Subby here, just trying to save 300 comments about my math. I know the numbers posted in the article do not work out to 1900%, but since it says "about $2.60", I took poetic license because 1900% sounded cool.

That's over $10 for a pony keg!
Insanity.

Ridiculously increased sin taxes? Welcome to the Alabama school of thought, Oregon.

What's wrong - not enough people buying hard liquor from their government stores?

Whoever votes for this should DIAF.

They're targeting the wrong demographic (in general). People don't typically get hammered on Rogue Shakespeare Stout, for example, and drive erratically home to beat their wives.

Therefore, they should levy the taxes on NASCAR beers.

It sounds scary, but $0.20/pint isn't that a big a deal considering you have no sales tax.

Yes, there is nothing quite so useful in an economic downturn as massive tax increases.

/Yeah, I know people don't have to buy beer, but then you end up with unemployed beer manufacturers - a travesty!

Not sure how they could get away with legally differentiating between the upscale beers and the mass produced beers. There might be a way, but then Coors, Miller, Bud, etc prolly have a metric-shiat-ton more lawyers than the lesser known brands and would get the legal difference thrown out the window.

Besides, I like Miller Lite too.

/down with ALL sin-taxes!
//Still can't buy beer on Sundays here either.

As a student of Economics.

As a drinker of beer, wine and spirits.

I would support this in my state.

Alcohol leads to societal costs, think car accidents, beaten wives, this means more cops.

Raise the tax to cover the cost.

/I love me my IPA

FIFY.

Alcohol doesn't lead to anything (except maybe a coyote fark every once in a while). It's the idiots that are irresponsible with alcohol that are the problem. Hence, do not punish the responsible. Cut straight to the chase and tax all idiots.

/not sure how that would pass congress tho.

How else are you going to measure beer? In milliliters? Centiliters? The day I stop measuring my beer in pints is the day I stop drinking beer. Get out of here you commie scum.

As a former long-time resident of Oregon, I can tell you that this is probably the single best way to incite open revolution among the fine drunken and overly caffeinated people of Oregon.

You guys should have another Boston Tea Party.

Except in Portland, not Boston. And with beer instead of tea. And you should drink it instead of throwing it in the harbour.

Fight the power! *hic*

Nobody buys a pint of beer at anything close to cost.

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would raise taxes on beer. The current excise tax is about $2.60 and the new bill would raise it to $49.61 for a barrel of beer...

Outstanding! Soon (after all the people with anything to tax leave for other states) California will become a windswept desert populated by starving zombies consisting of illegal aliens, clueless movie stars, and brain dead politicians.

Oregon now has a good start on doing the same.

My plan is working. Soon, only Washington will need to be "restructured" free of intelligent life. And I'm really not too sure that much work is necessary there.

And then the entire west coast will return to virgin wilderness.

We should bring back Prohibition. Totally ban alcohol, just as we have totally banned pot and hard drugs.

Oh, cigarettes and cigars, too.

And chewing tobacco.

And foods that are bad for you.

Total regimentation, yeah, that's the ticket.

12.fl.oz.: Why don't they just get it over with and outlaw everything you can consume except fresh vegetables out of your own garden.

Those need to be taxed, citizen!

Well, that's the idea. Virgin wilderness, populated by zombies.

Great hunting territory.

What are you crazy??? Do you know how much revenue that would be? Government needs all those horrible things badly so they can get money from one group of people and give it to another and look like they care.

I suspect the dirty little fingers of MADD to be involved with this somehow.

Cincinnati Kid 2009-02-15 10:02:38 AM
Let's say you went out three times a week drinking. You had 10 pints each time. (You're an alcoholic hardcore!) That's $2 per night out, and $6 per week. While I'm not an advocate of a bunch of new taxes, 1900% makes it sound like beer will become out of the the price range of the average person.

Money generated would create the Alcohol Impact Remediation fund, which would distribute funds to various agencies that address treatment and recovery programs for about five seconds, before being shifted to some politician's pet project.

/I don't mind taxes to cover the social costs of alcohol, but I think $25 per keg is just a wee bit over-inflated.
//The State of Jefferson is looking better and better.

Oregonians are damn proud of their hand-crafted, brewed-in-small-batches specialty beers. Oregonians are THE biggest beer snobs in the USA, and rightfully so. If you order a Budweiser in an Oregon bar, everyone looks at you like a cross between some alien that just landed and a heathen.

20 years ago, when they decided to toss out a Portland mayor they hated, who did they vote in? A bartender. That's Oregon.

With that in mind, this idea is going to go down in Oregon like the ideas of "pump your own gas" and "sales tax" - ain't gonna happen.
