Take the only tree that's left

in your culture

Possibly the greatest lyrics in song history.

I've seen him in Montreal last summer. Front row seats. Greatest (and priciest) show I've ever seen.

As a resident of Boogie Street, I approve of this thread.

Cohen's earlier work is some of the most consummate songwriting EVAH, but I have a major addiction to the sparse, stark, Casiotone awesomeness of Ten New Songs, et al. And no Cohen thread is complete without mentioning Buckley's soaring version of "Hallelujah." And since I brought up covers, check out Tower of Song. It's a tribute piece with one or two turds on it (Don Henley should not be allowed to touch...anything), but it's a cool album nonetheless. Now, if only there were some way to get albums mentioned in threads without actually going to a store. Pfft. That'll be the day...

I saw him, when he was in Denmark last summer, and can only say THIS. Both the "greatest" part, and "priciest" part.

Twice in Belgium. The first time disappointed enormously because of the venue. Leonard may have been good but I could neither see nor hear him so I can't comment but made certain I was well-positioned for the second and it was magic. Remarkable, perhaps, for how uncannily like the albums every single song was but really, this was his goodbye tour, I wasn't looking for innovation.
For me it was only the second greatest concert I've ever seen. The first was fifteen years ago, in Toronto, and it was the first time I saw Leonard Cohen live.

Great song writer. Godawful singer.

As I've said before, I saw him back in the mid 70s (and yeah
where the fark has the time gone?) and it was an all time
Top 5 show and for my era I've seen just about everyone, he was that good.

Yeah, why doesn't he us autotune or something cool like all my favorite pop stars?

I pre-ordered his upcoming LIVE DVD from Amazon a few days ago. Can't wait to get it!

Speaking of Tower Of Song, The Jesus and Mary Chain do an amazingly awesome cover of that particular song.

apeiron242 and shadowself, WTF? I love Leonard's voice, both the early stuff in his higher register and the later bass stuff.

But then I also think Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs are all excellent singers. I'd rather hear the scratchy mewl of a raw human soul than a processed loaf of whatever that is they're selling on the radio these days.

Then he'll take singing lessons?

I have tons of respect for Cohen! However, I consider him a vocalist, not a singer.

Wow - I was thinking of getting two tickets to the Austin, TX show, but I think I'll keep my thousand bucks.

/I'll buy the dvd

The tickets for Austin haven't even gone on sale yet. You're looking at scalper prices.

You can get fanclub pre-sale tickets through his forums.

I saw him in Helsinki. Wonderful show. Three hours plus. Definitely worth the $100. He's remarkably spry for such an old guy, too.

And I must say, his singing is now better than ever.
