U2 sucks!

Ah, crap. I forgot to add the profound hipster douchebaggery. Guess I'll have to wait 12 hours for the next U2 thread to get it right.

/doesn't like U2, but it is amusing to see everyone get so worked up over them and That Other Band that does not get green-lit nearly enough.

Well, I went ahead and, erm, found samples of it. I had to b/c U2 was capable of releasing some really great stuff (Achtung). Maybe it's just because it's the first listen but...meh. Then again, I only expected a 'meh.'

my theory on the people hating u2, is that they used to LOVE u2 but resent they are not u2 circa Under a blood red sky. What they are is a band that can still push out a good song or two per album, which is packed with fillers, but those good songs are enough to keep them in the spotlight.

SO here they are, throughout the years, taunting their old fans. Because its not Bono waving a white flag at Red rocks anymore. Its Bono waving his big glasses, fat, bloated and a millionaire. It ruins the Red Rocks thing

Yeah, that's pretty much my impression of the...samples. Then again, I'm not filthy rich and sleeping on a bed made entirely of live 16 y/o Philippine girls, like I assume Bono is/does. So that pretty much trumps what I think, lulz

Not likely. Then again, hating a band takes a lot of effort and makes no sense. Just turn the radio channel. Or turn to MTV where you won't have to worry about hearing music ever.

Well, I'm not a big fan and I do think they're overrated, but I wouldn't say they suck even if Bono let fame go to his head a couple of decades ago and can't get over himself.

The week before Dylan's autobiography came out, I saw it at Sam's Club and tried to buy it. The cashier got all confused because it wasn't in the system and finally figured out that it wasn't supposed to go on sale until the following week. It was pretty stupid since it was an (attempted) impulse buy on my part and I ended up not buying it for another 6 months and I didn't get it at Sam's.

What is it with these release dates anyway? If a product is ready and shipped, why not just let them sell it?

I guess it's to boost first-week sales or something so that the product shows up higher in top-10 (40, 100, whatever) lists and also adds to the hype.

I currently work in the protein industry (or dead-animal industry if you prefer) and I can't imagine announcing that you can't buy a Certified Angus Beef ribeye until a certain date.

I didnt like GOYB the first few times I heard it. After watching the video I cant get it out of my head. I like the song now.

I have heard the 30 second clips from the album.

Its their best album since Acthung Baby. Very creative and experimental.

Love the first Song, no line on the horizon.

It's also so all retailers have it at the same time, otherwise it's unfair that one can start selling it before the others, just because the courier went past their shop first.

Break an embargo = not get anything on release day ever again. This website will probably never get anything from Universal (I think) on time again.

Try using an IP blocker like PeerGuardian. It's not at all bulletproof, but it is an added element of protection. As a general rule, music is very safe (most of the C&D letters are coming about movies, these days). But with the U2 release being such a big deal AND their manager being an outspoken critic of file sharing, I'd be wary of using anyone but a private tracker. Private trackers, much like the PeerGuardian I mentioned, are not intended to provide secure solutions; they just lessen the already extremely slim possibility that you'd get caught DLing music.

None of this matters because usenet is the real mutha.

Yeah - because music and book publishers are all about fairness.

No fair that Walmart has better distribution than Joe's Book Shop - we're going to sacrifice immediate sales so Joe's can compete.

I'd still rather buy it at Joe's and probably would, or like I told the minimum wage clerk at PetSmart the other day after seeing that my cat's food went up a couple bucks I'm going to buy it online.

Hey, a couple bucks is a couple bucks - which ain't much and will be even less once Obama has his way

King Something [TotalFark] 2009-02-20 04:56:10 AM
As stated earlier in the thread, even Lars doesn't get the slightest bit butthurt or litigous over this sort of thing anymore - and he's the guy who created the "rock musician getting overly butthurt and litigous because of fans downloading his music for free instead of paying money for it" meme.

Also, the most important reason is to prevent leaks, which tends to have a detrimental effect on sales. Especially if the album most likely sucks and relies on the fame of the band for sales, in which case some people might not want to buy it after hearing it. Applies to U2.

Maybe that's how it is in the US, but where I am, embargoes are to stop retailers getting in ahead of others - if one sells out, then goes to another and it's not on sale, it looks bad mud_shark: danduran: It's also so all retailers have it at the same time, otherwise it's unfair that one can start selling it before the others, just because the courier went past their shop first.

I'm not in the US, so it may be different here. But that was the golden rule where I worked - never break an embargo, or you'd never get anything in advance again, meaning you'd not be able to organise your release day promotion.

Not that that really mattered, since the best selling albums by far were the slow burners that lasted all year.

There is one song you should look into. "Magnificence." I gotta say, it reeks of U2's relevant days. Not bad. Not bad at all. It's as though every building block was deliberately placed. A throbbing rhythm section, circa 1984 jangling guitar, etc. Barring some production values, it's straight from Unforgettable Fire.

Stay Cool Babylon 2009-02-20 12:18:14 PM
To those of you who are fans - even the versions of the songs that claim to be @320k are somewhat lacking in quality. So is some of the songwriting. But if you are a big U2 fan, I suggest waiting for the physical CD. What's in the wild is good for evaluating only, even though it supposedly came from the record company's own outlet. The iTuning of the world continues! How sad is it that you have to STEAL it to get a good digital copy? Idiots.

/did not like this album yesterday

solcofn: I dig old U2. Everything since Achtung Baby has been down hill. I really can't stand the new single.

I have been hearing that U2 has been going downhill ever since Unforgettable Fire came out. When Unforgettable Fire come out- "what crap U2 sucks now" Joshua Tree Came out, "what crap U2 sucks now" - Acthung baby first was released - "what crap U2 sucks now"-

After Acthung Baby I can name a few songs right off the top of my head that are just as good if not better than anything they had done before.
1. Zooropa (the song) - awesome post apocolyptic nuclear war song, gets better the more you listen to it.
2. Some days are better than others- Funky grove, with missmatched guitar.
3. Elevation - High energy, great song
4. Beautifull Day - If a new band came along with a song this great it, they could live off of it for years. But because its U2 it gets lost in the wash of so many other songs.
5. Man and a woman- Completely underated song, listen to it a few times, perfectly played. I usually dont like the chick flicks they do, but there is something about this one.

/Its not the main stream music that is what makes U2 great, its the high energy alternative rock that keeps the devoted fans coming back.

Yes, but I am guessing that this weeks meat isn't much diffrent from last weeks. I worked for a large record distributor. Most stores have the album days before it goes on sale, but they risk penalties if they put it on the racks early. It's a huge effort for a record company to ship a large release out. Stuff is shipped via UPS and over the road truck lines. So everyone gets the product on a different day. The release date insures that the store down the street doesn't start selling something before you can. I can tell you that record stores and chains are like little children. If they think that the other guy is getting something that they are not then they throw an unbelievable fit. We constantly had stores calling to report each other for violating street date.

I have to admit, this is actually a good album. I was expecting crap like the last one (though it did have 3-4 good songs on it).

I've been looking for a song to dislike and the only one was GOYB but after listening to it for 4-5 times, i really like it.

the only main issue is that bono's voice isn't farked around with now, so its raspy and whatnot. it takes some getting used to but its not bad.

barneyfifesbullet 2009-02-20 03:43:56 PM
I like No Line On The Horizon.

I was expecting more crap than there actually is. There really isn't a bad song on it. I'll buy the cd when it comes out to go into the U2 section in my library.

Joshua Tree and before remains their peak, though.
