Not only is it offensive... but it dances along the law against saying "Shoot" and "President" in the same breath.

absoluteparanoia 2009-02-18 02:56:23 PM
Jesus, at least when we painted Bush as a monkey we at least tried to make the monkey have a Bush face.

This is just plain racist.

If Sharpton limited his outrage to really offensive crap like this, he'd definately get the response it deserves.

Pocket Ninja: I was at the grocery store the other day and saw Barack Obama hot sauce.

Honest to god, when I was walking down to the inaugural concert I saw a store selling Obama grape drink. It gave us an idea: Have a scavenger hunt to see who could collect the most Obama gear. Two teams.

the chimp is supposed to be obama? i thought it was just the chimp that attacked that woman, and they were simply suggesting the stimulus bill was so stupid it was written by a deranged chimp.

it wasn't really funny, but i didn't think the chimp was obama.

Oh, sure, yeah...it was that chimp that attacked that lady...even though there is no knife in the chimp's hand and that chimp has fark all to do with the stimulus plan. Sure.

Lie to yourself much?

No YOU'RE a Towel [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:07:15 PM
It's probably not meant to be racist.

It's meant to be funny presumably, so he definitely missed that mark.

Chariset [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:07:31 PM
It's tasteless, but it isn't necessarily racist. It could be a subtle callback to the million-monkeys-on-typewriters meme. That the stimulus bill is like the work of a deranged ape pounding on a keyboard and not the product of a sensible, reasonable mind.

....on the other hand, political cartoons aren't really known for their subtlety.

This. Silly me, I wasn't even aware that Obama wrote the stimulus bill, I thought congress did.

dillenger69 [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:08:37 PM
Equal time for equal metaphors ... the press has always been fond of depicting the sitting president as a monkey. Just because Obama happens to be black doesn't mean he gets a free pass. That's as bad as women wanting complete equality ... until it offends them or they have to fork over some cash. Then it's bad and they need to be treated like a lady.

People need to lighten up. It wasn't a race crack, it was an intelligence crack based on current events (monkey attack).

True, but when other President's are depicted as monkeys - they at least attempt to make the monkey LOOK like that President. This is stupid.

Yeah. It takes a strained effort of will not to make a connection between the dead monkey and the person most closely associated with the stimulus bill. It's hard to believe the artist was so tin-eared the connection never occurred to him while drawing this.

Maybe you can explain why two police officers would shoot the president?

hillbillypharmacist [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:13:50 PM
I don't think anyone, even wingnut racists, thinks that Obama actually wrote the stimulus bill. It's just an unfortunate easy conclusion to jump to. Hell, Obama didn't even seem to care about Biden's 'articulate' remark.

Sensitive people are sensitive.

mattharvest [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:14:01 PM
So, just to play Devil's Advocate a bit: I didn't see this as even being about Obama as a person. It was saying that whomever wrote the package was as crazy as a chimpanzee, such as the chimp that mauled that woman a few days ago.

Maybe I'm giving a racist too much credit, I dunno.

lolwut?

let's look at the actual cartoon.

images2.dailykos.com

is there something you can point out about the chimp that suggests it is obama? does it look like obama? do they call it obama? is it wearing a campaign button?

really, anything. anything at all.

If I was this cartoonist's employer, I wouldn't be concerned with whether or not the cartoonist was racist. I'd be much more concerned with why the cartoonist isn't funny.

Actually, really looking at the cartoon - I can't see anything that relates to the stimulus bill at all. The cartoon isn't just unfunny, it's illogical and dumb.

DarthBrooks: I think if you're reading that cartoon as "Chimp=Obama," you've got some serious racial issues in your own head to deal with.

Exactly. It's an unfunny cartoon based around a local story. In no way does it suggest the chimp is Obama, none.

But at least we get our monthly reminder that Al Sharpton is still alive.

i've just discovered some other gross racism.

the infinite monkey theorem is clearly meant to imply that black men can't write as well as anglo-saxons and it would take them a thousand years to put together a work of shakespeare.

BobtheFascist 2009-02-18 03:30:40 PM
Considering we have likened politicians to chimps for a long time, the cartoonist could be suggesting the stimulus pkg was written by a bunch of trained monkies.

I guess it's true. If you look hard enough you can find something offensive in damn near anything.

There's nothing better than being lectured on racism by people who think of black people when they see a cartoon monkey.

As I said in one of the previous, red-lit versions of this thread:

"I think they were going for 'the stimulus bill may well have beens written by actual monkeys,' rather than 'the stimulus bill was written at the behest of a porch monkey.'"

Racist? No.
Funny? Meh.

Obdicut [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:40:58 PM
Stupid cartoon.

Not racist, unless the incompetent cartoonist is also incompetent at being racist. And there's a pretty low bar for racism.
