No, no, no. You got that wrong. You're not supposed to feed them after midnight, or get them wet.

They detuned all of their instruments, set them on the monitors, and walked off the stage for an encore in 2002.

Honestly, a noise ordinance may not be such a bad idea for them.

/great concert

I've seen them twice. Trust me, meandering zombie rock doesn't sound any different when it's louder.

Dammit Mogwai! Why no DC this year? I don't want to go to Philly!

The thing about Mogwai (or really any loud event) is you use those really good types of earplugs, the ones that still let the highs through, and you're golden.

And screw TFA claiming The Hawk Is Howling was "middling". It's not their best, but it's close. It was in my car stereo for about 2 weeks straight.

Saw them back around 2002. Probably the best show I've ever seen. Definitely the loudest.

Necrosis 2009-02-20 05:29:10 PM
I saw them in Portland, OR on their last tour, they put on a great show, though it wasn't nearly as loud as I was expecting. Fantastic lighting too, I read somewhere it was their first tour where they had a dedicated lighting crew/gear traveling with them, and they put it to good use.

I'd say The Hawk is Howling is an average album for them, nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't stand out compared to some of their other work.

Wow I hate Mogwai

Loud =/= Good

I worked in the live music industry for awhile, and there is definitely a level where a concert moves from loud and great to just loud.

It's like buffalo wings.....some are hot and tasty, and some just blow your eardrums out.

The Drunk IT Guy [TotalFark] 2009-02-20 06:02:09 PM
YES YES YES They're coming to Houston!! O GOD YES!!

I've heard for years that their concerts are an assault to the eardrums, so I'll be getting some of those special plugs. Hope they have them at Guitar Center.

That's nice. Thanks for sharing.

So, anybody have tips on which high-end earplugs are the best?
I've been itching to buy a pair. Because Mono is touring as well, and hopefully will post some more dates soon. And as loud as Mogwai is, when Mono gets loud, it's like a primal force of nature.

/Still looking forward to the 'Gwai
/those rumors about them retiring 'Mogwai Fear Satan' better be untrue

They were involved in The Fountain soundtrack, therefore whatever they want to do, I say let them.

Loud is overrated.

Oh snap, they're playing in Buffalo the day of my last final, in the same place I saw Pelican this past fall.

Saw them in chicago back on the come on die young tour (i think) definitely the loudest show I'd ever been too...

Until I saw My Bloody Valentine this last year... that was like standing next to the space shuttle taking off.. or a planet forming.. or standing inside a volcano

The aforementioned earplugs that I use aren't expensive at all, they're just "EarPlanes".

supine 2009-02-20 09:15:20 PM
Best high-end earplugs I ever used= tear a cocktail napkin in half, shove one half in ear, repeat.

Seen mogwai 3 or 4 times. Loudest show I was ever at... The Ottobar in Baltimore in 1999? 2000? Something like that...

FeedTheCollapse 2009-02-20 11:44:13 PM
meh, I'm mad that they're not coming to Seattle. I almost saw them this past summer, but didn't sounds like they had some soundquality issue.

At Guitar Center they sell hearing protection specially designed for musicians. I think they are called "Hear-Os" (hearos)

Do NOT use ear plugs for shooters/hunters. Those will only protect from a gun shot which is a sudden high volume spike with no sustain. Loud music has different characteristics.

Trust me.
I am a bass player in a heavy-rock band.
We wear ear plugs and we ask our fans to wear them at our shows.

Almost picked up some Mogwai yesterday as I do not yet own any.
Any expert opinions on the best TWO Mogwai recordings?

Young Team
, and Come on Die Young

MikoSquiz 2009-02-21 08:00:17 PM
Meh. Everything sounds like shiat once you turn it up loud enough, and really heavy thunderous bass makes me nausous and gives me heart palpitations.

Those who can, play music. Those who can't, turn it up so loud you can't tell.

/I quite like Mogwai though, but I think I'll be sticking to the recordings

Gah, why aren't The Twilight Sad coming with them to Los Angeles...

Young Team and their most recent one The Hawk is Howling is good. Young Team is probably the only one absolutely necessary as their albums aren't really that different from one another. Young Team is worth it for Like Herod alone.

There is a reason why guitarists/bassists "crank it" and it is NOT because of volume. Guitar and bass amps have a break-up or overdrive effect at high volumes. You can not get this effect at low volumes. If you ever look at the face of an amplifier you will notice that most don't even have a "volume" knob for overall loudness. They have a "pre" gain and a "post" gain. Guitarists and bassists will turn the pre all the way up in order to overdrive the preamp in the amplifier.

This creates a warm and fuzzy effect for the instrument. This sound is profound especially in tube-amps. (amps with valves)

So,they are NOT compensating for lack of talent as you suggest.

It is a sonic effect that they are achieving.

Mogwai shot my hearing three or four times. And that was with the 33 dB-rated plugs from Sam Ash.

/can't mosh to it. goes too slow.
