How can a country that bans citizens from owning guns justify having a standing army?

Richard Saunders 2009-02-15 05:29:03 PM
They use Ewoks as snipers?

You meant to say "Wookies," right?

/guy looks way too tall to be an Ewok

I want one. For home defense, of course.

Zombies are terrible at sneaking and hiding ;)

Sigh...

My range only goes out to 300 yards...

sullyman 2009-02-15 06:03:16 PM
Kills from a mile but its range is 260 yards short of a mile at best.

The L115A3 Long Range Sniper Rifle - based on a weapon used by the British Olympic shooting team - weighs 15lbs, fires 8.59mm rounds and has a range of 1,100-1,500 yards.

Still want one though.

Somebody has to keep the masses in line when the conditioning gets weak....

Wow...So at a mile, it takes the bullet 1.7 seconds to kill your buddy, but it takes the sound 4.7 seconds to get to you...that's enough to soil some britches, I imagine.

sirgrim [TotalFark] 2009-02-15 06:20:47 PM
Current record is held by a Canadian picking off an al-qaeda terrorst at 2.5 miles.

I'm sure that the vids are still up on the net somewhere, but back about 4-5 years ago, there were a lot of sniper take-out videos that were readily accessible.

After watching the farking dillweed terrorists chopping off innocents' heads, I have to admit that I relished watching them getting their shiat all blown up by our snipers.

Sniper being interviewed by liberal reporter:

Q. "Well, what do you feel when you kill someone like that?"
A. "Recoil."

Last week Army snipers were training with the rifle and full camouflage on the snow-covered ranges of the Support Weapons School at the Land Warfare Centre at Warminster, Wiltshire.

Good training to have before being deployed into the desert..

Meh. You should see how getting lit up by a LAV III's low-tech 25mm cannon, or finding themselves downrange of an M777 gets the Taliban's full and complete attention.

The government has a monopoly on crime. How else would you expect it be justified?

Afghanistan is very mountainous and has plenty of snow.

Two days under cover? Met a guy who operated (up to six) weeks under cover. Well, so he claimed.

RoyBatty 2009-02-15 07:29:46 PM
The supergun could kill from 600 miles away. We destroyed one being built in Iraq.

"The gun would be able to fire 600 kg projectile to a range of 1,000 kilometers, or a 2,000 kg rocket-assisted projectile into orbit."

thereadlines [TotalFark] 2009-02-15 07:30:27 PM
This will only encourage the Taliban to develop and deploy their own superguns.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.50-90_Sharps

"Billy Dixon used a Sharps .50-90 at the Second Battle of Adobe Walls in June 27, 1874 to make his legendary 1538 yard shot."

Not that the gun isn't cool, but the article needs more explanation as to why.

ebonada 2009-02-15 07:31:26 PM
That's all?

Wikipedia's entry on the range of snipers:

"The longest range recorded for a sniper kill currently stands at 2,430 meters (2,657 yd, or 1.51 miles), accomplished by Corporal Rob Furlong, a sniper from Newfoundland, Canada, in March 2002 during the war in Afghanistan."

Gets farking cold there. High altitude too.

sparkeyjames 2009-02-15 07:33:23 PM
U.S. Snipers use 50 cal rifles among others. Those can kill at up to 2500 yards. I have a friend who is a former Army Ranger sniper. As much as he is allowed to say which isn't much is that he made a few kills from 2000+ yards out with a 50 cal. He also said he disabled more than 50 enemy vehicles. He served in Bosnia back in the 90's.

With the can the gun you don't have any sound. That's what suppressors do.

They don't need to develop them. Al Qaeda bought a few 50 cal sniper rifles in America. Now everybody wants one.

I dream of the day when wars will be fought online as the two armies collide over shouts of "OMG you farkin cheat", "Your mum" and "PWNed". Will hopefully save a few lives.
