I spent most of yesterday working on one. We had to retire the last one after almost 10 years of service. We'll be set up with a wood stove, fish finder, underwater camera, and radio. Not quite penthouse, but close.

Underwater camera? In an ice house? Is that safe?

Not sure if snark or true, but yeah.

60' of cable. We hook it up to an old VCR run off of a power inverter. It's pretty cool to watch the big old lake trout actually grab your line. It also taught me a thing or two about bait presentation.

LaChanz: fish finder

I don't get the point of the fish finder. Does your ice shack move around?

It's a sonar device that lets you know if the fish are moving around under the shack. Especially for smelts. It's better served during the summer in a boat, but is helpful under the ice given it's limited cone shaped range.

I'm glad to have a rare ice fishing thread on Fark and wish I could stay and participate, but I'm heading out right now to put ours out. Maybe I'll be back later with pics.

/Maybe I'll be too drunk.

I have an ice fishing simulator. It's an upside down 5 gal pail in my garage. I go out there and sit around and drink a sixer of cheap beer. It's quite realistic.

Sometimes ice fishing isn't about catching fish.

I've never Ice fished before but I know a few people who do and they have convinced me that it really isn't about catching fish as much as it is about getting drunk in a shack.

That article is too long. Way too long.

I'm kind of upset that when I moved, my new garage did not have a central drain (with a little removable PVC hole-y thingy), simulation really suffered without it.

...then there was last weeks wind storm. I lost my 5gal IFS.

But...true diehards find a way. So I'm making due with a large chunk of firewood and a frisbee...

The fish finder is so you know when to put down your beer.

Why do you have to go fishing for ice anyway? Can't you get ice at a grocery store much cheaper?

Vanilla Ice and Queen with David Bowie in an ice shack?

I don't think so.

Sometimes my ice shanty drinking adventures are interrupted by an inconsiderate fish tugging at the line.

Not a problem though, I just pull 'em up and lay them down on the ice. They flop around for a little bit but then they seem to relax and go to their happy place.

This may be a dumb question but, what do you do with your ice shack in the summer? Do you haul back to the garage for the warm months? Do they even have warm months above Kentucky?

Another dumb Southerner

Not all icefishermen are gay ... just that breakaway group - the Lake Erie 134.

Ah, ice fishermen. Fond memories of springtime in Oscoda, MI. EVERY year to see who would be the procrastinating bastard to leave his shanty out there one week too long.

How farking bored was the first guy who decided to go outside, in the dead of winter, to go fishing. His wife must have been a winner!

God put ice over the lakes to give the fish a break from us. Stop upsetting the balance.

/Eskimos are exempt from this rant

I read that as "ice shark".

Was sorely disappointed.

CornbreadOracle: This may be a dumb question but, what do you do with your ice shack in the summer?

My brother-in-law has a barn he keeps it in.

There it is. Still have some fine tuning to do. Come spring we'll paint it on the outside and poly the inside. And no, we didn't catch any fish today. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

As a southern fiserman Ice Shacks have always fascinated me. I've found most male activities are centered around things that are so unpleasent that the wife won't tag along. Seems like a hell of a good time.

Should you have a wood burning stove in a wooden shack? Just asking.

Why does everyone seem to think ice fishing is a guy sport? My husband hates going out on the ice while I love ice fishing.

No ice shanty, though would like to set up tent sometime just to see what all the fuss is about. It's always been just my fishing gear, myself in a triple or more bundle of snow clothes, lunch, fresh water (no fish pee water, thank you very much,) and a small...or not....bottle of the good stuff.

Used to go out on the ice with my dad. Loved sitting there, saying nothing, just being together, side-by-side, listening to and watching the world. God I miss him.

I don't why, but that made me laugh hysterically.

The wife hollered from the bedroom... "Are you okay?"

GeorgeBurns 2009-02-15 08:23:31 PM
Made me laugh too. Then I read justmekt's post...now I have something in my eye....

With good company and bearable weather, ice-fishing is a blast. In that regard, it's really no different than regular fishing.

Man, that brought back memories of everyone I've ever loved that has passed away.

That was beautiful.

I think you only need to read as far as the first paragraph to find your answer.

Damnit. My brain went two ways at once with that headline. Started adapting Love Shack lyrics to the tune of Ice Ice Baby.
