The only news is that it took as long as it did for anyone to point it out.

The kid may be smart, but he's no genius. Except when compared to the rest of Kansas.

If they really want to ensure that there aren't any spelling or grammar mistakes they should run those tests by the TF community before release.

Skail [TotalFark] 2009-02-15 11:30:40 AM
How is this even worth mentioning in a neighborhood's weekly flier?

The error he found was a spelling error. He noticed "slow nwes day" had some transposed letters.

Arkcon 2009-02-15 12:19:07 PM
Wait a minute -- "omission" of greenhouse gases vs. "emission" of greenhouse gases? Maybe, just maybe, people are feeding off the Freudian slip of the whole issue? Like we don't have enough, or we've omitted to work with the Kyoto protocols? Or we should? That must have been the angle that Fox and Friends was working, right? Or, like everyone said, real slow news day.

I'm impressed anybody in Kansas caught this, considering nobody there has yet caught the most obvious spelling mistake, whereby they spell "Evolution" as "Creationism"

Funny story about Kansas, at one point in my life I wanted to be a geologist (bad idea). My college class took a road trip across the Great Plains and down to the South West. We'd get out at road cuts and chip away at the rock to look for fossils. In Kansas the churchs would go out to the road cuts and spray them with black spray paint, thinking it would prevent us from proving evolution or some crap. We of course had rock hammers, and you always chip away the out layer anyways so it was a futile effort by the Xians.

This happens in Kansas and it goes to Fark's main page.

It's a feeble attempt by FAUX News to try to sound smart by shedding light on this grammar based story. The Grammar Nazis are always the ones with the lower IQ trying to prove that they are smart.

Was this error deliberately created by the Al-Qaeda-Obama conspiracy that may or may not exist? We'll have Ann Coulter to comment on that after these messages.

I'm not surprised there's a gross error on a test made by Kansas teachers -- Kansas has some of the worst teachers in the country, mostly because they pay teachers less (as a function of cost of living) than nearly any other state. Anyone with a brain in Kansas who wants to teach gets hired in another state where they pay teachers a living wage.

The only people willing to teach in Kansas are those too stupid to get hired anywhere else.

Indeed. I recall catching errors on tests in school (in fact I still do sometimes) but I almost never bother saying anything unless there's a compelling reason to do so. In the case of TFA, it was pretty clear "emission" was what was meant in the question by the context, so I would have continued the test, being mindful of the time limit. There have been times, though, when math or chem teachers will mis-write equations (making a number negative that should be positive, etc.), giving a crazy or improbable answer. THAT's when I ask the teacher if that's what they really meant.

He's playing the game, and doing it well. Yes, it's silly, but it'll be another thing that'll stand out when he enters the highly competitive college application market. Don't hate him because he's winning at a stupid game that he didn't design.
