I know a guy who used to be an officer on a nuclear sub.

He once told me, "I would always consider that the guy in the other boat is probably a lot like me, about the same age, a lot of the same fears and hopes in life. Probably has a wife or girlfriend somewhere worrying about him just like i do. And then I'd kill him anyway."

As one battlegroup member told me, if you're in the unfortunate position of getting lit up after you've made the mistake of firing on Canadian Forces over there, you duck or you die.

Your head. Keep it down. There's beer in Canada that needs drinking.

A land which I never shall lampoon
How I pine for the ice covering Lake Manitoba
And the beauty that is Saskatoon

Seriously, though, they're right- you get your poutine-ingesting, curling, Molson-swigging ass back to Canada in one piece.

We chose Afghanistan, and the most encouraging thing I heard over there was we're going to do it right. It's cost us 108 people, the highest per capita rate in all of ISAF, but once Canada has entered a war, it's never lost one. Not bragging - you can check the stats. To quote: "If we win, the exit becomes a simple matter. If we don't win outright, the exit is just lipstick on a pig."

Good luck, dude. Make us proud... but not in a martyr kind of way... that would suck.

Now if you could swipe back a couple bushels of poppies while you're at it, that would be a great help.

Joining the military sounds appealing - and then i remember that i hate authority, following orders, and keeping things tidy.

Keep on soldiering boys! Im proud of what you do, and im glad you got the patience to do it.

Hating the enemy serves no purpose.
It won't win a firefight or engagement.
It won't get you home any sooner.
Hate makes you sloppy, impulsive, foolish.
You do stupid things when you hate.
Hate make counterproductive actions seem great.

A soldier should never hate.
A soldier that hates isn't a soldier.

Not to be a troll, but we have what, 30,000 troops there now and Obama wants to double that. What makes anyone think the outcome will be different for us than it was for the Russians when they had 150,000 troops there?

Seriously, just wondering if a military solution is really possible.

Plus, we're not trying to take them over. We're just trying to get them to knock some of their shiat off.

A strictly military solution is impossible. Fortunately, higher-ups have realized that 'military' solutions don't exist.

We have a far better shot at turning Afghanistan around, partly due to a far warmer approach, and a reluctant Pakistan working (kinda sorta) with us, and even our one enemy in the area (again, kinda sorta) is Iran, and they HATE the Taliban, more than we do.

Also, the Soviets weren't exactly the warm-fuzzy types, and had a very 'kill everything and everyone' approach that really didn't endear them to anyone.

That read poorly. Not, "how is that necessary?"... "how is that not nobel?"

For a soldier to still maintain his humanity and observe the enemy as an actual human being, even when you know that the objective is to snuff out eachothers lives, this a unique luxury that is rarely extended to us. This the epitimy of nobility. War is farking hell, bro.

The primary mission in Afghanistan is to find Bin Laden and capture him, or determine if he's already dead.

The Russians had a very different mission.

Not to mention that we are only trying to fight one group (essentially) in the region, with the occasional conflict with the war lords. Yes the Taliban still enjoys pretty significant support but I think far more Afghanis see the ISAF as generally a good thing than they did the Soviets.
