How does this work?

Homeowner: Hello?
Reverse 911: Do you have an emergency?
Homeowner: No, no, just reading a book right now.
Reverse 911: Do you anticipate any emergency in the next 10-12 minutes?
Homeowner: No, just finishing the chapter.
Reverse 911: Okay sir, just checking. Have a nice night

In Soviet San Diego, police station calls YOU.

Seriously, the reverse 911 system is a way that emergency services can contact an area with specific info, recently, they've been using it to notify people to evacuate when there is a fire.

the1andonlykris 2009-02-15 11:22:25 PM
Reverse 911 is when the police call you to alert you to a danger. Remember those wildfires in Oct. 2007? Reverse 911 was used to notify people that they should evacuate

AzErNy: Love the details in the article. What the fark is a reverse 911 call?

jdamaral: How does this work?

Dials people to give them emergency information. For instance, if there's a flood, or a wildfire and they need to evacuate.

Or if there are crazy gunmen in their neighborhood and they need to lock their doors and windows.

Reverse 911 is used so that you can be notified in case of an emergency, like forest fires. Did anyone explain this yet?

So if you're being raped, or your house is on fire, make sure you answer the phone if it rings. It could be your only chance of help.

I didn't get the call. Guess I'm not on the list of people to save in the coming apocalypse.

The computer decided it needed to inform the citizens of some important information. To wit:

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help you.

jdamaral 2009-02-15 11:35:43 PM

I would laugh my ass off if I answered the phone and a computer said that.

jdamaral: So what's reverse 911?

It's when the cops call you to notify you of an emergency. For things like floods, earthquakes, forest fires, local donut shop's out of crullers, Amber alerts, etc. It works the way the dial-a-neighbor thing did back before the cops and media made people too afraid to know their neighbors.

If only floods, earthquakes, and fires generated some visible phenomenon so we could know they were happening...

Dude, that's seriously funny. I just deciphered that one, and I get it. I never thought a joke could be genuinely funny if you didn't get it right off the bat. But why is the jpeg called whale? I'm sure there's something I'm not getting there. Please do tell.

My friend was able to evacuate faster from those same fires with her severely disabled son because of that reverse 911 system. If she'd been caught in the main evacuation rush, it would have been much much worse for them. Her house was okay, but up the block, not so much. It is extremely useful for situations like these.

I know she's rather get a false call than not get a real one.

/It was amazing to go to RB a year later and see how much they've recovered. Very few empty lots now.

I prefer, "Go fark yourself, San Diego." That's the greatest line ever said by a (fake) news anchor.

My city decided to use reverse 911 to inform the people in my neighborhood that our water source was contaminated.

Too bad no one on my blco had a land line.

One of the most significant features of San Diego's reverse-911 system is that you can register your cell phone/VOIP phone to your home location and receive reverse-911 calls even away from home.
