ground just to try to make Obama look bad. This stimulus is exactly what Louisiana needs.

I realized my error as soon I posted it - was hoping no one else would. Still, I am curious as to how you would define "fairly well?"

Actually he is helping the businesses where the people work. If he has to raise state taxes in order to accept this federal money that hurts local businesses. If local businesses have to pay more taxes they can't hire the people who are on unemployment. The sooner the businesses get back on solid ground, the faster the unemployed get jobs.

The stimulus bill is a fixed amount. By all means, let more governors/mayors reject it. More for the rest of us.

It's done, it's passed, and it's too late to biatch about it. Might as well take what you can while you have the chance.

That makes sense for California, since Arnold Schwarzenegger is the governor (Governor + Terminator), but why would you use it for Jindal?

Are all American states being lead by robots from the future? Or is it just mine?

I'm heartened that at least every other day, Louisiana makes Mississippi look good. Mississippi is just an impoverished and ignorant shiathole. Louisiana has potential to be one of the most important states in the country and is still an impoverished and ignorant shiathole.

Fart_Machine 2009-02-21 02:10:48 AM
Ah well, the people of Louisiana elected the guy so he must be doing it for them. I mean if this was just to grandstand for a potential Presidential bid in 2012 the man would have no scruples whatsoever.

Lotta "ifs" there. And I was unaware that the states had to raise taxes on all businesses to accept bailout money.

Yep! Also, the bill has small print that says any state that accepts the bailout money is automatically part of the Ultra USSR II Turbo Gold that Obama is secretly creating.

Yep! To illegal Mexicans. And the ceremonies are all to be presided over by Keith Olbermann, who will be made Pope of Liberaltania.

Gailin [TotalFark] 2009-02-21 02:20:14 AM
It was a political stunt pure and simple. The stimulus package is specifically designed so that the state legislature can overrule the governor and take the money. That is exactly what will happen in Louisiana. He could say no without any repercussions knowing there was no way his state would miss their turn at the trough.

I am what Jindal claims to be: a fiscal conservative. His decision to reject the funds is baffling because the money for the bailout is going to come partly from taxes paid by his constituents. Even if he believes the bailout to be misguided, the fact is that it is going to take place. Rejecting Louisiana's portion accomplishes nothing but ensuring that Louisianians get nothing in exchange for their share of the burden.

Unless the stimulus works.

If it works, Jindal's opponent can say that he opposed the measure that ended the recession, rendering him unfit for office.

But if things go badly he's even more of the best decision for the GOP to run for 2012. If they pick anyone else they are insane. This just cements it if things aren't peachy keen in 2011

This part of TFA really pisses me off:

"The federal money in this bill will run out in less than three years for this benefit and our businesses would then be stuck paying the bill," Jindal said. "We must be careful and thoughtful as we examine all the strings attached to the funding in this package. We cannot grow government in an unsustainable way."

Hopefully we won't need unemployment expansion and extensions in three years; that's when you would phase the program out of existence.

What an idiot. If I were unemployed in Louisiana I'd be irate.

Tanqueray 2009-02-21 02:31:42 AM
There's a flaw in his logic. While he's right in theory that companies will be forced to pick up the tab in three years, what he fails to account for is that the 2012 apocalypse will render it a moot point.

Maudite 2009-02-21 02:31:45 AM
It's a bold move calculated to help him in the 2012 election assuming the economy doesn't turn around. I hope it bites him in the ass.
