Pepsi: Yet another victim of the Grocery Shrink Ray

/It's a horribly designed site, but it gets the point across.
//I've been keeping an eye out for this phenomenon. I first noticed when I bought Tropicana orange juice. They used to have a 96oz. jug, but now you can only find 89oz. sizes. And it's the same price as the 96oz. one used to be.

Cheez-Its boxes are getting scandalously smaller as well! And don't get me started on the 8oz. yogurt cups. For shame Dannon, for shame.

/Americans however seem to have adjusted to this trend so as to maintain their girth

Just do what I'm doing, switching to water. It's cheaper and you don't get all the empty calories which means you have a chance of not being a fat ass.

Eh? Haven't bought a soda recently? It's gone up about 10 cents each year for the past few years.

Maybe they should just take a page out of the chip companies' books and only fill the cans halfway. Maybe nobody will notice that either.

My dad used to drink a couple Pepsis a day. Then he found out he has type 2 diabetes several months ago and hasn't had one since. It's amazing how much of a change can come by just not drinking soda.

The bag needs to be firm, but there's no reason that it has to be half empty space. It's a trap.

Yeah, not really. It's called Inflation.

A 2-liter bottle of soda would be about 69 cents or something in the 90s. Now the price is approaching $2. Not really the same price there, slick

Pepsi Corporate (FIFM) double talk:

...adjustments to our pricing and packaging. Rather than simply raise prices,...

It is still raising prices, just not "simply". Apparently a price per ounce increase is one that consumers can't see.

/ if I had a vote I'd say +1 for the headline

M-G 2009-02-15 11:32:44 AM
Don't know if the price has changed or not, but my most recent package of Dial soap had bars that are much more 'sculpted.' They do fit nicely in the hand, and I'm sure that's the reason they'd give for the new shape....right.

TheOther [TotalFark] 2009-02-15 11:33:01 AM
This is the follow-on of gas more than doubling in price last year.

Two choices:
raise the price on the old, larger package
OR
keep the same price on the new, smaller package.

So the question is: do you want to eat a cup of that crappy Dannon yogurt or do you want to eat 8oz of that crappy Dannon yogurt? How do you measure your meal?

Either way, you, the consumer, are going to pay more per ounce/lb. (Store brands are doing the same thing, so switching to the cheaper brand isn't really a value-saver, you just end up with even crappier yogurt. )

Ratbert42: I've never seen a skinny person drinking a Diet Pepsi.

I've been drinking diet soda since I was 15 (remember Tab?) and I still put quite a bit of it away. Not like I used though--a liter or so a day. I'm not fat, never have been.

Not diet Pepsi, though. It sucks.

I'm pretty sure that diet soda drinkers, on average, are also heavier than non-soda drinkers. That's not to say that diet soda makes you heavy, but a correlation is there. It's probably a lifestyle trend.

So true. I used to pay a nickel for a bottle. Back then, the bottles were made out of glass and the nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. "Give me a bottle for a bee," we used to say.

Was reading an article (maybe from Fark?) not long ago about how a number of companies were subtly changing their packaging to give the customers less while charging the same price. One of the big peanut butter companies made that indent on the bottom of the jar larger - so the jar looks to be the same size on the shelf, but the volume it holds is actually a couple of ounces less. But who would actually notice that?

i wouldn't doubt that. the only reason i drink diet and not regular has nothing to do w/ my weight. my dad was heavier and so he only bought diet when i was young...and now i can't stomach the regular stuff (too sweet)

I actually find the diet to be sweeter, but they taste so similar to me that I couldn't possibly justify the extra sugar.

Getting less salmonella for the same prices: is that a something they should advertise or conceal?

When the labels change to say 'NOW 30% LESS SUGAR!' because there is 30% less product, that's just corporate snark on the consumer.

So all Coke has to do is keep their 12 packs priced like they were a year ago and they'll slowly garner a gigantic market share. Anything they lose in per-unit profit will be more than covered in volume.

Brilliant.

That's like saying "if you're skinny, why would you need exercise?" Believe it or not soda consumption can have a marked effect on your health.

What really annoys me about this (besides my intelligence being insulted) is that it causes an increase in the per capita weight of packaging. Now not only are prices going up for a supposedly good reason (the economy), but they are also going up for a ridiculous reason: having to pay for more cardboard weight and empty space on the back of a truck and more man hours as stock boys have to put 1/3 more cases on the shelves.

Metaluna Mutant: Repeal the tariffs and fees on imported sugar and watch all the colas stabilize in price when they drop that HFCS shiat go back to real sugar.

Then watch ten thousand workers at American food processing plants line up outside your house with coffee cups in their hands so we can all pay three cents less for a can of pop.

Actually, on second thought, do you really think Coke and Pepsi would lower their prices? Wouldn't they be much more likely to just raise their profit margins now that we've acclimated to paying a certain amount?

Nice find! Yeah, it might have something to do with people who drink lots of artificially-sweetened beverages consuming more processed food overall. I'd rather drink tap water than diet soda, and since quitting daily consumption of soft drinks, find that I can't drink more than a few ounces of those anymore, either. I feel lucky that I didn't have to transfer a sugared-soda habit to a diet soda one, but was able to quit. Then again, I never developed a smoking habit, though I was a bit of a social smoker in college. I'm not virtuous; I'm just lucky.

I've read that light-to-moderate drinkers tend to be thinner than either teetotalers or heavy drinkers. (Link) Maybe it has something to do with moderation with one taste carrying over to moderation in others. If you enjoy drinking, but can have a glass of wine or bottle of beer and leave it at that, maybe you're more able to enjoy a slice of pizza, but not go for seconds or thirds. Maybe it does have something to do with a small amount of alcohol consumed on a regular basis, or perhaps differences in food preferences - when I drink wine with dinner at home, it's because I'm cooking from scratch. When I'm in a hurry (and therefore not drinking wine), I just grab something so I won't be hungry.

Anyone seen anything else about that?
