(Media Matters) Fail Did you know that the stimulus bill will prohibit any religious activity in facilities receiving money; that the Obama administration advocated cutting the defense budget by 10 percent? Neither did I until a Fox special clued me in   (mediamatters.org) divider line 241

Shocking isn't it. Obama is also going to take away the guns of private citizens, shut down right wing radio and require everybody to to gay-marry an aborted fetus so the stem cells can be harvested.

Also, we'll have to go to atheist un-churches.

I can't speak to the latter, but the former is an absolute lie. The bill contains the same language that every spending bill does concerning using monies on facilities the primary purpose of which is religious worship.

I remember back in high school (when Clinton was president), one of my classes was told to look at the budget, and see how we would change it. One of the things I cut was military spending. The teacher questioned me on it like I was some unpatriotic scumbag.

Why do we need to spend so much on our military?

Well, we get most of our technological breakthroughs from their R&D programs. Porn is a close second.

Why do we need to spend so much on our military?

In order to rule the world. Do you know how many military bases we have around trhe world? And those Nimitz class carriers aren't cheap either. Not to mention invisible jet fighters, star wars, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc., etc.

The cuts aren't in R&D - they're in specific program procurements - that is, less of certain things that are already in production.

We really don't need 300 F-22s ... though 300 FA-35s would be nice.

In the stimulus package?

Poppycock!

These are great ideas that should be included in the next Federal budget.

hubiestubert [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 06:50:28 PM
It's interesting the reaction to childcare from the folks who want to end welfare. If there are single mothers out there, or families who are underemployed, and they have kids, assistance with child care makes sense.

It makes sense in a couple of ways. Parents can both work, and NOT then need direct assistance. And single parents have less to worry about, and can keep working without the worry about babysitters and the like. The assistance for child care means that child care workers don't have to cut back on their own workers as well. It keeps people working and able to work.

If MORE people can work, and giving them a hand with child care means that folks are better able to get out there and be active in the work force. One would think that kids being taken care of AND folks working is a better alternative than parents who either can't work because they can't afford child care, or parents who have to take crappier jobs to be able to have the time to get to and from their less qualified and less documented child care alternatives.

The outright lies about the package, that's to be expected. I'm waiting for folks to claim that they were instrumental for parts that are found to work, among those who voted against the bill.

Also, our defense budget is HUGE. I'm sure can afford to trim some of the budget to make room for other needs. Only thing that would really piss me off is if the bill caused a drop in pay for the troops.

Far as I'm concerned, if you're willing to get shot at/bombed/whatever while serving in the armed forces, you deserve a respectable paycheck. Even if I don't agree with the root causes of the military engagement.

Summary: In Fox News' special, Trillion with a T, Bret Baier promoted or repeated several myths and falsehoods about President Obama and the economic recovery bill, including that some of the spending in the bill -- which Obama has now signed into law -- isn't stimulus

Even the brain dead Obamabots admit they even they don't think everything in the bill is stimulus. Media Matters fails again.

this is a false equivalency. just because media matters has an overt partisan mission does not mean they cannot tell the difference between reality and make believe. in fact you may notice that when media matters makes a claim they make... dun dun dun... citations to the original source.

We need to cut "defense" spending. I'm all for killing religious intolerants but 42 cents from every tax dollar is way too much money. And I should be getting more bang for my 16% in tax dollars toward health care.

fallingcow 2009-02-18 07:12:46 PM
I wish someone'd cut defense spending.

But by more like 20-25%.

10% is just a cut to reduce overall spending, 5% becomes the annual budget for a pure-research institution like the Academies of enlightenment Europe, 2-3% goes to NASA, and the balance goes toward merit-based college scholarships and/or health care.
