They were all a little too obvious and lame.

But hey, Queen made the list three times so that's cool.

Phil Collins?!!!!???
/I need a steam roller to run over Mr. Subby's head

eh, the only one I really like was the JA track, and that's not even their best song.

I guess you have the same objection to the Fark layout. I much prefer this layout to the ones that trap you with endless nexts.

It's not 50 clicks. All the songs are identified by their album cover and they're all on the same page, so you can pick and choose which to link to.

I can think of a couple of cool song moments that should have been included.

1) the "wham-banm thank you maam" moment in Suffragette City by David Bowie

2) the segue between Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va on Santana's Abraxas.

3) the back and forth between the speakers in Living Loving Maid (She's just a woman) on Led Zeppelin II.

#14 Gimme Shelter:

"And let's not forget Merry Clayton's insanely great screaming vocals throughout this tune as well, both parts deserve recognition!"

The coolest part is where her voice breaks and you can hear some band member blown away say "Whoa".

Sliding Carp [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 02:23:41 PM
I didn't see the Kinks on that page, which means that Victoria wasn't on the page, which means that the part near the end of the song where someone (Dave?) is shouting and laughing like a maniac isn't listed, which means this list is wrong.

/11 - every time it comes up on shuffle in the car.

dstanley 2009-02-18 02:24:29 PM
#2 should have been #1.

Aarontology [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 02:25:06 PM
The Femmes are an underrated American treasure who really deserve far more praise than they get.

This is absolutely true.

NightOwl2255 2009-02-18 02:28:04 PM
If you are going to include the scream from The Who, which has been ruined forever by David "Worst Actor Alive" Caruso, you have to include the scream from Comfortable Numb.

thamike 2009-02-18 02:29:13 PM
They also forgot the slide-guitar opening to "Memo From Turner" (Performance soundtrack) by Ry Cooder and Mick Jagger. It has to be one of the coolest openings ever.

Also, WHERE WAS "JUMP INTO THE FIRE" BY HARRY NILSSON!?

thamike 2009-02-18 02:30:34 PM
Aarontology: This is absolutely true.

The Femmes are underrated? Somebody needs to set fire to their rolodex.

phil collins doesn't belong on any top 50 list

bobgilbert [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 02:37:08 PM
My favorite of all-time is the part in "Holier Than Thou" where in about the middle of the song there is a few seconds of bass solo which is then joined by a guitar, and another, etc....Kinda hard to describe but I know that every time I hear that song in the car I look down and am going about 90 MPH

Except for "The Top 50 People We Would Actually Like to See Trapped in the Home By the Sea."

What about Bonzo's steel drum solo in "Moby Dick?"

Oops, "Holier Than Thou" by Metallica that is.

I am ashamed to say that I had never heard it before (I just looked it up and listened) and that was amazing.

Not pretending that Metallica's moment in "Holier Than Thou" was the best, merely my favorite that I didn't see it on their list

bulldg4life [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 02:52:02 PM
I'm not clicking through all those...but is Layla on there anywhere?

Eddie Adams from Torrance [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 02:58:12 PM
Is praying for the end of that list.

Dust [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:02:54 PM
I'm surprised that bits from two GNR songs didn't make it on the list - the beginning of Welcome to the Jungle is truly epic, and the main riff from Sweet Child O' Mine is one of the greatest riffs ever...

...and I don't even really like GNR that much.

tnpir [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:19:03 PM

This. End of discussion.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:27:04 PM
If you are going to include the scream from The Who, which has been ruined forever by David "Worst Actor Alive" Caruso, you have to include the scream from Comfortable Numb.

The Comfortably Numb scream is too produced. Each scream fits well into its own song.

The award for strained simile goes to number three: It's having sex on a swing set with 50 quadriplegic midgets with feathers in their mouth.

The rock station I listened to as a kid was big on Heart. Still is, sometimes when I drive through. In Boston they don't get played.

wee [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 03:55:53 PM
There not much worse than a Phil Collins song.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 04:06:12 PM
I saw number 1, I knew instantly what it is and I concur, it belongs there.

Gulper Eel [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 04:15:37 PM
The drum fill near the end of "Everyday I Write The Book" (at around 3:28).

