FTA:Monique Wright-Williams had always forbidden her three girls from watching hip-hop music videos because of the way they portray women as "hoochies or sex objects," she said.

FTFA: "I'm obviously disappointed," Wright-Williams, a youth services agency director, said. "He was in a good position to serve so many young black children well. Whenever anybody who is in a good position to have a nice impact on my children, and children in general, tumbles and falls in such an important way, it's here we go again."

How about "when I accept some celebrity's carefully crafted public image as reality and then it turns out they're an actual human being with faults just like normal people, it's here we go again." instead, dipshiat? People like actors, athletes and singers should only be viewed as inspiration to the point of trying to be as good at their particular craft as they are, not for a direction on how to live your life.

Nice. A parent takes some personal responsibility for raising her children, rather than depending on the government to protect them from what she feels is a bad influence, and you throw a whambulance at her.

"I don't ever want them to think of themselves as a sex object," she told ABCNews.com.

It's FUN to think of yourself as a sex object when with the right person and in the right situation. I think she means she doesn't want her kids to ever think of themselves as JUST a sex object.

The movie was shiat, but the sausages scene still cracks me up to this day.

It's kind of like how I know I really shouldn't find Kim Kardashian hot -- I really shouldn't find Tom Green funny. But I do.

Sigh.

Too bad for Chris Brown that he's manufactured this "good boy" image. If it had been Ice-T being accused of the crime, no one would have been surprised - it would have been business as usual.

Jeeeeezus, but I hate these f*cking non-stories: "You're black and here's a news story about a black person. May we have your black opinion (which is clearly representational of all black people) and present it as news?"

When do we EVER see similar media approaches to Nick Nolte mugshots, Winehouse drug abuse, or Sean Connery's slapping-my-woman-is-fine attitude? To wit: "You're white and here's a news story about a white person. What do white people think about Amy Winehouse's drug use? Does it reflect badly on white people?"

gadian [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 05:47:08 PM
The black community could go a long way with distancing themselves from their celebrities. When a man represents a culture, you have a problem. White folks learned this a long time ago.

Fark Me To Tears [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 05:54:55 PM
FTFA: So when the Syracuse, N.Y., family learned that Brown had been arrested last week for allegedly beating his pop-star girlfriend Rihanna, the news came as a shock. "I'm obviously disappointed," Wright-Williams, a youth services agency director, said. "He was in a good position to serve so many young black children well. Whenever anybody who is in a good position to have a nice impact on my children, and children in general, tumbles and falls in such an important way, it's here we go again." Perhaps. The fall of a teen idol is familiar territory. But the swift and critical public response to Brown's arrest from the Williams family and other members of the black community has come as something of a surprise to some people.

Okay, I'm hopelessly white.

Can I ask our Farkers of color out there: Do you really think in this collective mentality that's always portrayed in the media? Do you really depend on celebrity role models to raise your children properly, like the press indicates that you do? Are you part of a hive consciousness like the Borg? Do you constantly look to your "community leaders" for guidance on how to think?

Seriously, the way the news media portray the collective conscience of minorities in this country, I would be greatly insulted if I was part of one of those groups.

(In fact, several years ago, I was supposed to be an "angry white male" who felt a certain way and voted a certain way because the press said so. I might have felt a little disenfranchised now and then, but I certainly didn't vote a certain way because I was told to).

Isn't this guy just a performer? Isn't he just doing this for the money, a sense of achievement, and the recognition of his success? Did he sign an enlistment contract somewhere that said he was "serving" the youth? Parents can just as easily point to him now and say to their kids, "Don't let this happen to you." Chris Brown is under no obligation to raise your children for you, and you shouldn't depend on someone like him to set an example for them. You, as their parent/guardian, should set the example for them.

He does have an obligation NOT to beat the crap out of his girlfriend. We've been over this hundreds of times. Being a role model comes with the territory. Just like the money and creeps going through your trash.

Parents should be the major influence in a kids life but, they are not the ONLY influence. Ever. If you are still crying out "they aren't role models" you are either being willfully ignorant, horribly inobservant (is that a word?), or trolling.

Do you really believe that garbage? I vaguely remember that when I was younger and some celebrity got into a scandal, I had the sense to know that it was a bad thing. If you teach your children critical thinking -- that is, teach them to think intelligently for themselves and not to just blindly follow any "role model" -- then you are doing your job as a parent. BTW... my parents taught me that celebrities were just that -- celebrities.

The black media was portraying it as a cultural thing. The white media was too afraid to say much of anything at first.

That is where all of the "Whites go hunting" retorts came from.
