If they're at all worried about his safety, and the safety of others, they should muster him over to the Navy and give him some coastal patrol boat.

Nope. It's like a driving test; if you fail it you are never allowed to take it again.

Some yes, some no. The article doesn't bother to mention...was this particular assessment a normal go/no-go excercise for others (like an aptitude type test that if you don't pass they just say fark you, you're too stupid) or do all recruits get multiple chances to pass this particular test?

Please, someone tell me how outraged I should be.

It does, however, show a lack of competence or preparation. If you have 100 guys taking a test (driving/flying/whatever), and 70 pass it the first time...would you consider the other 30 to be topnotch applicants?

Do you know who else had trouble flying, but received special treatment because of who his father was?

If you answered either John McCain or George Bush, a winner are you.

I hear there's a slot open in the Texas Air National Guard for him.

kermit_the_frog 2009-02-15 02:38:15 PM
He failed a written test -- one of the early ones in training.

Probably asking multiple choice questions like: what is Vx? What is Vy? And specifically what are the values for these on the aircraft you are flying/learning?

Super easy stuff in all likelihood. As another poster points out, failing an early written test is indicative of laziness and/or stupidity -- especially if this is something he wants -- he needs to learn that he has to work for things -- they won't just be handed to him when it comes to aviation.

/Vx == Airspeed for best angle of climb
//Vy == Airspeed for best rate of climb
///Why yes, I *am* a pilot :-)
////slashies FTW :-)

Flying fighters, being one of the hardest jobs in the military, is beyond most peoples' capabilities. Most people don't even try.

Like a current senator and a former VP we could name.

Depends on the applicant pool. Hypothetically, would you call someone who washed out of BUDS training incompetent or unprepared?

(hint: You shouldn't)

I guess this latest batch of royals shows the dangers of inbreeding.

Fear_and_Loathing [TotalFark] 2009-02-15 02:48:59 PM
It would appear he failed a written test, not anything in the air. Ground school is one thing and what you do in the air is another. However; if you don't pass one, you don't get to do the other. Well' the next stage.

I saw plenty of people do that in flight school. It's only a big deal because he is a Royal.

They don't even let most people try. It's not like you can walk-on and just claim your right to fly. Unless Daddy's an Admiral, or a Senator. And then, when you're in the program, you don't have to follow the same rules as everybody else. Get drunk, crash planes, go AWOL, pound rails of coke - the world is your oyster!

A day in the life of the Landed Class.

FTA:His dream is to fly an Apache attack helicopter on the front line.

But if he passes his pilot's course he may get a reconnaissance Lynx or Gazelle chopper instead, depending on his flying skills.

Bullshiat. He'll get whatever he wants to fly, cause he's prince.

Also, watch the video on that page. Pure comedy gold.

Rocket Balls 2009-02-15 03:03:22 PM
Actually, I imagine it IS good to be the prince. I do enjoy all the spiteful inbreeding-royal-are-useless comments though. Reminds me that losers always hate their betters.

JammerJim 2009-02-15 03:12:41 PM
Kid may, I say may, be a doofus, but give the Brits credit for making them serve. I'm sure they get less KP than the average troop, but it can't be all peaches, even for a royal. THAT scandal would be pretty huge, I reckon.

Karma Chameleon 2009-02-15 03:29:35 PM
That's okay, John McCain proved you can be a miserable failure at your piloting job and still have a relatively successful career - as long as you've got connections. Which I'm sure the prince does.

bicentennialman 2009-02-15 03:42:18 PM
Here in the States, it depends on what phase you are in on what happens if you fail.

Usually you get pushed back to the following class, and retake. Or you get some "Extra Instruction" EI.

/never failed
//in Primary.

Regarding the Paki bit:

Anyone who's done teamwork or coordinated tasks, especially ones that require efficiency, with lots of people they've never met before knows that nicknames get assigned quickly and generally stick. The guy being called "Paki" isn't likely being called that in a derogatory manner. If I had to guess, I'd say it's a nickname assigned because he's the only Paki looking guy in the entire squad.

Phoenix_M Um, they look nothing alike. Look at pics of Charles as a young man: besides hair color (and let's not forget that Di was blonde), Harry really takes after him. At least IMO.