The piano on "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" (that's weird, it's also at 3:28).

When the band comes in at the start of Genesis' "Dance on a Volcano" about six seconds in.

The bass line that opens Stevie Wonder's "I Wish".

Frank Sinatra: the end of "Angel Eyes" - 'Scuse me while I disappear... (wish I could find a less-grainy sounding version).

ricewater_stool [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 04:24:16 PM
This list was farking WEAK. What a waste of 5 minutes.

CitizenTed [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 04:25:30 PM
I would have included the guitar tritone opening in Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath". I know, it's old. But as you listen closely to the sound of pouring rain and a distant bell, and you look at that ghostly green figure on the album cover, suddenly out of your speakers comes three overwhelmingly evil chords. They ring out endlessly into a trill, and with savage cymbals return again and again like something very powerful and dreadful is heading your way - and gaining fast.

Then comes Ozzy's metallic voice like a horror novel narrator. No one had done anything as dramatic and dark as this. Those three notes ushered in every form of atmospheric hard rock/metal that followed. And it has yet to be surpassed in sheer creepiness.

z_gringo [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 04:28:02 PM
That is an awesome list. Thanks submitter.

YES.

mekkab: YES.

Don't forget the opening to "Queen B*tch."

OR

ANY part of "Moonage Daydream."

No "JUDE JUDE AH JUDY JUDY JUDY JUDY OWWW OWWW!"? FAIL

This, let alone in the #1 spot.
But if someone insists on picking a "best" Phil Collins song, it'd have to be In The Air Tonight, if only for the memory value.

/feeling charitable

Infamous Dr. X [TotalFark] 2009-02-18 05:17:24 PM
That list doesn't include my favorite [insert obscure whatever], so obviously idiots made it.

That list involves me clicking more than once, so obviously idiots made it.

That list didn't absolutely change the way I view the world, so not only was it obvious that idiots made it, but it was also so offensive to me that I'm going to come into a forum and waste even MORE of my time (and yours) by whingeing away about it to make myself feel superior and sophisticated.

Did you make that list, sweetheart? If so, I for one don't have much of a problem with it. Just a little obvious, is all.

/maybe Patrick Bateman made the list

steveo 2009-02-18 05:26:37 PM
The transition from "Brain Damage" to "Eclipse".

And also, the first solo from "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls is the penultimate 80s guitar moment.

You're right. I checked. My favorite band is not on the list.

This sucks!

Gangway Fathead 2009-02-18 05:28:21 PM
That's silly - the best moment on Van Halen's 1984 is the outro to Girl Gone Bad.

Sheesh!

Prince of Pluto 2009-02-18 05:30:51 PM
I've always liked that part at the end of Concrete Blonde's cover of "Everybody Knows" when Johnette just cuts loose. Hell, anytime that woman cuts loose gives me a chill. What a voice!

busy chillin' 2009-02-18 05:32:54 PM
I was going to be a contrarian, because I like being a contrarian, but then I clicked the link and have to agree.

Actually, some friends and I were chillin' just a few weeks ago and this song was playing. We were talking but when that part came on, we all shut up and air drummed that shiiii.

I'm sorry but #1 is that part of Bohemian Rhapsody where it transitions from the weirdass opera-y bit to the hard rock n roll electric guitar, as perfectly exemplified in the movie "Wayne's World".

InmanRoshi 2009-02-18 05:37:20 PM
I guess the Who is represented with Baba and Won't Get Fooled, but nothing gives chills like Daltry hitting that first LOOOOOOOOVE on Love Reign O'er Me. Especially if you're listening to the entire album from front to back and that payoff has been building up over the course of an hour and 15 minutes.

Prince of Pluto: I've always liked that part at the end of Concrete Blonde's cover of "Everybody Knows" when Johnette just cuts loose.

Whenever I hear that song I can't help but imagine Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis riding toward a crowd of cheering teenagers in a red jeep.

The list had no Pink Floyd and therefore sucked.

I'd also throw out a personal favorite: Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.

The opening for Bang A Gong by T. Rex is also classic.

I'd have taken the pick-slide and final chord from that one.

And the final keyboard wipe from "The Court of the Crimson King."
