(Blabbermouth) Stupid If Yngwie Malmsteen's music wasn't excessive and pointless enough, his next release is an all-instrumental acoustic album of his old ballads, with string and choir arrangements added for extra pretentiousness   (roadrunnerrecords.com) divider line 46

His first album was freakin' awesome. All downhill from there.

That said, I will listen to clips of this in the iTunes Music store with an open mind.

lol, I hadn't seen that one, it's brilliant, I loved this one but I think it's even older.

I love Yngwie by the way, because these videos could just as easily be the real sound recorded.

This guy makes futile wank records, whose core audience are guitarists who take themselves way too seriously. I can't think of anything more trite, useless and less influential

Yngwie once did a tour with PAntera, and they farked with him a bit. this is a video of Pantera trying to give him donuts (new window)

He claims Blackmore as an influence, but only mimic's one aspect of his style.

I hate technically precise guitar. It's got all the emotion of an iPhone. I'll take a crazed, whacked-out, unpredictable soloist over an OCD flash jammer any day.

Once had a roommate who couldn't play guitar for shiat, but was a big Yngwie fan. He would spend hours trying to play various Yngwie riffs. Not songs, just the same riffs over, and over, and over, hour after hour, day after day. After a year and a half he still sucked.

If he's a Farker he'll show up here, so I thought this would be a good time to fess up.

Dude, your cat didn't run away. He shredded curtains better than you could ever hope to shred a guitar so I took him to a shelter.

Yeah..how dare someone with a passion for music and a natural talent practice endlessly until they have a complete mastery over their instrument. We should set him on fire and then use his burning limbs to bludgeon to death other dirtbags like Les Paul and that rotten no good evil bastard Chet Atkins.

yeah, heaven forbid the guy play with a high level of skill. I'd much rather listen to tom morrello wank into a fuzz box for 7 minutes. it has soul, man.

not a fan of yngwie but im so sick of people hating musicians because they're technically sound. most ridiculous statement i've ever heard. hate him because his music isn't to your liking, not because its technical.

I still enjoy his first album. Mostly instrumental stuff, great keyboard support. Some of his later stuff isn't bad either, although he doesn't really vary his technique all that much.

And it's rather baroque music. A Bach cantata isn't exactly James Brown or Muddy Waters, too.

His music is technical to a fault. If you want to spend 5 minutes of your concert ripping some of your famed speed-arpeggios, then sweet, but don't record an album of that shiat and call it song writing or get pissed when you are described as overly technical.

Love that shredding after all these years!

fantasizinghydrahead 2009-02-20 12:13:19 AM
I've got mixed feelings about Yngwie myself. As a practicing guitarist myself I just had to see his show in '08. Of course, it was obvious that this guy has a ridiculous command of the guitar and could do whatever he wanted to with it. Seeing him in person lets you know that you've a LONG way to go on the instrument yourself. If you play, its at least entertaining, exciting even. He's POWERTHIRST on six strings.

But the guy hits on a good idea in a song just every so often it seems. Some of what he does, I would say is good, even. I wish he'd play TO people, instead of AT people. Some guitarists use shred as the equivalent of a well placed exclamation point, some are the equivalent of typing in all caps with a million exclamation points with some 1's thrown in.

/thinks Shawn Lane, Allan Holdsworth and Buckethead mop the floor with Yngwie.
// Has Yngwie become the KennyG of guitar? Or is that Satch?

AgentOrangeDrink 2009-02-20 01:02:24 AM
I like to think of Yngwie as the extreme end of a musical spectrum, the other end being James Brown. One makes me dance and the other sounds like a dude masturbating with his own poop as lube. It's amazingly technically sound masturbation though.

High comedy in concert. He throws his guitar in the air and catches it like it's an egg toss. Odd the first time, but by the 15th time it just seems surreal.

Also, I've never seen so many people in leather pants fight over a guitar pick. Or so many people in leather pants come to think of it.

Ah, yes...pretensiousness.

To all the enemies of pretense in entertainment- I suppose it would be real entertainment if a construction worker came out and banged on a garbage can and talked about using a jackhammer for two hours? ALL entertainment is based on pretense. Complaining that any performance is too pretentious is like complaining that a buffet has too many items.

But in general, I can understand why people wouldn't like Yngvie's music.
