This might actually work ... I mean it took Nixon to go to China, maybe it takes a card carrying liberal to encourage fiscal responsibility ....

what_now [TotalFark] 2009-02-20 11:23:31 AM
The president did not specify how, exactly, he would call out one of his administration's own agencies or a local government.

Hold a presser, show a picture of Mayor McCheese and tell the nation he spent $145,250 on refurbishing the bathroom of city hall, and promise to campaign for whoever challenges this mayor in the next election.

Oversight, shmoversite...just threaten to publicly out ridiculous spending (and actually follow through) and they'll step into line, if they want to be reelected.

You have a curious habit of answering with "heh." It doesn't really say anything, you know. I tend to interpret it as "I have no actual response so here's a smug grunt."

Why's that? Is the historical trend of incumbents being reelected at pretty high rates about to change? On what do you base this prediction?

Right. The stock market and the economy were just humming right along until January 20th. I forgot that particular aspect of the current revisionism.

And you didn't really answer my question, but I have a feeling what_now is correct. I also have a feeling you've been counting on a revolution for years if not decades. Guess what? Not gonna happen.

46% contraction since 07. Real nose dive Sept 08. The "private investor capital" and the "evil evil rich people" are one in the same. They are leaving with thier money because they have been made targets. What about that can't you understand? Obama himself is begging for "private investor capital".

By and large, nobody is going to do that as long as the same people, with the same finger prints, are still handling the money..get it?

ZERO Confidence.

I think the "heh" translates to "This was McCain's entire platform when he declared 'I have fought the big spenders in both parties who waste your money on both things you may not need or want....I will make them famous, and you will know their names! You will know their names!' but now that Obama might do it, it is a terrible idea."

Senator Mumbles? We already have a Representative Mumbles in Frank.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2009-02-20 12:38:14 PM
GaryPDX: What about that can't you understand?

Who says I don't understand? I was criticizing those who are downplaying the crisis' origins under Bush and putting it all on Obama. I shouldn't have directed that statement at you - I should have made it clearer that it was a general observance, so I apologize for that, but there is a HUGE effort going on to somehow put the entire mess on Obama and the Dems.

So far it's not working. Polls show Obama holding steady, even trending upward, along with Congressional Dems, with Republicans sinking (further).

Anyway, I understand what's going on, and I understand the GOP's tactics - so does everyone else, and they're not buying it.

There's no confidence..the market is operating on pure fear right now. Who in their right mind would invest in something that might get nationalized?

It happens like this..

Husband: Honey, I love Obama and all but let's sit on our money for a while and see how things go.
Wife: Okay Dear, BTW, isn't Obama dreamy?

That's how it happens..it's self protection. These are basic emotions and these clowns just scared the crap out of everyone.

Once again: Massachusettes has special elections when there is an open senate or house seat. The Gov is NOT allowed to just blagojevich someone in.

No one is voting for Mumbles to be senator.

It'll be Mumbles vs. a GOP candidate that the GOP once again forgets to bother vetting.

There is no such thing as a Democratic primary in Massachusetts. It's hammered out already. There will be a Democratic candidate and that candidate will be the Senator. For heaven's sake they just voted in a guy with a malignant brain tumor. Can you *name* the GOP opponent?

what_now [TotalFark] 2009-02-20 12:55:13 PM
DarthBrooks: There is no such thing as a Democratic primary in Massachusetts.

The last time we needed a special election, Niki Tsongas beat out...3 or 4 primary challengers. We haven't had a democratic primary in Mass for a senate race in a long time, because no one wanted to go against Kennedy or Kerry. In 2004, there was PLENTY of speculation over who would fill "president" Kerry's seat.

DarthBrooks: For heaven's sake they just voted in a guy with a malignant brain tumor.

Ted Kennedy was re-elected in 2006. His tumor was found in 2008.

DarthBrooks: Can you *name* the GOP opponent?

I'll admit, I had to look that up. His name was Kenneth Chase and a quick check of him (new window)"on the issues" shows that he really....doesn't have many opinions.

There hasn't been a chance for a real senate election in twenty years. No one is talking about it outloud, because Teddy is still alive and that's a little unseemly, but there are plenty of Democratic players lining up for a primary fight.

But yes, whoever wins the Democratic primary will be the next senator from Massachusetts.

The market is down -176 after Obama talks to the Mayors. Below 7300 and tanking. Gold has broken 1000. This is getting real.
