I'll go ahead the sum up the thread.

Pro-Obama: This was put together by the GOP! It's lies all of it and they can't be trusted.

Anti-Obama: The stimulus plan is a scam!

FTA: The CBO analysis, dated Feb. 11 and sent to Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), says the $787-billion plan will increase employment in the short-term, but will run up deficit spending which will "crowd out" private investment in the economy in the long-term.

Why was it sent to the man that rejected a cabinet position based on political leanings?

...
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the ranking Republican on the House Budget Committee, said the CBO analysis underestimates the long-term economic consequences.

"Number one, the spending spends out very slowly, so it doesn't give you much of a pop," Ryan told CNSNews.com. "Number two, it costs much more than advertised. Number three, at the end of the day, it would have been better to do nothing for the economy given that it [the stimulus package] will reduce GDP growth and wages."

Ah. More whargarbl. Lemme guess- tax cuts?

meat0918 2009-02-19 11:16:26 AM
I didn't read all of it, but did it basically say that because more people are going to be trying to find work, competition for those jobs will be higher, so those willing to take a lower wage may be hired on before someone that wants a higher wage; therefore causing wages to go lower overall?

By 2014, minimum wage will probably be even higher if the Democrats have their way. I doubt that possibility figured into the CBO report, because it isn't reality yet.

hillbillypharmacist [TotalFark] 2009-02-19 11:18:37 AM
rppp01a: Lemme guess- tax cuts?

I haven't heard a Republican give a single situation, even hypothetical, in which taxes could reasonably be raised.

Even killing someone is reasonable in many situations. But raising taxes? Never.

Gamer Grrrl [TotalFark] 2009-02-19 11:18:54 AM
This should make the GOP and their corporate masters very happy.

rppp01a 2009-02-19 11:18:55 AM
In its analysis, the CBO predicts that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will increase GDP through 2014. However, in the following years, "the legislation is estimated to reduce GDP by between 0 and 0.2 percent."

All of you republicans out there who should 'socialism', do you understand what gives way to the desire for socialism? It is the massive divide between rich and poor. It is the desire for equality of wages and standard of living. You should thank FDR for giving the US a middle class. Haven't heard much from the socialist movements in the last 60 years, have you?

And democrats are not socialists.

The report says that it will significantly raise GDP in the short term and that five years from now it will exert a very, very mild negative pressure on GDP for a few years ("the legislation is estimated to reduce GDP by between 0 and 0.2 percent"). I'll leave it to you to try to figure out why a non-partisan report that says, essentially, that the effect of the stimulus will be more positive than negative gets a headline that says "Obama's Stimulus Will Cause 'Lower Wages' for American Workers."

If you are a true fiscal conservative you should believe in a lower minimum wage anyway. Clearly you don't know what your party stands for.

We've been getting 'lower wages' for years already, due to pay increases not tracking with inflation. Now that we're heading into deflation, we're going to get more 'lower wages'? Color me shocked.

The big (and only important) difference is that the third world isn't going to be able to provide as much cheap crap for the underclasses to buy in an attempt to raise their standard of living.

Our standard of living is going to drop. That's the news. Not 'lower wages'. It'll be interesting to see what happens once Joe Sixpack realizes he can't ever buy that fancy new TV, truck, boat, and kitchen remodel. Sure, the credit market freeze has already made that difficult and the rising unemployment makes him want to hold off on some things...but those are short-term problems. What happens when he finds out this isn't going to get better for at least a decade?

Can he really go ten years without a giant HDTV, full-ton pickup, bass boat and granite counter-tops?

None of this has anything to do with any stimulus package. We were headed here regardless. This is the guaranteed eventuality of living on credit as a nation. The bill does eventually come due.

I'm just hoping for a few tax breaks and nationalized health care (hint: I work in the health care field).

If you work in the healthcare field and are pro National Healthcare you are a Moran. Seriously, it will be slow the creation of new treatments. It will also create less healthcare for everyone, but we will be equal in our lack of care right.

"The analysis concludes that the stimulus will put downward pressure on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and wages after 2014."

Our GDP numbers are bullshiat anyway, besides nothing the government has been doing as of late is thinking long term. The lobbyist think longer term than these buffoons.

Lobbyist probably wrote the majority of this 1400 page stimulus bill years ago.(long term thinking)

Congress passed a bill they didn't read.(Not sure what the hell they were thinking)

2014????

Come on, The Empire of quarterly profits doesn't think that far ahead.

I wasn't aware that the stimulus package forced my company to freeze our salaries this year. They did this before the package was put into law, so I guess they were just getting ready for the inevitable.

But yeah, you're right. This is all Obama's fault. Damn that Obama!

Kuroshin: Our standard of living is going to drop.

Not mine. Of course, I live a kinda austere lifestyle. I buy a new computer every few years. There's my big expense.

But yes, I am kinda annoyed that things are going into the dumper. I didn't live off of credit, and I actually paid off my school loans early (thus fighting the growth of M2 numbers).

I blame you.

These turds just won't quit until they pollute every possible punchbowl.

"Wake up, white people! The stimulus package will kill your father, rape and murder your sister, burn your ranch, shoot your dog, and steal your Bible!"

I say flush the lot of 'em and hire some people - on either side of the aisle, who have ideas beyond a Malcovitch-inspired repeating of the words "Tax Cuts." 2010 can't arrive soon enough.

Crowd out investment? What investment? They aren't investing, they are panicking. I'm not seeing exactly who is "investing" in the economy other than people looking to pick up cheap stocks. Which, of course, is the problem. That's why the government is the investor of last resort in this case.

A case can be made that tax-cuts did reboot the economy post-9/11, like it did during JFK and Reagan, but we did accumulate massive deficits because of it, and our wars.

For selfish reasons, i.e. survival, I'm willing to support whatever brings positive results to my life and the economy of my country, even though I am a con. This really is a time for 'desperate measures'.

That's what Keyneseian spending is. You borrow against long-term growth in order to make the worst of the recession less terrible. And there's really nothing wrong with that, smoothing GDP growth and employment makes total sense.
