I would replace "Ask" with "I Know It's Over" or "Death of a Disco Dancer" ... I never really liked Ask at all, but those 2 I can't get enough of.

Got to see "Disco Dancer" last year at a Moz show and it was so awesome.

when the guy sitting next to you was administering a salahj to you, did you do him the courtesy of cutting his arm with a straight razor while crying?

a colleague recently told me that "Morrissey actually growls on the live version off Rank," then played me the clip

Not a bad list for someone who never heard Rank.

That joke isn't funny anymore Smithmitter.

Since half his songs are about political and social issues, I guess every band who ever wrote a love song or a ballad must be emo. Hear that KISS? Your fans are cutters!

"Best Smith's Song".

That's like... "Favorite Prison Rape".. right?

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-02-17 02:30:05 PM
If the list was done a bit more objectively "How soon is now" would be #1,2,3,4 and just to be sure, #5. And no "Queen is dead"? A travesty!

would you agree that he's pretty emotional about those issues though?
blog.peta.org.uk

to be fair, you could probably get a salahj at either one of those concerts.

if being passionate about social issues is emo, then Dylan is the King of Emo.

you're the one that brought up emo - i'm just speaking to the fairly pervasive idea that you can get a hand job from a crying stranger at a morrissey concert.

ha. forgive me for assuming "cutting" and "crying" were not emo references.

I'd put different songs on this list, but then again I want what I can't have.

There are 10 good Smiths Songs? I can't think of one.

Valdes 2009-02-17 04:16:01 PM
I present to you the following in increasing order of suck:

Super Furry Animals (epitome of non-suck, we need a starting point here folks)
The Clash
The Beastie Boys
The Beatles
Fugazi
A lot of really good bands, too numerous to list here
Metallica
The Dave Mustaine Experience
Anything that rhymes with American Idol
Canadian Music (all)
Radiohead
Muse
Britney Spears
Coldplay
LaToya Jackson
Steven Segal
Kevin Costner
The Smiths

Pretty much. I've never listened to Super Furry Animals and frankly don't plan on doing it anytime soon, so his list fails.

mactobain [TotalFark] 2009-02-17 04:23:30 PM
I'd add What Difference Does It Make, but otherwise a good list.

When you're backpacking through Italy and a cute girl from Wales becomes your friend for two days because her aunt did the cover art for a Super Furry Animals record, and you're the only American she's met that has even heard of the band (this being some years back), then SFA automatically becomes your number 1 band forever.

There's nothing wrong with consensually slaying broads any way you can, but that doesn't have to define your music taste. Hell, I'd love some really lame shiat if I went that route.

can you imagine how many more women would hang out with you if they knew how much time you spent populating hilarious lists with the intent of making fun of popular bands? you'd be rolling in women. print out this thread and show it to women at bars.

"Rusholme Ruffians"!!!!

FANTASTIC! I <3 that song! In high school my band would play "Got the Time" (really the Anthrax version more so than Joe Jacksons original) and after the bass solo, go straight into Rusholme Ruffians (bass part ended on the same note).

I think we've come to the root of how Valdes decides what music he likes.

So what defines music he doesn't like? Did a Radiohead fan not give him a reacharound and instead give him a donkey punch?

Gangway Fathead 2009-02-17 04:43:48 PM
My top ten in no particular order...

Headmaster Ritual
What Difference Does It Make?
Accept Yourself
Stop Me If You think That you've heard this one before
How Soon Is Now
That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore (2+ minute outro FTW)
Half A Person
The Queen Is Dead
Rusholme Ruffians (Rank version with "Marie's The Name")
Ask

Valdes 2009-02-17 04:45:26 PM
Seriously though, I don't understand why anyone likes this band. They seem like a dopey version of the Cure, only more sucky. I mean, does anyone really think much of Morrissey's self-absorbed whining?

MisterLoki 2009-02-17 04:47:58 PM
No "Reel Around the Fountain"? How depressing....

Eh. I doubt anyone ever got laid listening to Fugazi, so your argument sort of fails there.

On second look, the list on the Paste site is very pop-centric and pretty weak.

Not a single song from Meat Is Murder (unless you count How Soon Is Now) and the only mention of Strangeways is the awful "girlfriend in a coma."

Well, he mentions he hadn't even heard Rank, so I think he just pulled 10 songs off of a Greatest Hits record.

I Know It's Over is my go to break-up song. You can listen to that one at just the right time and completely fall apart.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just want you to know that yours is wrong.

/Smiths are one of the most underrated bands ever.

You know, at least Valdes says what music he does like while he puts down other music.

I'm pretty sure no one ever had any fun listening to Fugazi.

That headline is a hackneyed joke, perpetuated by people that never knew anything about The Smiths in the first place. They NEVER made me depressed, that's just stupid.

But then I lost my virginity to "Louder Than Bombs", so perhaps I'm a bit biased. It's hard to think of the line "The rocks below say throw your skinny body down, son" when you popped your first cork with a girl at the moment they were being sang.

/Stupid Non-Smiths listening to half-wit trolls, *grumble*

No, but I did make out with a girl I met at a teen club while "Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse" was playing on my tape deck. I never saw her again after that. I guess "Gods Gift Maggot" didn't get her very moist.

I actually didn't think that much of Fugazi until their last album. The final Fugazi album is a flat out masterpiece. And Margin Walker off 13 songs is one of the greatest rock songs ever written (as long as you ignore the lyrics).

mehwe 2009-02-17 06:08:30 PM
I wouldn't replace any. However I would have made it 13 and put Sing your Life, Sunny and Rubber ring on the list

I always liked Cemetry Gates.

See, there's where you went wrong. "Cleanse, Fold & Manipulate" is much better music for seduction. If that didn't do it, you could have at least put your pride in the trash bin for the moment and played some Sisters of Mercy. Nothing gets goth chicks hotter.

Their musical output aside, you have to admit, a good chunk of their fan base is on the same level as the one you attribute to Smith's fans. They just carve "sXe" into their arm instead of leaving "I need attention" marks.

I actually totally agree. I also think their lead singer is kind of a commie douche. If they hadn't made "The Argument" I would have written Fugazi off as almost complete and total trash. It's too bad they quit when they were actually starting to get interesting.

Nah, CF&M, pretty much provided me with the same experience DeepDownHounds had. I can laugh about it now.....
