Radiohead's Paranoid Android is the closing theme for Ergo Proxy, one of the most intriguing bits of SF ever perpetrated, so they get my vote.

I think hip-hop should be represented here, as well. Let's not forget Kool Keith/Dr.Octogon/Dr.Doom.

No mention of Hawkwind? An SF/fantasy prog rock band that had an actual best-selling SF/fantasy author (Michael Moorcock). Really?

Talking only major bands . . . no Blue Oyster Cult? Hell, they could be the best science band for their non-fiction and (then) up-to-date song about the theoretical properties of black holes, Heavy Metal: Black and Silver.

Not like this discussion even matters, but still.

Let me combine your first and second paragraphs and recommend the live version of BoC's "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", cowritten by Moorcock.

I think we're missing the point here. It's easy to come up with a better choice than U2 because U2 sucks. U2 sucks more than suck itself.

Vangelis? Blade Runner soundtrack aside, pretty much everything he's done is pretty mundane Hollywood scores. A better choice would have been Klaus Schulze.

Numan? No. Too corny. However suggesting Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Devo is pretty much the same as those "douchebag underground bands."

They're better than U2 for any genre of sci-fi other than "Epic Lameness."
It's not that U2 isn't good at what they do, it's that what they do sucks major balls for anything more exciting than a relaxing sunday afternoon in a laz-E-boy with a dime bag.

Monster Magnet, on the other hand, is on the Heavy Metal 2000 sound track. Not the best movie, but 1,000 time more sci fi than anything U2 ever did except make Bono popular.

In other word: Yes, Monster Magnet.

FLA, definitely, although Leeb is by all accounts one of the biggest Wentz in the history of industrial music. Kraftwerk wanted to be the biggest band of the future, but they got a lot of things wrong and got messed up in their own ego's.

Juno Reactor? Please, even diehard psytrance fans dislike them.

Point blank, it comes down to one dude who kicked music into the future.

Juan Atkins.

After that, Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus.

Well, seeing as I've been in churches that have used U2 songs as worship music ("Where the Streets Have No Name" and "With Or Without You", among others), I think it's fitting that U2 should be relegated to the realm of the make-believe. I think they take themselves far too seriously, myself, and I'm not willing to be a part of their extensive subculture just to understand what some of their songs are talking about.

Incidentally, this article is written by a U2 fanboy who mocks comic book fans and trekkers in one breath and then admits that he spends a lot of his time and money buying U2 merchandise. Judge his credibility for yourself.

He also doesn't understand the irony behind both the ZooTV and Pop tours.

But they did use technology well in those tours, so I guess I see what he means there...

The average Farker doesn't know where space is let alone that it is the place to be. Nor will they know that guy. They're too busy listening to some of the most incredibly nerdy music ever made. Like Hawkwind and Rush.

FSOL's Isness has been in regular rotation since the day it came out.

Not so crazy about later period FSoL although I don't bash it like some people did when it came out. It's just not my cup of tea. I'm not crazy about BoC either but I certainly own more than a few albums by them.

If there's stuff I get obsessed about, it's this (someone FINALLY put it up on YouTube, it's been out for like 6 damn years) and this.

Give 'em a second for the vocals kick in.

What you did there...I see it. Still, Fark is becoming obsessive about U2. Then again, I come in every thread to say exactly that, so I guess I'm a retard, too.

I understand, you're not a fan, but you can't deny that they are about as Sci-Fi as it gets, factoring in the live shows, etc.

Also, judging by your youtube links, we're just into different types of electronic music. You seem to be more into ambient compositions, my taste is simple, since Electronic is not my first love. I'm more of a House/DJ person. Neither is "better", just different.

No love for "Telstar" by the Tornados? Hell, besides being a great sci-fi song, it was also the inspiration for the greatest rock'n'roll song of all time, Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run"

Yes, level headed which probably means you'll find yourself flamed within an inch of your life. Just kidding. "Ambient compositions"...well, that's tough to say. Those are YouTube links and the sound quality is awful. Both of those tunes have a pretty decent amount of bass and rhythm. Try this and this and see what you think.

Wow. That's a lot like Basic Channel only tons better. I'll be on the hunt for that Intrusion album for sure.

Oh jesus, don't say that. I swear music nazis from Poland will come after you and kill you while you sleep. The Intrusion is a bit derivative of Basic Channel's Rhythm & Sound project. I love the record, but there are some nutty purists out there that hate it. Check out R&S and Intrusion, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Basic Channel is probably not for everyone, but there's a reason why they are absolutely revered in the music world, like Velvet Underground or Nick Drake.
